We don’t dine in Newton often, but when having drinks with Lin and Jon in early July, we learned about the soon-to-open Farmstead Table and knew we would have to check it out. Last Thursday we were finally able to make the visit happen.

But first, we stopped by the Beantown Eats headquarters to meet their adorable dog and to have handcrafted cocktails made by Beantown Drinks. Win, win! Their dog is adorable, and each of us got our own, different cocktail. It was better than any bar I’ve visited lately!

After drinks, we made our way to Farmstead Table for a  dinner made of simple, delicious dishes and a server that was fun, attentive, and very knowledgeable with her wine pairings.

Salads and appetizers were ordered to share.

We also ordered the un-photographed Marinated Summer Vegetable Salad.

Our salads and appetizer instantly impressed me. Everything was incredibly fresh, simply prepared to let the natural flavors shine through.

Also impressive was our delightful server Robin. She’s someone we would love to go for a drink with, and we put it in her hands to help us select wine with dinner. Lin and I went with the oakier Chardonnay option (Sometimes oaky Chardonnay is referred to as “Cougar Juice”. . . I guess I am getting older!). The Talley Chardonnay ended up being perfect, with a nice acidity and just a hint of butterscotch and oak.

Our entrees were a big hit. I sampled my husband’s Delmonico steak with potato puree, the steak perfectly cooked and juicy, the puree something I will be craving this winter, velvety, creamy, and filling.

I had the scallop special which included a lobster sauce and local corn. It was the epitome of summer and showed the obvious efforts that Farmstead Table is making in crafting seasonal dishes.

While we were enjoying our entrees, we were reminded that the house-made warm chocolate pudding cake took awhile to make and should be ordered in advance. There was no hesitation that we would share a dessert, and this divine dish was like hot chocolate in cake form. I only wish I had more room to truly indulge in this dessert.

Farmstead Table is a fabulous spot for dinner. The owners are hands-on, the food is local and seasonal, carefully crafted with pride and expertise. Everyone was warm, friendly, welcoming, and hospitable. The menu at Farmstead Table changes very frequently, and I look forward to returning to see what the coming months bring.

Some say summer is over, but I’m happy for the three weeks we have left to enjoy this most magical season. For me, it’s the best time to live in New England, possibly the only time I like living here, so stretching it as long as possible is key.

With my husband off for a week between jobs last week, we decided to make the most of our time and spent the most perfect day on Cape Cod. There’s a reason people come from around the world to Massachusetts to visit our beautiful shores, and I feel ridiculously lucky to live so close.

On this day, the sky couldn’t have been any bluer and the water couldn’t have sparkled any more. With warm days left in the season and fewer tourists, Cape Cod will just get better over the coming weeks. Hopefully we will be able to sneak in one last visit before the chill sets in for what will seem like forever. ..

Chatham, MA

{Chatham Lighthouse Beach}

Our first stop of the day was for a walk on Chatham Lighthouse Beach. We’re glad we visited when we did because many of the beaches have been closed since due to shark activity. Du dun da dun. . . any Jaws fans out there?

Chatham Fish Market

Next up, we visited the Chatham Fish Pier for a lobster roll and some chowder, eaten while looking out on to the harbor and watching the fishing boats come in.

The docks in front of the Chatham Fish Pier were a great place for watching seals who put on quite a show for us. Unfortunately, the explosion in the population of these adorable creatures is the reason for the shark activity. . . I wanted to bring them all home so they would be safe!

After lunch, we decided to grab a glass of wine at the famed, majestic Chatham Bars Inn. From a cozy couch with the above view, I enjoyed a beautiful glass of rosé, an ode to the refreshing pink wines of summer.

A visit to Chatham is certainly not complete without a wander of downtown Chatham. It’s a quaint New England town with some great shops, like a used book store and some to-die-for clothing stores. They’re also fairly pricey but fun to browse around.

{Brax Landing}

On our way out Chatham, we passed by Brax Landing, a restaurant adjacent to a yacht club, and one that boasted a cocktail patio. It was literally the most perfect summer day ever, so we decided to stop for some Sam Summers, oysters, and shrimp.

Craigville Beach

{Craigville Beach}

Our final stop of the day was a nostalgic one for me. When I was younger, my family often vacationed in Centerville, MA, and we spent a lot of that time at Craigville Beach. It’s not a big waves beach, but the water is so clear you can always see the bottom, and the sand is soft and without sharp shells. It was chilly but we both took the plunge and had swimming races for awhile before becoming too cold.

Four Seas Ice Cream

{Four Seas Ice Cream, Centerville, MA}

Our final stop of the day is a must-visit on the Cape, Four Seas Ice Cream in Centerville. We used to stay in the little motel across the street and walk over for ice cream at the end of every night, often bumping into members of the Kennedy family visiting from their Hyannisport compound. On this trip, standing outside eating ice cream as the sun set made me a little emotional; those trips are happy memories I have of my father and of our family in general before we were all grown up. Family vacation is definitely something to savor, no matter what age you are, and the Cape makes for some magical memories.

If you’ve been to Cape Cod, what’s one of your favorite things there?

Being that we’ve loved Ten Tables for years, I was more than a little excited when I found out a grass fed burger place, called Grass Fed, would be opening up in the same block the Jamaica Plain Ten Tables is on. I love JP; my time as a MSPCA volunteer has given me the opportunity to explore the dining scene, Jamaica Pond, the Arboretum, and more.

Earlier this week when we were pondering lunch, Grass Fed popped up in conversation, and we were pleased to find they’re open daily from 11-11.

Grass Fed was not crowded when we arrived around 1:00, and we took a couple of minutes to look around and browse the menu before ordering. The restaurant’s ambiance wasn’t what I expected for some reason. I thought it would be a little more cozy, upscale burger place, but it’s very, very casual, definitely a place I would rather go for lunch than dinner.

They have a great selection of sandwiches and burgers, along with beers and organic wines. Since I had just done a 15 mile run, I was hungry and thirsty and was hoping Grass Fed’s burgers included turkey burgers, despite not seeing them on the menu.

I was wrong. I went up to the counter to ask just in case, and the man at the counter gave me a look and a flat “No.” His answer was the same when I asked if they had seltzer water. Unfortunately, he seemed really disinterested in helping us, so we quickly chose burgers without much more consideration.

Since I was ravenous and neither the chickpea nor the mushroom burger seemed like they would fill me up, I did something I almost never do and went with a beef burger, the Cali:5oz of grassfed beef with avocado, pepper jack cheese, mesclun, shaved red onion & cilantro-lime aioli.

It was good! Despite wanting to leave after dealing with the cranky server, we were glad we stayed when we bit into our burgers. This burger was perfectly cooked and topped with a generous amount of avocado. The onions, cheese, and aioli all made the burger pop with flavor. The fries were hot, crispy, and nicely salted.

My husband had the Blue Devil: 5oz of grass fed beef with Stilton blue cheese, bacon, aioli & crispy fried onions. He demolished it in about two minutes and really enjoyed the tangy blue cheese and crispy bacon and onion strings additions.

image

We dipped our fries in our fair share of Grass Fed’s house made sauces which were also really a delight.

image

We were both satisfied with our burgers, but we agreed we probably wouldn’t visit often. For two burgers and fries, we paid almost $30; considering you order at the counter and bus your own tables, that price seemed a little steep for what we got, even taking into account the grass-fed beef. Maybe if they added a turkey burger to the menu. . .

How’s your week going? Have you eaten anything amazing?
