Dorchester’s dining scene just keeps on getting better. We’ve long loved places like Ashmont Grill, dbar, and The Ledge, and Savin Bar + Kitchen has been a more-than-welcome addition to our neighborhood. Not too long ago, through friends, we discovered another new favorite, Van Shabu, a hot pot and sushi bar located on Dorchester Avenue. After a lovely day of boating with Michelle and her fiancé on Saturday, we worked up quite the appetite and decided to head to Van Shabu for dinner.

We decided to share a few starters, including a healthy favorite, seaweed salad.

I was feeling dehydrated and opted for iced green tea instead of alcohol, but I stole a sip of my husband’s Sapporo.

We also grazed on edamame and the Thai spiced wings. The dipping sauce was seriously addictive.

And then the sushi arrived. Van Shabu has the usual sushi offerings, but they also have a pretty extensive menu of creative options.

We chowed down on a bunch of different rolls. I discovered at Haru that I love fruit and fish sushi, and I love that Van Shabu has a variety of fruity options.

Our sushi choices included the New California (fresh crab meat, avocado, cucumber, tempura flake & tobiko), Volcano (new california roll topped w/ spicy baked scallop), the Celtics (spicy white tuna, cucumber & avocado topped w/ wasabi tobiko), and one of the specials of the day, pictured below. I really loved the spicy baked scallop atop the Volcano roll. I could have dined on that alone!

Sushi is one of my perfect summer foods. It’s filling enough to get rid of those hunger pangs, but it also feels so light and fresh. Van Shabu also happens to be one of the few places that deliver to our house, so we are very happy. I will look forward to trying their hot pot options when it gets a little bit cooler out.

Random weeknight get-togethers are the best. My friend Raija was in town yesterday for a work conference, and when I was able to get away to meet her for drinks, I was very excited. She doesn’t live far, but life gets busy, and we don’t see each other nearly as often as we would like.

We met under gorgeous blue skies outside South Station, and while talking about my ridiculous week last week, made our way past the Intercontinental Hotel, our destination. It took us a few blocks to realize that our chatter had distracted us, and we had to turn around to head back to the hotel.

Rumba

We found seats in RumBa, as close to the windows as we could get, to enjoy the channel views. It definitely turned out to be a beautiful day in the city. I started with a Rum Swizzle, and after awhile we ordered a dozen East Coast oysters.

Oysters just seemed to spark our appetites, and soon after my husband arrived, we moved on across the corridor to Sushi Teq.

Sushi Teq

Sushi Teq is a trippy dining experience, with ever-changing lights surrounding diners. It’s a little too much, but the views, sushi, and cocktails help to make up for it.

I had a tart Hemingway Daiquiri that was absolutely delicious.

And we shared a bunch of rolls, here the Sushi Teq roll:

And a Philadelphia roll, spicy tuna roll, and spicy salmon roll. Everything was fresh and delicious, and they delivered on spicy!

Nights like last night remind me that I need to get out of my workspace more during the week. I instantly felt more energetic just being out and about. As much as working from home has its perks, it can also make you a little stir-crazy!

It was also SO great to spend time talking non-stop with a good friend. I can’t wait for more fun in our post-marathon celebrations.

What’s the most fun night/day out you’ve had recently?

Lunch is easily one of my favorite meals of the day (along with brunch), especially when I have the time to make it a leisurely lunch with friends. A few weeks ago, I had a meeting downtown, and beforehand I caught up with Elina over lunch at Haru.

I arrived a few minutes early, and I was able to catch a couple of shots of the empty dining room. It was just noon, and the restaurant didn’t fill up until a bit later.

I loved the serene feel of Haru along with all of the natural light. Even on a blustery day, the streaming light made me feel warm and cozy.

Elina had been to Haru before, so she had some ideas on what to order. I am a lover of all things sushi (except for the word “eel”. . . love the stuff, hate the word), so I was game to try anything.

We decided to share the Strawberry Finn roll and the Kiss of Fire roll.

Obviously, I loved the Kiss of Fire roll, which was filled with spicy tuna and topped with salmon or white tuna and a nice piece of jalapeno. Add a little wasabi, and it makes my spice-loving palate happy.

I was super curious to try the Strawberry Finn roll; fruit on sushi? I had never had it!

It turned out to be really delicious, a slight bit of sweet mixed in with the spicy fish and accented perfectly by lots of pickled ginger. Pickled ginger is one of those things that I can eat by the bowl-full. I just love it.

Haru offers a ton of different menu items, and from what I tasted, their food is creative, fresh, and beautifully presented. It’s a little pricier than our typical sushi takeout, but it is quite a bit better, in addition to offering many more choices and a really lovely dining space. I could easily eat sushi daily, and Haru will definitely be seeing me again.
