Over the years and many return trips to Sonoma and Napa, we’ve stayed in a variety of fabulous places. From bed and breakfasts to chain hotels, we have found some incredible gems, and I have to say that we’ve been lucky; all of our Napa and Sonoma lodging experiences have been good ones.

On our last trip, as we always do, we went back and forth on which towns to stay in and what types of accommodations we were looking for. Timber Cove Inn was a must-have; it’s literally our little piece of heaven on earth. Healdsburg is also always really hard to pass up. It’s one of my favorite towns, so easy to wander around all evening long, and this time around we decided to splurge a little and stay right on the square at Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza. After a gorgeous drive from Timber Cove and Flowers Vineyard and a fantastic Two Shepherds wine tasting, we pulled up in front of the Inn, happy to be back in one of our favorite places again. Sunshine, 80 degree temperatures, and a growing stash of new wine meant we were in the best moods ever.

Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza

Check in was pleasant and easy, and we were given a quick tour of the inn so that we knew where wine hour and breakfast were. Then it was time to just spend a few minutes enjoying our room. Cozy, sweetly decorated, and overlooking the beautifully green Healdsburg Plaza, our room was a nice place to take a breather. Over the course of the weekend, we enjoyed wine and coffee in armchairs with the breeze blowing through the room, retiring at night for a soak in the giant tub and a fire in the fireplace.

Healdsburg Inn on the PlazaUp a short flight of stairs is the inn’s sun room where, in the evening wine and snacks are served and in the morning, a gourmet breakfast magically appears. Breakfasts are a signature of Four Sisters’ Inns, and they were definitely full of creative, delicious items each day.

Inn on the Plaza, HealdsburgWe only made it to the wine hour on our first night, but we appreciated the beautiful spread that was left out for us to enjoy before we headed for a walk around Healdsburg’s many tasting rooms and live music at Garagiste. Fruit and Cheese Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza

After a long day of appointments and being in the car, a glass of Healdsburg Ranches Chardonnay (unoaked and perfect for Chardonnay haters) was a perfectly refreshing pick-me-up and a segue fro the perfect day to a fabulous evening.

We had an amazing time at Healdsburg Inn, and we would return again in a heartbeat. It was comfortable and luxurious, and the location in Healdsburg just can’t be beat.

I am nearing the end of California recaps; I still have the Barrel Tasting event that we traveled all that way for and a few random tasting room recaps to write, but other than that, I guess it’s time to start planning another trip to Sonoma, right?

Golden Gate Bridge

We’ve stayed at many places in Napa and Sonoma over the years, and since several of you mentioned in the comments that you are planning trips out to wine country, I thought a post on places to stay would be helpful. Of the seven or so places we have stayed, I would recommend all of them, for different reasons and different budgets.

field of mustard

Best Western Dry Creek Inn – On our last trip to Sonoma, we were definitely keeping budget in mind. We also knew that we had a lot of plans to be out and about and would likely not be spending much time in our room. We opted for the Best Western because of its great prices and the fact that it is located within about 15 minutes walking distance of Healdsburg plaza (and places like Barndiva!)

Best Western Healdsburg

Well, we loved the Best Western. We were in the newer Tuscan wing, and our room had a Jacuzzi, super comfy big bed, wifi, and a fireplace. It also included a pretty good breakfast.

We also stayed in a Best Western in Sonoma and were more than pleased with those accommodations. With a TravelZoo deal, our room, with a fireplace and balcony, included breakfast and two massage vouchers for the local Massage Envy, which turned out to be fantastic. Again, a really great deal and a comfy, clean room.

In addition to Sonoma and Healdsburg, we also ventured to the Sonoma Coast and stayed at the Timber Cove Inn, our second time at this magical property.

This year we took advantage of an amazing deal Timber Cove had and scored an ocean facing room with a Jacuzzi that looked out over the Pacific, a balcony, and a fire place. We slept with the screen door slightly open so that the chilly air, pouring rain, and crashing waves lulled us off to slumber. Timber Cove is remote, but it has a fantastic restaurant, cozy with great food and wine.

Timber Cove also has a great room with a huge fire place, perfect for relaxing by before dinner. This inn is a true getaway, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to unplug. (They do have wifi, which did come in handy!)

If you’re looking for something a little more expensive and centrally located to the Russian River Valley, Vintner’s Inn is a great choice.  We stayed there for my 30th birthday, and we especially loved the vineyard views from our room and the extremely comfortable bed. Service was fantastic as well.

And finally, I can’t post about wine country without posting about one of our favorite places ever, Bella Villa Messina. Just look at this house!

Bella Villa Messina

The inn is gorgeous, happy hour includes great local wine and snacks, and the breakfast is legendary. Bella Villa Messina is also a splurge, but it would be my pick for a special occasion vacation.

Bella Villa Messina

Over in Napa, we absolutely love, love, love The Avia. It is comfortable, luxurious, and centrally located within walking distances of places like Bistro Sabor and Zuzu, among others. It’s definitely my first choice if you are venturing over to Napa Valley for the night.

And now I not only want to book a plane ticket to San Francisco, I would now like a giant plate of bacon and a frittata.

What’s the most important part of a vacation for you?

If I had to pick a town to live in anywhere in the US, it would be Healdsburg, CA. From the first time we visited Healdsburg, it has been true love for me, from the surrounding Dry Creek Valley to the laid-back plaza, dotted with massive trees and surrounded by top-notch restaurants and wine tasting rooms.

We’ve eaten at a variety of Healdsburg restaurants, and there are so many for us still to try. This time around, we decided to do the tasting menu at Barndiva.

Located just off the Healdsburg plaza, Barndiva is rustic and elegant, and, in their own words, a celebration of all things local. It’s not difficult to celebrate local ingredients when you are in a place like Healdsburg; Barndiva sources from the variety of farmers, ranchers, and other purveyors that produce food in the region.

Barndiva

We arrived at Barndiva after a short but fabulous stop at a tasting room down the street, Garagiste. With the time change, it was bright for our 6:30 reservation, and we were tempted to sit outside. Later I was glad we didn’t!

I didn’t take notes on the tasting menu as I assumed I would be able to refer back to the pairings online. It was a special date night and one I wanted to remember without worrying too much about blogging, but the light was so good and the food so fantastic, I had to take photos.

One thing I will note is that, when we asked if we could substitute some European wines for California wines, our server was more than accommodating. We wanted to stay true to the local experience, and it made it that much more special to be drinking only California wine.

{Goat Cheese Croquettes with Local Organic Honey and Lavender}

Goat cheese croquettes kicked off our meal, their warm, creamy centers adorned with a pleasant crunchy coating. Sweet honey and fragrant lavender provided a sweet and floral contrast. I love all things lavender, and this pairing was lovely.

dungeness crab

{Dungeness Crab}

It’s Dungeness crab season in Northern California, and we both enjoyed the meaty crab with avocado and crunchy, salty potato chips.

Barndiva, Healdsburg

We lingered over each course, kind of amazed by the amount of sunlight still left outside.

scallops

{Caramelized Diver Scallops}

Our next course offered perfectly caramelized scallops atop a puree that I believe was potato. I cleared this plate in just a couple of minutes, loving the creamy puree and crispy bacon that came with the scallops.

lobster risotto

{Lobster Risotto}

I started to fade at the Lobster Risotto course which was completely unfortunate because it was absolutely amazing. I just couldn’t believe I had two more courses and two more wines to go. The lobster was perfect though, and the risotto so flavorful with nice hints of shellfish brine.

{Herbed Roasted Filet of Beef}

Our final savory course of the evening was beef, and I know this one was paired with a big, bold Cabernet Sauvignon. A couple of bites of the meat and a  few sips of wine was all I could muster. So full.

{Chocolate Bavarois, Lemon Verbena Ice Cream, Cherry}

A rich chocolate dessert paired with Madeira wine (not from California) finished off our tasting menu. The Bavarois had a mousse-like texture beneath a soft chocolate shell. Need I say more?

We were incredibly full by the time dinner was done, and it was nice to go outside to walk around the plaza despite the fact that the temperature, as it often does in Sonoma County, had dropped over 20 degrees since the sun set.

I loved writing this post; it was fun to be able to relive such a memorable night, but I won’t lie, it made me want to be in Healdsburg right now. It’s hard to leave a place that feels so much like home!

Do you have a place that you would rather be living? Or is it just me dreaming about packing up and moving?
