Smoked Salmon Dip

Thanksgiving officially kicked off the holiday entertaining season. It seems from now until Christmas, every weekend is busy, there are work parties, family get-togethers, and last-minute guests stopping by for cocktails. Our Thanksgiving dinner went very well; in addition to a sage and cider brined turkey, we had buttered carrots, Brussels sprouts with honey and rashers (Irish bacon), brown bread apple stuffing, homemade apple sauce, and a potato and turnip gratin. The only thing that didn’t turn out great was the gratin; since I was cooking away from home I used a much deeper bacon dish and different oven so the cheese cooked too quickly while the potatoes and turnips did not. Luckily there was plenty of other food, including starters like pears with blue and Comte cheeses and brown bread and a super easy salmon dip that literally disappeared in minutes.

You can’t beat a three ingredient recipe, especially when you are cooking an entire meal and need something to keep guests full and happy while they wait for the main event.

red onion

I made this dip to taste, so feel free to experiment with amounts of ingredients and to add things like chopped capers and lemon zest.

Creme Fraiche

I simply mixed about 1/2 cup of chopped smoked salmon, 1/4 cup of finely chopped red onion, and a cup of Crème Fraiche and chilled it until we were ready to serve. When everyone had gathered, we poured glasses of bubbly, plated up some fresh brown bread, and set out all of the little bites on a table by the fire.

Simple, quality ingredients always make the best recipes, as I am reminded when we travel in Europe most of all.

We’re in Rome right now for the next couple of days, then on to Dublin to spend a night with family and then home to Boston again. I have taken hundreds of photos of our travels, food, and wine adventures, and while I would love to stay here, look forward to catching up with life at home.

Are you hosting any holiday events this year?

If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that I ran the 2010 Boston Marathon on Team ALLY for The ALLY Foundation. If you missed it, check out my marathon recap; it is one of my proudest days 🙂

In the 10 months or so since I decided to join Team ALLY, the foundation’s work has become very important to me, and I jumped at the chance to buy tickets for their Pink for a Change Gala at Beacon Rock Mansion in Newport, RI.

The dress theme of the event was festive pink attire, and believe me, I stressed about what to wear. In the end, and at the last second on the day before, I found a dress that ended up being just perfect, if I do say so myself 😉

On the way to Newport we stopped at Travessia Urban Winery in New Bedford, MA for our wine club event and to catch the heartbreaking last 30 minutes of the US World Cup game. I’m still proud of how our team played, and when Americans catch on that soccer is way more athletic and interesting than our national pastime, we will have an even better team!

We arrived at Beacon Rock Mansion after driving through downtown Newport which is one of my favorite places to spend a summer day.

The mansion had a long driveway that eventually led to this view.

Each side of the palatial home was flanked by harbor views for miles around, to the left, Sail Newport, straight ahead, Goat Island, and farther off, downtown Newport. We stopped for a photo op.

Pink for a Change Gala

The Beacon Rock Mansion was decorated simply for the event in The ALLY Foundation pink and green, and there were photos of Ally, her friends, and foundation supporters throughout the downstairs.

The ALLY Foundation

Part of the fundraising efforts for the evening was a silent auction, and I was so grateful when Cakebread Cellars responded to my request for a donation with this cookbook, apron, and hat. The ALLY Foundation included me as part of their Gala Committee, and I was glad to be able to help in some way.

The food for the event was FANTASTIC. It was cocktail party style eating, my favorite way to go, and there were passed hors d’œuvre like Kobe beef sliders, puffs filled with brie and jam, shrimp, clam cakes, spanakopita, and sushi rolls passed all evening long.

There was also a raw bar with a constant supply of delicious oysters, littleneck clams, shrimp, and lobster.

Inside there was a station set up with crudite, cheese, and baskets of grilled bread with various spreads. Don’t worry, I spilled some amazing olive tapenade on my dress. You can’t take me anywhere. . .

The party was fun and festive, and while rain threatened and I felt a few drops, it never poured, at least as long as we were there. Luckily, we got to spend the entire time outside, and we were entertained by a really great cover band, The Rolling Who?. I may have even danced a little.

I am so grateful that the weather held off, because it would have been a shame to have to miss views like these.

All in all a very lovely evening was had by all, and I look forward to this event next year. If you live in the Boston area, The ALLY Foundation’s next event is their Flip Flop Regatta in Charlestown. It looks like quite the party, and I am hoping to attend.

I hope you all enjoy your Sunday. There will be more World Cup watching for us as well as wine tasting at Bin Ends Wine and some family visits. Our adorable nephews are visiting from Italy, and they are SO much fun!

Have a good day everyone!

If they did, I would be doing it tonight! I was searching through On Demand, and there seem to be all sorts of yoga videos, but none for cranky people. 🙂 It was a great great weekend in New Jersey, but I am exhausted and not at all ready to face a crazy week. A hectic Friday led right into a 6 hour drive in torrential downpours, so we arrived at my mom’s house at around midnight. I was too wired to sleep well, and woke up Saturday morning to a ton of work email to tend to and then went straight into helping my sister prep for the party.

I got put in charge of the penne with tomato vodka sauce:

Canned crushed tomatoes

Olive oil to coat the bottom of a big pot

Lots of chopped garlic and about half of an onion

prosciutto di parma (I didn’t see much benefit to adding this, so I would leave it out next time)

tsp oregano

fresh ground black pepper and sea salt

1 shot of vodka

heavy cream to taste (to a big ol pot we added maybe 3/4 cup of cream)

1/4 grated parmesan

Sautee onions and garlic until soft and the garlic is golden, then add everything but the cream and cheese. The cream and cheese can be added at the very end, and we shared the load doing this. I stirred and she poured so that nothing would congeal or get yucky. If the sauce was for my house I would definitely add crushed red pepper flakes because I love spice in my tomato cream sauces, but this was a kid party. We served it over regular penne. I would do whole wheat at home. It was easy peasy, delicious, and a real crowd pleaser.

There was so much to eat and drink at the bbq: my mom’s famous baked lima beans with brown sugar and bacon, potato salad (mom’s famous again!), green salad, fruit salad, sausage and peppers, teriyaki chicken meatballs, rolls, pasta, and these smazing soft pretzels that they buy at a special pretzel bakery.

I had LOTS of orange and yellow peppers

There was also a lot of this:

On a side note, we live a couple of miles from the Harpoon Brewery, and it has trumped Sam Adams as my favorite local beer! I have been to a couple of charity events at Harpoon, and the fact that they do them for free makes the beer even better to me. I liked their Brown Session Ale and their Crystal Wheat, but give me a classic Harpoon IPA, and I am a happy girl. Remind me to blog someday about Yankee Lobster , an awesome fresh fish restaurant yards from Harpoon. Yankee Lobster roll + Harpoon IPA = summer in my mouth!

Ok back to the bbq post! There was also cake, a Dorah cake with lemon filling for my niece and a chocolate mousse filled cake for my hub’s belated birthday. Sadly, I really don’t like many cakes any more. They are far too sweet for my palate. That’s probably a good thing!

Overall, I ate well and didn’t stress. I also brought Amazing Grass with me so I was not without my green smoothies. Do you stress about food when you are out of your routine? I came up with a few very simple tips this weekend to make these times easier:

1) Eat as healthily as possible for the situation you are in. Seems like a no brainer, but other people’s homes are not stocked like mine, and rather than freaking out, I make do. I made my smoothies with organic regular milk, something I definitely don’t do at home, but it was fine and tasty for a couple of days.

2) Water water water! When I travel I tend to not drink in the car so I don’t have to stop. This is silly. Dehydration makes you tired and cranky and more likely to feel hunger pangs that aren’t there. Drinking my normal 80 ounces or so kept me feeling good and also kept me from unneccesary snacks.

3) Enjoy! I had a little bit of everything. If I didn’t like it, I didn’t finish it. I waited for at least 30 minutes to go for a seconds plate, and when hungry a few hours after the party, I filled up on fresh cherries to feel full and satisfied. Trying all of the party food felt great, tasted great, and totally kept me from feeling deprived.

4) Don’t overdo the post party “detox”. Other than having lots of water and veggies tonight and doing some stretching, I am going to relax. Traveling to events can be exhausting, and while a little voice was telling me earlier to push myself to run, my knees are sore, and I am just feeling overwhelmed about work. A weekend off won’t undo your exercise/training progress. It will most likely make you better when you return!

I hope you all had a great weekend. I am off to watch “Mondays in the Sun” and to stock my ipod with some new “Notes in Spanish” Spanish podcasts for my walk to and from work. Tomorrow night I am having dinner with friends (I think Ashmont Grill wine club!) and will announce the winner of the Nigella giveaway. Have a GREAT night!
