I can’t believe that two years have passed since I made my first visit to The Urban Grape, the then-brand-new wine store in Chestnut Hill. Fast forward two years, and store owners TJ and Hadley are not only celebrating the store’s anniversary, but they are full speed ahead planning the Urban Grape South End. They’ve done an amazing job of creating not just a store that houses great wine, beer, and spirits, but a place where people want to hang out. Their events are always a blast, and when I found out they were having an anniversary party at the Hotel Indigo in Newton, I was literally the first person to RSVP.

I made it back from the Cape with about an hour to spare before the party, went home, got ready, and was on-the-go again, ready for a pool party on a perfect early June evening.

The Hotel Indigo restaurant, Bokx 109 features the Bokx pool, a fabulous outdoor party space more reminiscent of Miami than Newton! It’s definitely a hidden gem. Hotel Indigo

The Urban Grape stocked the party with tasting tables from their favorite distributors and producers who poured at tables surrounding the pool area. For a complete list of wines, beers, and spirits poured, you can visit the Urban Grape blog.

As guests arrived, we were handed Scharffenberger sparkling wine to kick off the festivities. I’ve been a fan ever since our visit to Scharffenberger this spring.

Other tasting tables included Slane Castle whiskey, a favorite of ours.

And a few tables featuring wines from different distributors. Standouts for me included the Gosset Champagne and Grgich Hills Fume Blanc.

Bully Boy

Local favorites, the guys from Bully Boy distillers were there pouring a delicious, summery drink with their white rum. Love their spirits and the labels!

We also tasted our first (but definitely not our last) High & Mighty beer. We loved the super fresh and refreshing Beer of the Gods, but I think my favorite was the Fumata Bianca, a smoky beer with a hint of bacon flavor. The High & Mighty table also happened to be one of the most fun; it certainly drew a crowd!

It was so fun to get together with other bloggers, to run into old friends, and to celebrate the success of a couple who has worked really hard to build a creative, fun store that has brought so many people together. The Urban Grape is definitely doing local business right, and I can.not.wait until the South End location opens. We might move in. Winking smile

Monday morning seems to come even more quickly when you have been out late on a Sunday. Thanks to some cold medicine, I spent Saturday completely out-of-it while my dear husband tackled our taxes. When you have worked for about 12 businesses throughout the year, it turns out to be quite the task. Luckily the taxes are about 90% done and my cold/flu, after about nine days, seems to be giving up on me.

Sunday we had a successful trip to Wrentham Village to do some clothes shopping. Since I work from home, I almost never buy clothes, and with more and more meetings outside my house, I needed a few things. It was insanely crowded, and I hate clothes shopping, so I was happy to be done.

The highlight of the weekend was definitely the very end; a Sunday night cocktail class at The Urban Grape.

The class was taught by Boston’s best-known mixologist, Jackson Cannon from Eastern Standard and now The Hawthorne, along with his Hawthorne partner, Nicole Lebedevitch.

Throughout the evening, we learned how to make a classic rum punch, a French 75, and a Vieux Carre, and of course got to sample all three. I also ate about a dozen deviled eggs from The Hawthorne; they are topped with pickle and bacon. Need I say more?

The Urban Grape Sunday night events are a fantastic deal and a great way to spend a Sunday night, even if they leave you exhausted the next day. While I caffeinate and kick off a very hectic week, I leave you with some cocktail class images.

How was your weekend? Are your taxes done, or do you wait until the last minute?

A bitterly cold Sunday night of a long weekend made for the perfect setting for a whiskey/whisky tasting at The Urban Grape in Chestnut Hill this past weekend. While most wine stores close up shop at 6:00 on Sundays, The Urban Grape sometimes closes and then reopens to host special pop up events, complete with great food and drinks and a nice bit of education on the beverage of the day. Normally I am too lazy to go out on a Sunday night, but, long weekend or not, I find it a great way to help stave off the Monday blues until Monday actually arrives.

Whisk(e)y A Go-Go featured whiskey expert Matt Chivian talking about nine different whiskeys that hailed from the US, Ireland, or Scotland. Food pairings were made by The Gallows, and they were not just great with the whiskey, but they were winter comfort food at its finest.

Here’s the lineup:

American Whiskey by Michter’s American Whiskey Co.

“Unblended” American Whiskey (Kentucky) paired with Apple and Cured Ham Mince Meat Pie

“Small Batch” Bourbon Whiskey (Kentucky) paired with Pulled Pork Sliders

Irish Whiskey bottled by Cooley Distillery

Slane Castle “Premium Blended” Whiskey (Ireland), paired with GreatHill Blue Cheese, Honey, Citrus on Brioche

South End Gallows

Single Malt Scotch Whiskey Bottled by Gordon & MacPhail

Benromach Distillery 10 year (Speyside)

Ledaig Distillery 16 year (Isle of Mill)

Pulteny Distillery “Old Pulteny” 21 year (Highland)

          Glenrothes Distillery 30 year (Speyside)

The above were paired with The Gallows’ Scotch and Barley Soup with Oxtail, while the below was a slightly sweet, slightly gingery dessert all on its own.

As you can see, the tasting lineup was pretty spectacular, and it featured some really tasty, well-balanced choices. My personal favorites were the Slane Castle Whiskey, which is smooth and light, perfect for blending in cocktails as a rum substitute, the Benromach 10 year because of the earthy turf undertones that reminded me of a rainy Irish day, a hot whiskey, and a fireplace, and the Glenrothes Distillery 30 year because of it’s toasty, slightly sweet notes and lovely smoothness.

It was a great way to spend a Sunday evening with friends; I even got to catch up with blogger buddies from Beantown Eats! The Urban Grape does a fantastic job with every detail of their events, from choosing great businesses to partner with for delicious food pairings, to important details like offering a coat rack for guests. The tickets for the whiskey pop up event were $15 each which, considering how much whiskey and food was available, is pretty amazing. Their events sell out fast, so keep an eye out!

Are you a whiskey/whisky fan? If not, what other spirits do you like for wintry cocktails?

Speaking of cocktails, I am finally checking out The Hawthorne tonight. Any suggestions on what to order?
