After a long boat day, easy meals are key. Usually, we end up ordering from Shanti, our favorite Indian restaurant, stopping by Savin Bar + Kitchen, ordering sushi from Van Shabu, or just eating random stuff around the house.

Lately I have been on a mission to eat better and to spend less on takeout that we sometimes don’t even really want. Planning ahead for meals that require a few ingredients and minimal preparation is key. This past weekend, after a long hot day out, I headed home and after a little shower and rest, I put together a pretty spectacular meal, if I do say so myself.

All it took were a couple of beefsteak tomatoes cut into thick slices, a red onion, also cut into thick slices, a handful of gorgonzola cheese, a splash of balsamic from our trip to Eataly, and a good steak from Whole Foods.

Since it was raining, we pulled out the indoor grill pan and threw on the steak, simply seasoned with pepper on both sides. Next up, I grilled the onion, just so that it was a little soft on the outside. I like onions to still have a little bite when cooked.

Finally, I put the tomato on the grill pan for about 30 seconds before taking everything off and assembling stacks of tomato, steak, and onion, topping each with a handful o gorgonzola and a drizzle of balsamic.

This dinner took less than 20 minutes, but it felt like a fancy restaurant meal. Good ingredients, simple preparation, and flavors that go well together all made for a delicious dinner. I love summer.

A couple of years ago, five Boston bloggers who had just started to get to know one another got together for a tomato dinner at Upstairs on the Square in Cambridge. Alicia, Daisy, Megan, Michelle, and I became fast friends over dinner, and tow years later, have had tons of food-related fun together, from a trip to King Arthur Flour, a big potluck, and a bachelorette weekend. Over the last two years, we’ve been through moves, job changes, and lots of wedding planning, and I am definitely glad we all met!

Last week four of us (missing Alicia!) got together for another tomato dinner at Upstairs on the Square, to enjoy some local tomatoes, wine pairings, and most of all, a chance to catch up on our busy lives.

I arrived first and read through the Upstairs on the Square wine and cocktail menus. Both are great, offering lots of variety, including five Champagne cocktails on the cocktail list. Be still, my bubbly loving heart!

Upstairs on the Square is hosting Summer of Riesling with a hilarious kick; they have paired a Riesling with a character from the Golden Girls! I laughed out loud reading about this diverse flight. I love pairing wines with things that aren’t just food, like music, and I thought this was brilliant.

Once we were all at the restaurant, we headed upstairs for dinner. I love, love, love the décor at Upstairs on the Square. Purple and pink and big windows, comfy cushions, and lovely wall sconces all make for a memorable, quirky dining space.

We all went for dinner with the wine pairings. I love how wine can be paired to enhance food, and I also love a surprise in my glass.

Our first course, a green tomato gazpacho, was paired with an old favorite, Bonny Doon Ca’del Solo Albarino. We’ve visited Bonny Doon and even tried to become wine club members before remembering how difficult Massachusetts makes some wine deliveries!

The acidity in the wine paired nicely with the cool tomato soup.

Our second course was definitely my favorite; you can not go wrong with tomato, peach, and lobster salad! Everything about this salad said summer, including the Sybille Kuntz Riesling, with its balance of sweetness and acidity.

Our main course, fire-roasted Berkshire pork, was delicious, but a little too much for me. It came with fresh fennel pollen, and I loved that fennel flavor that coated the meat. The wine pairing, an Occhipinti Frappato from my obsession, Sicily, was perfection. There were some nice strawberry flavors, but the wine had some herbaceous notes as well, which went nicely with the fennel.

Finally, we had dessert, tomato sorbet with candied pine nuts. I loved the pine nuts but found the tomato flavor in the sorbet a little overwhelming. A nice sweet South African wine, de Trafford Straw Wine, balanced out some of that tomato-y flavor. Just a sip goes a long way with a wine like this!

We had a blast at dinner, and the food and service at Upstairs on the Square, pleased, as always. It’s a gorgeous restaurant, and I am looking forward to a return visit to try out their Champagne bar.

I also look forward to eating tons of tomatoes over the next few weeks. Summer is flying by!

As you know, I am a big fan of day trips, road trips, and exploring new towns, mostly for the purpose of eating at new places. There’s usually some sort of other activity in there too, like hiking or wine tasting, but food is often the catalyst.

On Saturday, before we headed to the Hull Harbor Illumination, we traveled to Hingham for an early dinner at the bar at Tosca.  We love taking drives to Hingham to eat at The Lobster Pound and to walk at World’s End (and to dream about having a waterfront house with lots of land and its own deep water dock), and Tosca is an old favorite for a delicious, romantic night out.

Located just a block from the water, Tosca occupies a large, open space with a kitchen that’s front and center. All of my photos of the space had people in them, unfortunately, so you will have to take my word for it. The main dining room is very large while the wine room is cozier, a little darker, and my pick for a date night.

After arriving at Tosca, we read through the lengthy cocktail menu and decided on our first cocktails. I love that Tosca uses locally made spirits in many of their drinks, so I went with the Privateer, made with Privateer rum from Ipswich, MA, and a lemon, thyme, and rosemary syrup.  Tosca Menu

While I wished the rosemary came through a little more, I loved this icy, lemony drink. It was so refreshing!

While we decided on dinner, we were given bread and a lemony chickpea spread that was surrounded by a pool of fruity olive oil.

These crispy, cheesy flatbreads were also placed in front of us and devoured immediately. I must find a way to make these at home for our own cocktail hour.

For my second cocktail, I ordered the Sicilian Orange Soda. This was a dangerously delicious drink that tasted just like orange soda but was made up of Grey Goose orange vodka, aperol, and San Pellegrino Aranciata. Yum.

We started with oysters. If they’re on the menu and local, there’s a good chance we’re getting them. I added some Tabasco from the mini bottle to mine and loved the spice with the brininess.

For dinner we shared the Angry Lobster: (spaghettini, Calabrian chile, crushed tomato, sweet corn) and the Panzanella: (grilled fireking bread, red onion, cucumber, tomato, caciotta cheese & peppadew dressing). Both were absolutely perfect. It was a rainy night, and the Angry Lobster definitely provided a warm and cozy kick. The Panzanella was full of crunchy cucumber, sweet tomatoes, and a tangy cheese. I don’t think I have had caciotta before, but we both really liked it.

Hingham is definitely a fun place to visit in the summer time, but Tosca, with its cozy wine library and wood oven, is a destination year round, definitely a place I think of when I am in the mood for a little getaway close to home.
