With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you might be feeling the frenzy of the holiday season starting to creep in. While I try to not let joyous occasions stress me out, I am definitely noticing that the calendar is full through January and I am trying to juggle work and life accordingly.

Since we will be traveling throughout the holiday season, including another Thanksgiving in Ireland, we wanted to take time out to get local family together before the madness sets in.

I love a late afternoon Saturday party. It’s a combination of lunch/dinner, and lighting a fire as the sun sets makes for a warm and convivial atmosphere. When entertaining, I try as much as possible to choose foods that I can prep ahead of time.

We had a ton of work to get the house ready, so easy-to-prep food was even more important. We bought our house almost a year ago, but after being scammed by a shady plumber, we have had to put off a lot of the things we have wanted to do with the house. It’s still cozy and we love it, but decorating has taken a backseat to important things like heat!

Ultimately I would like to have a beachy/nautical house, so I have been incorporating little touches like sand dollars on a window sill, serving platters with crabs and seashells on them, nautical towels, and little lobster bowls.

Now for the food! I set up the table for the first hour of the party with the following:

Cucumbers topped with herb cream cheese and tomatoes – I think the red and green would be fun for a Christmas party, and it’s nice to have something light on hand when the rest of the meal is so heavy.

A cheese plate – two hard cheeses and one spreadable cheese, crackers, and bread

Guests trickled in, and we waited until just about everyone had arrived to put out the main course:

Bacon-Wrapped Sausage with Brown Sugar – I forgot to take a pic, but you can find one in this post. This is the easiest, most decadent party food ever.

Mixed Greens with Butternut Squash, Red Onions, Dried Cranberries, Pecans, and a Cider Vinaigrette – I roasted the butternut squash with cinnamon prior to adding it to the salad, and it was a delicious touch. The dressing was a super easy blend of apple cider, shallots, and olive oil.

Guinness Beef Stew – This stew is SO easy. Once the early prep was done, I left it on low all day. The beef was falling apart by the time it was served.

Chicken Pot Pie – Another super easy dish that seems daunting, this one started with sweet onions cooked in butter, followed by chopped up chicken thighs, chicken stock, herbs, chopped red potatoes (which I par-cooked prior), and torn spinach. I simmered it on low until about a half an hour before serving, then added a bit of milk, put it in an aluminum tray, topped with store-bought crust, and baked for about 30 minutes. Sadly some of the gravy overflowed onto the crust, but it was still tasty!

Pumpkin Pie Dip – addictive. This is a mix of pumpkin pie filling, cream cheese, and sour cream, served with gingersnaps and Nilla cookies. It was so easy and so good! Our guests also brought cake and cupcakes, so I didn’t make the Caramel Apple Dip I planned on.

And finally, if you know me you may have guessed there was bubbly. We had two options of bubbles, one from Graham Beck and another from Mumm Napa, as well as Brooklyn Brewery beer and some amazing beers our guests brought, including my husband’s cousin’s homebrew which is out of this world.

I used to get so stressed about entertaining, but I feel like I am starting to get in the groove a little more. The cooking is definitely my favorite part; I wouldn’t mind leaving the cleaning to someone else!

Now I am in Thanksgiving-planning mode. Do you know what you are cooking yet this holiday season? If you need any Thanksgiving recipe ideas, check out some posts from the past!

A Day in the Life

Lately I have been loving when bloggers share a snapshot into their daily lives. It’s not vacation or some fabulous event; it’s just the every day real side that is really interesting to me. We all know social media puts pressure on us every once in awhile, so a straightforward “day in the life” can be refreshing,

So to give you a break in my Sonoma posts (which WOULD be my every day if I had my wish), here’s a day in my life this week. I’m a Communications and Media Relations Manager for a high end hotel, and I love it. My days vary, but here’s a little peek. I would love it if you let me know what your every day looks like in the comments!

6:30 a.m. Rise and shine. . . when I work out after work I take a shower then, so that cuts a few morning minutes. I am trying to make myself get up earlier to exercise, but man is it dark out these days!

7:00 a.m. Mix up a spinach smoothie, pack our lunches and snacks, give the cats treats and get ready to hustle out the door.

7:20 a.m. Give the cats kisses and hop in the car with my husband for our commute together. Do makeup in the car, make fun Spotify playlists to wake us up and get us pumped for the day. As tired as we often are, I try to remember how lucky we are just to be going to meaningful work from a home we love.

7:55 a.m. Arrive at work. Change from flip flops to real shoes, put on my nametag, and grab a cup of coffee.

8:15 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.   Check our Tripadvisor reviews and social media channels. As a Social Media Manager, I am pretty much always on call to check our channels, so there usually isn’t a ton first thing, unless we had people engaging while I was sleeping. We love engagement!

9:00 a.m.  On Thursdays I join a team meeting where I share a report. Other mornings I am usually working on my to-do list. I am HUGE on paper calendars and checklists, and making them helps me to organize and prioritize.

10:00 a.m. On this particular day I have a phone call about a TV shoot. Media relations is one of my favorite things, so I am always thrilled to have calls with press!

11:00 a.m.  Check social media channels and respond. Spend some time seeking out engaged community members and bloggers to follow.

12:00 p.m. Draft a press release

12:30 p.m.  Respond to more emails

1:00 p.m. Lunch in the cafeteria and a quick walk along the Charles. In my earlier career days, I thought that NOT taking a break was so badass. Now I know I work better with a little sunshine and good food and levity.

1:30 p.m. Prepare a PowerPoint deck for my boss to review, work with our ad agency on creative direction and copy for upcoming ad

2:00 p.m. Prepare for our team meeting by pulling social media stats and writing a report of Marketing initiatives. Though I work with everyone on a daily basis, it’s always great to have  an official time to sit down and to share what’s going on. It’s a busy time of year with a lot of events coming up. We don’t want anyone to miss out!

3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Team meeting

4:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Work on website updates, write new copy, check emails, check in on social media channels, cross things off list, prepare a report for the next day.

5:00 p.m. Change into running clothes and run 3-4 miles. I took a long break from running, and it feels SO good to be back. Time off always leaves me with fresh legs and a desire to move!

6:15 p.m.  Arrive home, check work email and social channels, stretch

6:45 p.m. Start on dinner while reading blogs, usually having a dance party in the kitchen

7:30 p.m.  Eat a quick dinner, usually while checking work email or social stuff, pack dinner leftovers for the husband’s lunch

8:30 p.m.  Shower

8:45 p.m.  Sit down to blog, mayyyyyybe have a glass of wine Smile

9:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Hang out with my husband when he’s not working, catch up on reality TV most of the time

11:15 p.m.  Take a melatonin, prep clothes for the next day, set alarm, and head to bed

I should note that I also eat ALL day long. I am always uncomfortably hungry so yogurt, almonds, fruit, string cheese etc make appearances all over.  Nobody wants a hungry Meghan.

I didn’t really stop to reflect on my five (!) year blog anniversary when it passed this June. Life and work are busy, and it is boat season after all! Summer tends to consume most free time; behind a computer is not where anyone wants to be during this season!

It was Friday night when I was looking for a photo of a friend’s dog, a beautiful, soulful animal who won’t be with us much longer, when I dove into my laptop’s photo archive back to 2009 and started reliving the journey in photos.

We bloggers, whipping our cameras and phones out at all possible occasions (um, like the other day while our broken down boat was being towed) can surely be a nuisance to our loved ones who just want to eat dinner, but the recorded life history that results is pretty amazing.

Being able to recall a five year snapshot in photos was a fun journey to see how much I have learned and grown and done. Just for fun, I thought I would share some favorite photos and posts and memories. I would love to hear yours! Feel free to share posts or memories in the comments. And thank you for reading today or yesterday or five years ago.

There was that time I up and quit my publishing job with nothing to fall back on, headed off to California, had pneumonia, and got a new nephew, all within a month. If you ever get the chance, definitely visit Moss Beach Distillery. California is pure magic, I tell you.

Half Moon Bay

There have been many (but not enough) trips to visit family in Ireland, and a very moving trip to Northern Ireland. Belfast and Derry were places that have stayed with me through the years.

There have also been three marathons, two Boston Marathons and one New York. Running has, at times, been a defining activity in my life, and while I am out of shape now, those finish lines will always be with me.

Blogging has brought me many close friends and fun blogger dinners and trips, but one of my favorite years brought three blogger friends’ weddings within a few weeks! Here’s a recap of Megan’s wedding. Each wedding was a different reflection of the amazing couple being celebrated, and it was so sweet to be able to grow so close to them and to be part of their special days.

There is so much more I could share from those five years of photos, but I will leave it at this for now. I laughed and cried over the gains and losses and changes that have taken place. There has been lots of wine and lots of dreaming of places near and far, but mostly it has been about the people and animals who have been blessings in my life. At the risk of sounding trite and cheesy, life is good, and I am one lucky lady!
