Ahhh Napa. Even though it has only been a couple of months since our last visit, it feels like it’s been a year. Sipping on some Mumm Napa sparkling wine at the Morton’s bubbly tasting a couple of weeks ago brought me back to one of my favorite places in Napa Valley.

Today is a gray, dreary day that is also,  for me, filled with sneezing and itchy eyes from allergies, a sore throat, aches, and a fever from a miserable spring cold, feeling a complete lack of energy and more than a little frustration. It seems like every time I start to get in shape and feel healthy again, I am once again in bed with some sort of illness wanting to eat tortilla chips and watch TV.  Reminiscing about a perfect day of tasting wine seemed like the perfect pick-me-up.

Mumm Napa

A gray, rainy day in wine country is still a good day, especially in the glass-enclosed patio at Mumm Napa, with no plans and no place to be but there.

Mumm Napa

Mumm is a winery that we visit again and again because of its beauty but also because of its tasting options You can choose to taste various still or sparkling wines, or you can order a flute or two of bubbly to sip and savor as you relax.

Mumm Brut Rose

If anything makes me smile more than bubbly, it’s pink bubbly. Mumm’s Brut Rosé is pretty to look at and even lovelier to drink. Strawberry flavors abound, and tiny bubbles delight the palate making this wine perfect for any occasion from picnics for two to Mother’s Day brunch.

You really can’t go wrong with your choice of wines at Mumm.

The tasting room staff at Mumm is fantastic, and our server not only gave me a complimentary tasting of  DVX Brut Rosé to compare with my Brut Rosé , but he also gave me a cute little wine charm.

To me, Mumm is everything a vacation should be.

Morton’s holds some amazing wine events, it is true. Last year I attended Morton’s Back Bay’s bubbly event and special reserve wine tasting, both featuring signature Morton’s dishes, fantastic wines, and their across-the-board impeccable service. So when my friend Megan suggested we attend a sparkling wine tasting at the Morton’s Seaport location, I was definitely on board.

Morton's Seaport

The Morton’s Seaport location sings spring and summer to me. Overlooking the bustling Boston Harbor, the restaurant has that feel that only places near the water have, open, bright, almost like you are on vacation. Megan had gotten together a group of us for the tasting, and Daisy and I were the first to arrive. Before we headed into the tasting room, Jen joined us.

One thing I love about the tastings at Morton’s is that many of them are seated. It takes the juggling of a glass, a plate, a camera, and a notebook out of the equation, and makes the whole experience more comfortable. The room was set up like it would be for any special event, with simple but gorgeous centerpieces on the crisp white linen tablecloths. From my seat, I could see the harbor, and off in the distance planes taking off at Logan.

Morton's

After awhile, Megan and Bianca also joined us, and soon after, the sweet sound of the popping of corks began. Our first sparkling wine was from the Roederer Estate in California’s Anderson Valley. The Anderson Valley Brut was probably my favorite of the entire evening. Crisp, with a touch of pear flavor and that great, yeasty nose that I love, it went perfectly with the food pairing, a tarragon lobster salad roll that will soon be featured on Morton’s menu.

The second wine, the Louis Roederer, was the only Champagne of the evening. True story: it annoys mewhen people refer to all sparkling wine as Champagne. Champagne comes from the Champagne region of France and must be made of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, or a combination of those, no other grapes. Sparkling wine is made in the méthode champenoise in other places, but it is not Champagne.

Louis Roederer, the original Roederer, is located in the Champagne region of France, and while the Louis Roederer was the priciest of the bubbly we tried, it was actually my least favorite. I am not sure if it was the food it was paired with, but it actually tasted a little bitter to me.

crab cakes

I did, however, love the food, which just kept coming. Morton’s crab cakes, which are all fresh, meaty crab, went well with a creamy mustard sauce. The crab cakes are usually what I order for my entrée at Morton’s, and I adored this mini version.

smoked salmon pizza

The third wine of the evening was another from Roederer Estate, their Brut Rosé, a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. I loved the Rosé’s coppery pink color, hints of strawberry flavors, and celebratory sparkle. I could drink sparkling Rosé year round, and I definitely love this wine. I also loved the smoked salmon and crème fraiche pizza and chicken tenders that made their way on to our table. These very different dishes showed the versatility of sparkling wine as a food wine; it goes surprisingly well with fried food, and bubbly and pizza is one of my all time favorite combinations!

The final sparkling wine of the evening was from a winery near and dear to my heart, Mumm Napa. We have visited Mumm multiple times, and I absolutely love their sparkling and still wines, the people who work there, and their gorgeous views. The Mumm Cuvee M is slightly sweet but also rich, think honey and brioche. This, to me, is a very well-balanced wine with a level of sweetness that I can tolerate.  It is perfect sipped as an aperitif but also went well with the giant chocolate covered strawberries that were our final course.

I think we were all pleasantly surprised at the amount of quality food that came with this tasting. For $35, you are served multiple plates of appetizers, a dessert, and four glasses of wine. It is a great way to spend time with friends, and I think we may have a standing reservation for Morton’s tasting events!

Good rainy morning! It is a super dark, rainy, chilly Saturday here in Boston, and other than a few hours of working on a few marketing pieces for work and walking doggies, I have no plans!! Wheeeeee! Having an open day makes me happier than anything.

We really kicked the weekend off right last night with a night of completely unplanned fun. I had a really frustrating day, the reason I am working again today, but all of that was erased when my husband came to meet me at Mistral near my office in Boston’s Back Bay. We each ordered a cocktail off of Mistral’s very tempting menu. I had the Harvest Martini, perfect for the cool and cloudy evening it had become. The martini consisted of Grey Goose vodka, apple schnapps, reduced local cider, and cranberry juice. It had a pretty apple chip floating in it.

This cocktail was the perfect blend of sweet from the apple cider and tart from the cranberry juice. New England in a glass! We enjoyed sitting at Mistral’s bar sipping our drinks for quite awhile. Mistral is very swanky and beautifully decorated, great for a very special evening out but still comfortable enough to go to for drinks after work.

A neat contrast between the cool, concrete and tile bar and the beautiful dining area.

For dinner we decided to wander around the South End a bit and ended up once again at The Beehive on Tremont Street. Last year I had a few not-so-great Beehive experiences, but the last two or three have been fantastic. The beehive is an underground bistro richly decorated with a bohemian vibe, nightly live jazz, and great food. It gets very crowded, but we were lucky to get two seats at the end of the bar. For some reason we love to eat at the bar on a Friday night. There’s something a little more cozy about it than a table, especially if you get the two corner seats.

For our meals we decided on the raw bar platter for two, which is a beautiful combination of oysters, lobster, tuna tartare, shrimp ceviche, and shrimp cocktail with a variety of sauces including mignonette, cocktail sauce, and garlic aioli. We also ordered the local fried clams and a Greek style wedge salad with yogurt dressing. The rest of my Friday meals consisted of yogurt, apples, and a  spinach and chickpea salad with almonds, so I was pretty hungry by the time the food arrived! Luckily, it was delicious.

With my meal I also had a glass of Mumm Napa Prestige. It brought back great memories of sitting on the oak terrace at Mumm a few weeks ago, and made me SO excited to be back in Napa next month and to meet some of you in San Francisco!!! While we ate, The Beehive really filled up. The music was GREAT. If you are ever in Boston I would recommend stopping by even just for a drink or coffee and to hear the live music. The Beehive is one of those places great for people “my age”. In a town FULL of college students, it is often hard to find live music in a location where you won’t get jostled, spilled on, or worse, but The Beehive offers a nice, sophisticated environment with music, and you can still hear your dining companion.

Fall favorite – pots of mums everywhere!

After The Beehive the plan was to go home. As we were walking back to the car, we saw that Brix Wine Shop was full of people, so we decided to see what the commotion was. They were having a “Battle of the Cabernets” tasting. Never shy to taste wine, I joined in 🙂 We tasted four cabernets, my favorites being from Red Lion and Montes. We bought a bottle of each. The most fun part was speaking with the rep from Classic Wine Imports who gave us some great hints for our next visit to wine country. We also got chatting to a bunch of other attendees. I love meeting strangers!

Now we REALLY planned on going home, but we saw that, like every first Friday of the month, it was open artists studios in the SOWA buildings in the South End. Completely free, unless you buy art of course, this event is awesome. All of the local artists have their studios open, usually with wine and cheese and other goodies, so that you can browse the art, mingle with other Bostonians, and have a really good time. I loved wandering through the halls of this crazy old building which I think was once a mill. I met a couple of Chinese cresteds named Brandy and Slippers and to
ok in lots of gorgeous paintings, sculpture, jewelry, and even hats.

Though I loved seeing all of the art and am interested in starting to buy from local artists, I loved the hats the most. They were in the studio of Milliner Marie Galvin, and they were stunning. If you have been to a wedding in Ireland, you will see that most women wear creations like Ms. Galvin’s, and I just love it. I am now waiting for our next Irish wedding so I can buy one!!

All in all we really had a fabulous night, none of which was planned. I am glad that I somehow found the energy to keep going because we stumbled across so much of what makes Boston great. I will be back later with the winners of the giveaway, and I promise I have some un-Boston posts planned for the next few days, hopefully an autumn road trip tomorrow if the weather cooperates! For this morning I have my Lyons tea and the windows open enjoying the Irish weather morning. Hope that you are all having a great Saturday so far!
