World’s End

Hello from Ireland! I am likely back to bed as this publishes. Or working. The one thing about consulting/owning your own company, is that taking time off is awkward. Or somewhat impossible. But one of the things I am most thankful this year is work, so I will not complain! Do you have a half day today? If you are traveling, be safe!

November has been kind to us so far. I find it really hard to believe that winter is coming, yet I am certainly not naïve enough to be hopeful. Knowing that soon enough, we will be surrounded by piles of miserable white, we spent Sunday on another Massachusetts day trip. World’s End in Hingham is a spectacular place to visit by boat; each summer weekend, literally dozens of boats line up, side-by-side for partying and swimming in the sun.

It turns out, getting to World’s End by car and spending some time on dry land is just as spectacular. After paying $5 each to enter the grounds, we did some easy walking toward the highest point on the peninsula.

There we got to see some fabulous views of the Boston skyline.

The hike was fairly easy but did involve some steep uphills. My Boston Marathon training legs were very happy about it. Walking the entire peninsula took about an hour, with stopping to take some photos sprinkled throughout. World’s End has lots of benches overlooking the various vistas, and we saw several groups picnicking. We just kept moving, loving being outdoors and commented several times that it would have been a waste to spend the day inside doing work or chores.  In general, since my nana passed away and we were sick before and after, I haven’t exercised at all. It felt good to get a little sweaty and to get my heart rate up. I definitely tend toward seasonal blues, so I need to remind myself how much a little sunshine and movement does to cheer me up.

It doesn’t have to be summer to take a jog on a rocky beach, after all. Being near the water is enough to turn my mood around.

Does being outside make you as deliriously happy as it makes me? How do you get your sunshine fix when it gets cold?

Staying true to our plan of a day trip a weekend, yesterday we embarked on another New England adventure, this time a visit to our favorite local winery, Travessia Urban Winery in New Bedford, plus a few extra stops that made for a perfect day. We were joined by our soon-to-be-married friends Adrienne and Matt; wine and beer tasting along the Coastal Wine Trail, for those of you in MA and RI, is a great way to spend a day catching up with friends.

Our first stop was lunch in New Bedford at Ginger Grill and Tea House, a great Korean restaurant just a few doors down from Travessia.  This was our second time eating at Ginger Grill, and we once again loved the food, the clean, calming atmosphere, the prices, and the friendly staff. Starting your day full of fresh, flavorful food from Ginger Grill is the way to go.

I had the vegetarian Bibim noodles with a complimentary side of carrot kimchi salad and a pot of spicy ginger tea.

The flavors were so bright and clean, and I felt really good after lunch. An added bonus, the compostable plates!

Once we had eaten, we walked down to Travessia for a tasting. While I love all of their wines, I was most excited to try a new release, Dilemma. Unsurprisingly, we loved this wine, which is a mix of 60% Pinot Grigio and 40% Pinot Noir, both Massachusetts-grown. It is an impressive, well-balanced wine with a nice, almost mouthwatering acidity and a hint of sweetness. With the big movement toward local food, it is incredibly exciting to have access to such high quality wines that are grown and made just under an hour from Boston.

After we finished our Travessia tasting, we decided that, since we were so close, we would check out the Just Beer brewery and tasting room down the road in Westport.

Just Beer

Just Beer, formerly the Buzzard’s Bay Brewing Company, is a small brewery on a beautiful property, offering tastings on Saturdays only during the Spring. While we visited, we tasted both a light beer, their Golden Flounder, and a slightly darker, more amber ale, Moby D.

Not usually a fan of light beers, I did enjoy the Golden Flounder and think it would be perfect for a hot summer day. But we liked the Moby D the best and decided to bring some home with us.

Our next stop was right down the road, Westport Rivers Winery. If you live in Boston, you may have tried one of Westport Rivers’ delicious sparkling wines. I definitely have enjoyed their Blanc de blancs on more than one occasion, but they have so much more than sparkling wine!

Westport Rivers Winery

The Westport Rivers tasting room and store are located in a beautiful old farmhouse overlooking the currently bare vineyards. There will be leaves of green someday, New England. Someday.

The tasting menu for the day was a mix of still and sparkling wines including what ended up being my favorites, the Westport Brut, Rkatsiteli, and the Pineau de Pinot dessert wine. I loved the toasty, brioche-like nose and flavors of the Brut. The Rkatsiteli, besides being fun to pronounce (the R is its own syllable!) is a grape originally from the country of Georgia and produces a fresh lemony wine with some nice mineral notes, and the Pineau de Pinot is a lovely pink dessert wine that is not too sweet at all. The tasting room staff recommended it mixed with bubbly for a nice little cocktail. Yum.

We finished up our day with a drive over to the lovely Horseneck Beach and an early dinner/second lunch at The Back Eddy. I think we were all a little tired from the fresh air and tastings at this point, and it was nice to sit back with some clam chowder while looking out at these views. I can not wait until summer!

New England has so much to offer, and I love that I can have days like yesterday to remind me just how lucky we are to live here.

Have you ever been to a local winery or brewery where you live?

I have never taken so many photos in one day before, but the Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff at Truro Vineyards was such a beautiful and delicious event, I just couldn’t stop! As a result, I am splitting the day up into 2 parts, and I will post part 2 tomorrow.

Sunday started off gray and humid in Boston, but by the time we were on Cape Cod, the clouds had split, and a beautiful blue sky and cool, dry air had taken over.

On the way up, we stopped at a Cape favorite, Box Lunch, for their famous rollwiches. I’ll cover that in a separate Cape Cod food post this week 🙂

We arrived at Truro Vineyards early which gave us a chance to wander their beautiful property as well as the winding country road that the winery is located on.

The Truro Vineyards tasting room and tasting pavilion are surrounded by vineyards, and the tasting room/store is housed in a classic old New England home.

Their variety of wines, including those in their signature lighthouse bottles, fill the store.

We eventually saw other people making their way under the tasting tent set up on the front lawn, so we went to check in as well. (For the sake of full disclosure, I did receive a complimentary ticket to this event.)

Of course, I found the winery dog, Betty, pretty quickly. I threw the ball for her oh, maybe 20 times, and she was still going strong when we left. She is exactly the type of dog I would love to have. There was food everywhere, and she didn’t try to eat any of it!

Naturally, our first taste of wine came from Truro Vineyards. My favorite was the 2008 Vignoles, but I also enjoyed their cranberry wine, which I tried at last year’s event.

Next stop, Newport Vineyards. You may remember them from the holiday wine festival that we went to last December.

I am a pretty big fan of their (Atlantic Wine Competition Award Winning) Newport Riesling with its refreshing mineral flavors,  and I was excited to try it again. I loved their table presentation and its picnic like theme.

A couple of tastes of wine made us a little hungry, and luckily there was some delicious food on offer. I enjoyed several phyllo cups filled with mascarpone cheese and topped with specialty jellies and jams from The Chatham Jam and Jelly Shop. With its little bit of heat, I enjoyed the red pepper jelly the most. It paired perfectly with the very creamy cheese.

There was also some cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake from Wild Flour Bakery. The flourless chocolate cake was one of the most chocolate-y decadent bites of dessert I have ever had. It was so rich that 2 bites probably would have made a completely satisfying dessert.

The vanilla cheesecake with honeyed walnuts was also amazing.

Of course, we had to stop to visit our favorite winery’s table. We first tried Travessia wines at last year’s kickoff event, and we have been big fans and wine club members ever since. The Bastard Rosé, as I have said many times on this blog, is my favorite summer wine.

It was also great to see Travessia’s owner and winemaker, Marco Montez. Marco is such a nice guy, and he has a lot of interesting information about his wines.

I am looking forward to a visit to Travessia’s winery sometime soon for a barrel tasting of their newest red.

I am off to watch the finale of Lost, so I will leave you wanting more Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff deliciousness. Tomorrow I am going to a lunch with the CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farms, so I will have a recap of that as well. Lots of exciting things going on!

Have a great night everyone! I know all of the great sunshine, wine, food, and people we met today have tired me out!
