After SHED, we headed to the Williamson Wines tasting room on the Healdsburg Plaza. We had tasted here before, but I was excited to sit down and taste wine with our fun group. I always love tasting wine with new people; it’s fun to discuss what we get from the wines as well as likes and dislikes.

What I love most about the Williamson tasting room is that they have a food and wine pairing experience. Each wine is paired with a little bite, which you are meant to try alone and again with the wine to see how the flavors are brought out in each. It’s really fun, like a little food and wine pairing light bulb goes off with each taste.

In total, we did six food and wine pairings at Williamson, and while I loved them all and could write about them all, I’ll share the highlights to hopefully keep your interest. Smile  Maybe I should start doing wine tasting “outtakes” to include those I loved but didn’t feature? Blog writing for days!

A few Williamson Wines pairing favorites:

Chantilly Chardonnay with a Mango Stilton Cheese – the gentle butterscotch notes and lemon meringue-y notes in the wine were great on their own. The fruit in the cheese brought out more fruit notes in the wine, and as with all the cheeses, a little saltiness made for a memorable (in a good way) contrast.

Enchant Trinity GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) – The wine is fruit and spice and luxurious texture, a fireplace wine for sure. It was paired with pure heaven: Dubliner Irish Cheddar, Balsamic Garlic Jam, and Truffle Salt. How good does that sound?! The spices in the wine and the earthiness of the little snack were perfection. This wine is recommended for big dishes like pot roast and short ribs, which I plan on mastering this winter.

Seduce Cabernet Sauvignon – This Dry Creek Valley Cab is fruitier than its Napa Valley counterpart and lacks those sometimes over-the-top mouth-drying tannins. The pairing was a piece of Dubliner topped with blue cheese, pecan, and honey. Since the wine had such nice fruit, the nuttiness and saltiness of the blue cheese was a tasty contrast, and the honey brought out the natural juiciness of the fruit. Yum.

We didn’t want to leave Williamson; it’s a great, comfortable tasting room on Healdsburg Plaza, well worth a visit. It turned out to be a good thing that we moved on though, as our next stop may be my new favorite Healdsburg restaurant.

 

Bravas Healdsburg

Bravas Bar de Tapas is so much fun. They have a gorgeous outdoor seating area and bar and space for making huge pans of paella. We kicked our time at Bravas off with their white sangria; it was well into the 90’s, and this drink was pure refreshment. I loved the little hint of bitter from the grapefruit!

At Bravas things got even more festive! We shared plates of Cider Braised Chorizo and Padron Peppers, a Watermelon and Tomato Salad, and a Tostada with Onions, Raisins, Goat Cheese, and Balsamic, which is basically the best thing ever. Crunchy, salty, creamy, sweet, this tapa had us all swooning. Everything was so delicious, and the California sun did not hurt! I can already tell each Healdsburg visit will include time at Bravas.

Our final stop was Moustache Baked Goods for our choice of a sweet treat to end the food tour. We were all stuffed from the goodness we got to try throughout the afternoon, and I think every last one of us got dessert to go.

I decided to go with the Dry Creek Peach because I love the Dry Creek Valley, and the peaches were in season and perfection. The cupcake was pretty amazing and left me wishing we had left with a box. This is another place I will visit again.

I love how this food tour opened our eyes to so many Healdsburg businesses we hadn’t met before. Savor Healdsburg Food Tours offers a couple of different options, and I will be taking the other tour on our next trip.

Summer is my favorite time of year. I don’t love or even like the other seasons nearly as much; I find early sunsets deplorable, and chilly weather makes my bones hurt. I am happiest when I can have bare legs and bare feet (or open toed shoes for work) and can sleep without blankets. I love being hot, I love beating sun, and most of all I love boats, beaches, fresh produce, and long days. This summer wasn’t the best, as far as heat went, but we still managed to have some pretty great times.

Some favorite moments included our anniversary dinner at Hamersley’s, our Red Fire Farm CSA and all the tomatoes, a concert at Westport Rivers, James Taylor at Tanglewood,  swimming at the Jersey shore, and my family’s visit, especially whale watching from Boston.

We visited Venezia on a friend’s boat and spent a ton of time at our friends’ new pool, sipping cocktails and swimming, It was the life.

We also made some time for Chatham, one of my favorite places on Cape Cod. It was a chilly August day, but we still enjoyed the views from Chatham Bars Inn and celebrated their 10th anniversary with commemorative cocktails.

We also spent some time on one of my favorite Cape Cod Beaches, Craigville Beach, where I spent childhood vacations and look forward to making more memories. How gorgeous is this?!

And then there was our Sonoma trip, where we fell in love with a house on a mountain overlooking vineyards. We tend to not leave New England during summer and to save trips outside for after the season ends. But there is really nothing like the Dry Creek Valley in the height of summer, with big purple grapes hanging from the vines and an exquisite dry heat that my body loves. I have about 10 blog posts about Sonoma left, and for that I apologize. But we helped with harvest and went to some fun events, met really nice people, and most of all relaxed and unlpugged. It’s hard to say goodbye to my favorite, season, but being the optimist I am, I know fall will also bring adventures, delicious food and wine, and great friends and family. And despite how much I love long, warm days, you really can’t beat all that.

When we travel to Sonoma and Napa, there are posts that come out of it, big and small, and then there are the random photos that I take that might not fit into a certain post, but that I still want to share. Every Sonoma and Napa moment is pretty special, if you ask me, and that’s what this blog post is all about on this fine Travel Tuesday. When we stay in Healdsburg, we often drive from there through the Alexander Valley, and it is a drive I always look forward to, especially in the springtime when flowers abound, long before we see even shoots in Boston.

Alexander Valley This time on our drive from Healdsburg to Yountville, I decided I needed to stop the car to run around in the flowers, and my handsome driver happily obliged.

Our Napa Valley day including a very special tasting at Jessup Cellars, but it also included a stop at favorite Mumm Napa, a delicious and casual pizza lunch at Pizzeria Tra Vigne after a tasting at Handwritten Wines (post coming soon!).

Pizzeria Tra Vigne We shared a salad and a couple of pizzas, including the Vespa, which featured chicken apple sausage, mozzarella, oven roasted onions, and spinach. Pizzeria Tra Vigne is the perfect, relaxed place to fill up on delicious food in between wine tastings in the St. Helena area. pizzeria tra vigne Another Napa Valley must-visit for us is Chateau Montelena. Not only is it steeped in history and the subject of one of my favorite movies (I know Bottle Shock is not all that accurate, but I LOVE the scenery and storyline nonetheless.), but it is a stunning property, and they make beautiful wines.

Chateau Montelena Wine club members can rent out these private little islands for events, and we are seriously thinking about it. I want my birthday party on an island at Chateau Montelena. P.S. Chateau Montelena’s Chardonnay is incredible, but their Riesling and Zinfandel literally made me weak in the knees. Swoon-worthy wines.

Chateau Montelena Back in Healdsburg, we loved staying in town and being able to just wander around aimlessly, stopping at various tasting rooms, attending events, trying new restaurants, and settling in at new favorites. A quick stop at Hawley Winery’s tasting room in Healdsburg revealed a luscious, tropical, heady Viognier and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc. A cozy, dimly lit tasting room was a nice respite from the bright and beautiful Northern California sunshine outside.

Hawley tasting room And finally, there was our night out at Cartograph Wines where we discovered the wine of the summer for 2013, their 2012 Rosé of Pinot Noir. It is beautiful, delicious, and made with love. Order some while you still can!

Random, but important moments are what make travel so memorable for me. I don’t need something fancy or long-winded to make a mark on me forever. These are the moments that are simple and easy, and that make me smile when I look back on them.
