I certainly think so! Several weeks back I received an email from the PR firm working on the Life Goes Better with Bordeaux campaign. My first thought, obviously, was what a fun job! My second, yes I would love to sample Bordeaux wine as a part of the campaign.

The samples arrived the day before my marathon travels in January began, and I have not had time to sit down a properly taste/review the wine until now. I have been greatly looking forward to it though!

In addition to a bottle of champagne which I have not yet tasted, I was sent a red Bordeaux from Chateau Larose-Trintaudon from Medoc, France. The 2004 blend was 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot and had a deep purpley color in the glass and on my teeth 🙂 Perhaps the only downside of my penchant for red wine?

We used the new aerator that I received as a Christmas gift to aerate our glasses of wine and then let them breathe for about 20 minutes before taking a sip. The nose on the wine definitely included hints of tobacco and ripe raspberries. The mouth feel of this wine was like silk, very round and smooth with a nice, long finish, and lingering hints of those berries again. I have to say that I have not tasted many wines from Bordeaux, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed this wine. It was very soft, for lack of another term, and lacked any sharp alcoholic or acidic flavor which was very nice. The label noted that it was aged in 100% French oak which made me worry at first that it would have an oakiness to it which this wine did not have at all.  We drank it with a very creamy brie, and the cheese brought the fruit out of it very nicely. I would drink this with cheese again.

The Life Goes Better with Bordeaux campaign’s website is very interesting and helpful for newbies like me who want to learn about wine and wine regions. They also offer information on food and wine pairings and wines in different price ranges. My absolute favorite part of the site, besides the history of Bordeaux was the “Find your Bordeaux Match” section. You can choose a wine that you are familiar with, like a Napa Cabernet, and they suggest a Bordeaux wine that you might like. This is such a helpful tool, and I know that I will be using it again so that I can discover Bordeaux wines with flavor profiles that might be similar to other wines that I enjoy.

Many, many thanks to the Life Goes Better with Bordeaux for the samples and for opening my eyes to a region I have yet to explore. One I pop open the bubbly, I will be writing about that as well. Until then, enjoy the Life Goes Better with Bordeaux website!

More Prague! I hope you all aren’t bored yet! After we left the palace, we saw a snowy embankment that looked like it had a park at the top. Obviously, we had to go and explore, even if that meant scaling the hill in the snow to avoid the icy steps.

walking around Prague

Hill running in Prague- am I the only one who wants to run up every hill I see?

We didn’t get any photos up on the hill. All joking aside, it was pretty treacherous and in hindsight, not the best idea to be treading on ground covered with a foot of snow, especially since we didn’t know the terrain. We almost fell several times, and if we had it would have been a long way down.

We decided to walk along the river before crossing it to get to the beer hall that we were eyeing up for lunch. The views were beautiful.

After crossing the river we encountered the Prague State Opera House.

We had a clear lunch destination in mind, U Fleku,a beer hall that dates back to 1499.

No drink menus here, our server asked if we wanted beers, yes we did, and we were presented with two mugs of dark beer.

Our server also offered us shots of Becherkova, a Czech liquer that is used as an aperitif. We declined, but I really wish I had tried it.

Since we were both FREEZING, we started with soup. I ordered the garlic soup which had a hot, tangy broth and an abundance of delicious croutons floating in its lovely garlicky-ness. It reminded me a lot of the Sopa de ajo blanco that I made for the Nature’s Pride contest.

We also ordered warm cabbage salad, beer cheese with butter and onions, and speck dumplings. Holy hearty meals! Everything was really inexpensive, and I think we expected the portions to be tiny which they were not.

lunch in Prague

Beer cheese is interesting. . . in a VERY strongly flavored, dense, thick sort of way. Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but it was cheese topped with butter served with a hearty bread. I was full after a couple of bites!

After lunch and a bit more walking, we were feeling cold and sleepy, so we returned to our beautiful hotel/apartment where I had the best nap of my life. I am not a napper, but laying on the comfy couches watching German reality TV while the hubs translated for me, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. What a completely refreshing day!

Phew. . . feels good to have the Monday after a holiday over with, doesn’t it? I had a great day! It started with a good workout and ended up being a quiet work day listening to Christmas music and getting a lot done. I am grateful for good work days. After work, the weather was raw and rainy, and I wanted something warm and comforting. Polenta was the perfect choice. I decided to make it with toasted walnuts, gorgonzola cheese, and roasted garlic. Ingredients 1 tube of organic polenta 1/2 cup to 1 cup crumbled gorgonzola 5 cloves of roasted garlic (roast in skins at 400 until soft and easily squeezed from skin) 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, toasted in a dry skillet image image image image image gorgonzola I cut the polenta into discs and placed them in a pan of sizzling olive oil, then seasoned with ground black pepper.

My plan was to neatly top each disc with crumbled cheese, sliced roasted garlic, and walnuts, but that fell apart quickly. It didn’t look very pretty, but it tasted good!

I served this over a bed of romaine lettuce which, though I bought it only yesterday, is rapidly going bad. I don’t know if the lettuce was the perfect pairing for the polenta, but I hate wasting and wanted to use it up. It ended up tasting good and providing a nice crunch.

The mix of polenta, lettuce, and walnuts makes for a constant change in textures, and the gorgonzola and roasted garlic provide strong but complementary flavors. Polenta is another one of those ingredients that is extremely versatile and it sort of feels like a luxurious treat but only costs $2.99 for the entire tube. Next up, making my own polenta. . . but maybe not this week.
