As much as I like having access to all Boston has to offer, I more than love escaping to wide open spaces outside the city, whether it be to the ocean or places a bit further inland. One favorite quaint New England spot is Longfellow’s Wayside Inn in Sudbury, an easy drive from Boston, and perfect for a festive lunch or dinner during the holiday season.

We recently celebrated my in-laws’ anniversary at the Wayside Inn, and it was an absolutely perfect day for strolling the grounds of the historic inn, then warming up inside with a delicious traditional New England meal and cocktails.

The Martha Mary chapel is a must-visit while at Wayside, as is the path behind the inn, where a beautiful pond and forest await.

Inside, you will definitely feel like you stepped back in time! The Wayside Inn has a fascinating history which has many famous players involved, It is definitely haunted!

I had done a long run the morning of our chilly visit to Sudbury, and I was craving all of the warm comfort food in the world! A cold Meeting House Punch, made with beer, rum, lemon, and brown sugar was the perfect way to start the afternoon, and I enjoyed bites of lobster pie, paired perfectly with mashed potatoes and squash, along with classic New England clam chowder.

Seriously, bring your appetite when you visit!

I never tire of really good bacon-wrapped scallops, and these were excellent, with crispy bacon and sweet, tender scallops, just as they should be.

I was the only one craving dessert after all that, but I guess an 11 mile run will do that to a girl. Pecan Chocolate Chip Bourbon Pie was gooey and warm and exquisite, with dollops of fresh cream setting off all of that chocolate-y richness.

The service at the Wayside Inn is outstanding, and the place is just so cozy and festive. We lingered over a long late lunch and left feeling stuffed and super relaxed.

Winter getaways seem to be the topic of conversation more than ever this year. I don’t know about you, but I have become desperate to unplug from the world on weekends, and being near the ocean has been my saving grace.

A few weeks ago, we started discussing a possible winter trip to Martha’s Vineyard. We craved being on a boat, hiking, good food and wine, and quiet, and we knew that we could find all of that close to home on MV.

As fate might have it, just a couple of days after that discussion, I received an email from the owners of the Nobnocket Boutique Inn on Martha’s Vineyard, inviting us to come and stay for a Valentine’s getaway. The timing was absolutely perfect, and after swooning over the inn’s website photos, we were soon counting down the days until we left Woods Hole for Martha’s Vineyard.

One major perk of visiting Martha’s Vineyard off-season? We left mid-day on Friday and hit absolutely no traffic. The ferry was fairly empty, and the entire trip was a breeze. Once we drove off the ferry in Vineyard Haven, it was about two minutes to Nobnocket. Vineyard Haven’s adorable town center is easy walking distance from the inn, and you’ll likely encounter a few dozen turkeys along the way!

Upon our arrival, we were welcomed with offers of coffee, tea, water, wine, and we chose tea, which we enjoyed while chatting with inn owners Annabelle and Simon.

The common areas of the inn are welcoming and cozy, and, like the rest of the property, decorated with beautiful little details everywhere you turn.

The breakfast room is also an all-day oasis, with coffee and tea, cold drinks, filtered water, snacks, and a few nightcap options.

The surroundings are just as lovely as the inside of the inn. A fresh snow on the island made things just a bit more sparkly, and the trees, including massive holly trees, brought a nice touch of natural beauty right up to the doors of the inn. Another perk of winter? The trees aren’t grown in, and you can easily see the harbor in the distance.

Also, the turkeys! Who knew that Martha’s Vineyard had SO many turkeys?

Before settling into our room, we toured the other guest rooms, each delightfully appointed with its own unique details. The above room is as it was in the original home, with details like a brick fireplace and lots of beautiful dark wood that has been lovingly treated, giving it a more lodge-y, masculine look than the others.

Rooms upstairs are bright and sunny, each with its own color scheme that’s perfectly woven throughout. I appreciate an eye for detail like this immensely; I certainly don’t have it! Throughout the weekend we continuously pointed out little details that we hadn’t noticed earlier.

Martha's Vineyard Nobnocket Boutique Inn has managed to perfectly blend chic design and clean lines with beachy coziness, making every space feel warm, welcoming, and relaxing. Our room was no exception, with a plush and comfy bed, lots of pillows, bathrobes, slippers, a fireplace, and a bathroom that was to-die-for.

How amazing is this tub? What I didn’t capture is the flat-screen TV on the wall behind it. I love a good, super hot soak more than anything, and I am surprised I left that space all weekend long.

Attention to detail extended beyond design and into every aspect of the day,  from turndown to turndown.

On our first night we were greeted with homemade lemon cookies (which I knew about from their Instagram post earlier in the day!) And yes, we turned in for the night by 8:08 on our first night.

Breakfasts were works of art. On our first day, yogurt parfaits, poached eggs, bacon, and toast started our day.

And when we arrived back home were greeted by the most decadently delicious chocolate chip cookies and chocolate covered strawberries. To.die.for.

The next morning there was more breakfast art; a bento box of yogurt and fruit, flaky homemade sausage rolls, local baguette and scones, and the best ginger pear marmalade from New Lane Sundries.

We were thoroughly spoiled with treats, comfy spaces, and lots of laughs throughout the weekend, and it wasn’t easy to leave. If you’re craving a relaxing getaway, keep Nobnocket Boutique Inn at top of mind. Their specials and packages page is a great place to start!

More on Martha’s Vineyard in the winter to come. . .

Our stay was generously hosted by the inn. All opinions are my own. Thank you again to Annabelle and Simon for such a fantastic weekend!

It was a beautiful New England weekend, perfect for a getaway to Mystic, Connecticut. The kind people at the Inn at Mystic  invited us to be their guests for a night, and since I hadn’t been to Mystic since I was very young, we were excited to make a weekend of it.

There’s a ton to do in Mystic, including shopping, great eating, visiting the Mystic Seaport and all of the historic boats, and I will share more on that later. Our home base for the trip, Inn at Mystic, could not have been better. Located just at the edge of town, the inn is perched atop a hill, giving it stunning views of Mystic Harbor and Fischer’s Island Sound.

Everyone at the inn, and everyone in Mystic, in fact, was really friendly and welcoming. It’s a happy little town, and being that it’s so beautiful, it’s easy to see why.

Our room was absolutely lovely. My favorite features included a gigantic Jacuzzi tub and a wood burning fireplace, along with our balcony with beautiful views.

Decor was simple and classic, blues, whites, and browns creating a relaxing and comfortable vibe. The room featured a variety of high end toiletries and a coffee maker, both nice touches. Every little comfort was thought of, and we felt so well taken care of.

The Inn at Mystic’s restaurant Harbour House shares the stunning views that our room had, and offers guests an expansive patio for enjoying food and drink and a bit of sunshine.

Inside the restaurant was equally as sunny and bright. What an inviting space!

The bar had a great cocktail menu, and I had a delicious Manhattan during Happy Hour while we chatted about our day and started to get hungry for dinner.

Our stay generously included dinner at Harbour House, and we stuck with the seafood theme we had kicked off at lunch. Ahi Tuna Tacos were some of the best fish tacos I have ever had. I don’t need to eat fried fish tacos ever again! Everything in the tacos was bursting with flavor, citrus, spice, and an addictive wasabi dipping sauce.

The seafood tower we ordered was the stuff of my dreams. Giant shrimp, lobster, clams, and oysters, all with spicy cocktail sauce and mignonette made for a filling and healthy dinner. It also provided fuel for dancing into the night.

Harbour House was just getting started when we finished dinner, so some Connecticut wine and dancing rounded out our night, all in all a beautiful and really fun experience. The Inn at Mystic went above and beyond and clearly knew the true meaning of hospitality from start to finish. I would return again in a heartbeat; in fact I am trying to convince family and friends to meet us there for a weekend getaway.
