Every visit to Ireland brings a new-to-us discovery. We have our favorite haunts and things, like the Saturday farmers market  and piles of late night garlic and cheese chips at Supermac’s, but we do our best to try at least one new restaurant.

On this visit, we drove along the coast to the village of Barna to wander along Barna Pier and to check out a renowned restaurant, O’Grady’s at the end of the pier.

The below sign alerts drivers to the fact that the road is ending. Point taken.

The views from Barna are gorgeous, and the ever-changing weather makes them even more spectacular. When we arrived it was bright and sunny, but during the course of our meal all of that changed into lashing rain, clouds, and wind.

Luckily, there’s no place better than a cozy seafood restaurant in the West of Ireland to wait out the storm with a pint of Guinness.

Irish prawn salads are one of my favorites, so I decided to go with that, served with fresh brown bread and Irish butter, for my lunch. I love the tangy Marie Rose sauce on the top, and the prawns were amazing, more like lobster than prawns, really. The portion was heaping and had a good amount of salad greens, onions, and tomatoes underneath. I could definitely eat this for lunch daily.

As the weather got worse, we talked over the crackle of a roaring fire and stared out at the boats and windsurfer braving the chilly downpour.

We continued our wait with a couple of strong, sweet, and creamy Irish coffees. When in Ireland. . .

As the saying goes, Ireland experiences four seasons in a day, and by the time we were paying for our leisurely lunch, the sun was out, and getting ready to set. The one big downside of visiting Ireland in the winter is how early the darkness sets in and how late the sun comes up. There were days I woke up at eight, and it was pitch dark out. Barna Pier

The upside of all of that rain? Rainbows, double and triple rainbows that make me squeal with delight every single time. Like so many other things in Ireland, rainbows just add a little more magic.

Our afternoon spent at O’Grady’s was one of our favorites of our entire trip. The restaurant has won many awards for its fresh, creative cuisine, and they are well-deserved. The service was warm and welcoming; we never felt rushed and really enjoyed being on holiday there. If you find yourself in Ireland, definitely spend a few days in Galway and make Barna Pier a stop along your journey.

Galway Love

If I could choose a place to live besides Boston, it would be a very tough choice between Healdsburg, California and Galway, Ireland.  I spent a semester and part of a summer in college in Galway, and I fell in love with just about everything in the city and surrounding country. After I returned to the US for senior year of college, I set things in motion to move back to Galway for at least six months with a work visa and to see what would happen from there. In March of that year, my father died, and I ended up skipping the travel, moving to Boston instead. As luck would have it, about a year later I met my favorite Galwegian, my husband, and I have been lucky to call this place home a couple of weeks every year since.

There’s something in the air, in addition to the mist and rain here, the smell of turf fires, and usually the sounds of an accordion, flute, or some other instrument playing. Galway is colorful in its storefronts and homes, these bright pops of color and lovely little details make just a simple walk down the street an experience.

Galway is an old city, founded in the 12th century, and its history shows up all over, in bits of the old city walls and arches, cemeteries, and churches

A fast river, the Corrib, flows through the town and into Galway Bay, which offers spectacular sunsets. When I studied abroad I loved running along the river and out to the sea, and in past years even on vacation, I have done some marathon training here.

The Galway Saturday market is one of my favorite things about the town. I lived right across the street from the market when I was a student. Every Saturday morning we were woken by the sounds of farmers setting up their stalls with produce brought in from the country. One of my all time favorite vendors is a Hare Krishna named Govinda, who makes incredible vegetarian food. Govinda was gone for a few years, so when I saw his bright yellow stall this time around, I literally jumped for joy.

The recent addition of a Continental Christmas Market makes the city even more special at the end of November and throughout December.

Even though the weather can be atrocious, getting out and about in Galway is just something you want to do, and the Salthill promenade is the perfect place for a walk with a view.

Galway is a city full of restaurants and pubs, gourmet shops, and wine bars, making it the ideal place for food and wine lovers.

Galway has a ton of character, and people flock here from all over the world, making it a fun place to go out and to get chatting to perfect strangers who become new friends. There’s a warmth and character about the city that just needs to be experienced to be understood. It’s why we always recommend that anyone visiting Ireland spend at least a few days in Galway, using it as a jumping off point for visiting Connemara, the Burren, and even Westport.

I guess you can tell that I love it here; if the economy wasn’t so desperate and jobs almost impossible to find,  our many talks of moving back for a few years would likely become a reality. Until then, I hold this special place in my heart year-round until I get to visit again.

Have you thought about moving to a new city/country?

With the arrival of August comes travel planning for Thanksgiving for us. Since there are typically 2-3 vacation days off from the grind, we try to build a longer trip around the holiday. Like we did last year, right now we are planning on spending Thanksgiving in Ireland, hopefully with a trip to Italy to visit family. Now we just need some decent airfares.

My favorite way to spend a day in Galway City starts with a visit to the Spirit One Spa at the Radisson in Galway. With a whole complex of relaxation rooms like a sauna, a Turkish bath, a heated beach, and an aromatherapy steam room, you literally can spend a whole day there.  A half day pass also gets you access to the outdoor hot tub, which overlooks the salt lake and bay.

Just imagine a steamy soak with chilly air and this view.

The massage therapy and soaking tub treatments are heaven, and many of the packages follow it up with tea or lunch.

My second stop o the afternoon is always Sheridan’s Wine Bar, across the street from my old Galway apartment.

Sheridan’s Wine Bar is right above the Sheridan’s Cheesemonger; as a result they always have some delicious cheeses, olives, and other delights on hand. Sheridan’s is always cozy and bright, a warm retreat from the often-rainy Galway weather.

Galway Ireland

I have enjoyed many luxurious and relaxing afternoons at the Spirit One Spa and Sheridan’s Wine Bar. In fact, it’s these afternoons where I can say I am truly relaxed which is a rare occasion.

People often ask me for things to do in Ireland, and although this afternoon is not one that is touristy or traditional, I highly recommend it on a trip to Galway!
