The December holiday season is definitely a favorite of mine and a great time to do something a little extra special.  In past years I have reunited with college friends over fancy afternoon tea at the Boston Harbor Hotel; not having seen each other for awhile this year, we decided to meet for bubbly at The Reserve, the new Champagne bar at the Langham Hotel.

Reserve Champagne Bar

Upon entering The Reserve, which is part of the newly redesigned hotel lobby, I was surprised at the drastically different décor from the old hotel. The Langham’s new atmosphere is chic and modern with traditional touches. It’s plush, luxurious, yet muted. It contains a Champagne bar; I am in love.

Over the course of the afternoon, we enjoyed sparkling wine (the Champagne is a wee bit pricey; for a special occasion I would spring for it), a Cremant from Louis Bouillot and sparkling pink bubbles from Roederer Estate in California, a place we visited on one of the most beautiful drives ever. We were provided some nuts and cheese crackers to nibble on while we sipped and sat back, and we also ordered the house-made potato chips with dips. I remembered how much I loved the chips when I had a luxury dining experience at Bond a few months ago; I could not stop eating them!

Whether you visit the Langham for brunch, the chocolate bar, cocktails at Bond, or glasses of bubbly at The Reserve, the experience is always second-to-none and sure to impress, from the service to the food and drinks, all the way through.

I was so glad we made time to relax at The Reserve and would most definitely spend a Sunday afternoon there again. It’s definitely one of those places where life slows down, and you can sit back and think about how good it is.

Cheers!

Every visit to Ireland brings a new-to-us discovery. We have our favorite haunts and things, like the Saturday farmers market  and piles of late night garlic and cheese chips at Supermac’s, but we do our best to try at least one new restaurant.

On this visit, we drove along the coast to the village of Barna to wander along Barna Pier and to check out a renowned restaurant, O’Grady’s at the end of the pier.

The below sign alerts drivers to the fact that the road is ending. Point taken.

The views from Barna are gorgeous, and the ever-changing weather makes them even more spectacular. When we arrived it was bright and sunny, but during the course of our meal all of that changed into lashing rain, clouds, and wind.

Luckily, there’s no place better than a cozy seafood restaurant in the West of Ireland to wait out the storm with a pint of Guinness.

Irish prawn salads are one of my favorites, so I decided to go with that, served with fresh brown bread and Irish butter, for my lunch. I love the tangy Marie Rose sauce on the top, and the prawns were amazing, more like lobster than prawns, really. The portion was heaping and had a good amount of salad greens, onions, and tomatoes underneath. I could definitely eat this for lunch daily.

As the weather got worse, we talked over the crackle of a roaring fire and stared out at the boats and windsurfer braving the chilly downpour.

We continued our wait with a couple of strong, sweet, and creamy Irish coffees. When in Ireland. . .

As the saying goes, Ireland experiences four seasons in a day, and by the time we were paying for our leisurely lunch, the sun was out, and getting ready to set. The one big downside of visiting Ireland in the winter is how early the darkness sets in and how late the sun comes up. There were days I woke up at eight, and it was pitch dark out. Barna Pier

The upside of all of that rain? Rainbows, double and triple rainbows that make me squeal with delight every single time. Like so many other things in Ireland, rainbows just add a little more magic.

Our afternoon spent at O’Grady’s was one of our favorites of our entire trip. The restaurant has won many awards for its fresh, creative cuisine, and they are well-deserved. The service was warm and welcoming; we never felt rushed and really enjoyed being on holiday there. If you find yourself in Ireland, definitely spend a few days in Galway and make Barna Pier a stop along your journey.

What a week! I haven’t felt like blogging or doing much of anything this week with my focus 1000% on Sandy’s destruction in my home state of NJ. I still can not get over the devastation at the shore, and parts of my family are to be without power for at last a week. A favorite tree in our yard uprooted, my sister had to drive to Pennsylvania to get gas for the generator, school is cancelled all week, and everyone, while thankfully fine, is definitely tired. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone suffering right now.

With everything so up in the air and with so many people without power, water, or even their entire homes, I decided to defer my New York City Marathon race entry to 2013. Logistically, getting into the city for bib pickup and then the race would be a nightmare, but mostly I didn’t feel okay celebrating when the city is in shambles.

Not that it compares to what anyone in the affected areas is going through, but I am exhausted. Worrying about my family and then agonizing over the marathon decision have been on my mind 24/7. I’m relieved I have a firm decision.

One thing I would not agonize over is the fact that Pigalle is one of my new favorite restaurants after attending a bar menu tasting there last week. It’s cozy, plays some great jazz music on Monday nights, and the food and wine is superb.

Pigalle

I have really been in a “cozy wine bar” mood lately, so prior to going to Pigalle, I stopped at Sip in Downtown Crossing. It was pretty disappointing. The wine list was not very diverse, they didn’t have my first two choices, it felt very corporate, and the wine I did have tasted like it had been opened for a very long time.

Grabbing a seat at Pigalle gave me exactly what I wanted. Just a few seats line the L-shaped bar, but it was just enough for our party to be comfortable and carry on conversation.

The wine list included a Viognier, one of my favorite whites, so I ordered that and really enjoyed it. Manning the bar was Ian who was delightful to chat with and who made exceptional cocktails he let us sample later in the night.

Monday nights at Pigalle are a new thing. They used to be closed, but they are now open for business and feature jazz every week. The music and vibe were fantastic; I want to make every Monday Pigalle date night.

Bar seats included a glass of crispy bacon and a basket of house made chips snack on while sipping drinks and waiting for the main event.

Pigalle generously provided us with a great mix of their favorites. Oysters with Pigalle’s house mignonette were pure perfection. I loved the fresh cucumber mixed with the briny oysters.

We were also treated  to clams and bacon, takeout containers with delicious noodles, sliders on buttery, heavenly rolls, short ribs topped with mashed potatoes, and soft, decadent eggs in a jar.

Expertly crafted, creative cocktails were fun and delicious. The Seelbach, bourbon, combier, bitters and sparkling wine, had a nice bitterness, a little sparkle, and quite the kick to it. It was definitely a drink I would order again.

With winter looming, Pigalle seems like the perfect place to hunker down on a chilly night to share appetizers or entrees and a good bottle of wine.

Do you have a favorite place you go to when you want something super cozy?
