Share our Strength once again held its epic food, wine, beer, and cocktail event last week in Boston. Taste of the Nation is one of the best events of the year, and I was fortunate to be invited as press to experience all of the fun with some of my favorite Boston bloggers.

Share our Strength

First, and most importantly, there was a message and a pledge for the evening.

I believe that no child in America should go hungry. By pledging today, I add my voice to the national movement of people committed to ending childhood hunger in America by 2015.

You can take the pledge here. It’s kind of amazing and horrible, when you stop and think about it for even a second, that with all of the advances we have made in so many areas, we’re still allowing children to go hungry. So many problems start with hunger and lack of access to food, and Share our Strength is doing amazing work to fix these problems. In addition to Taste of the Nation, they have all sorts of other initiatives like Cooking Matters and The Great American Bake Sale.

No Kid Hungry

As soon as the doors opened for the VIP hour, we made our way into the convention hall and started eating. There was just so much good food. Here are a few of the highlights for me:

Del Frisco's

As you can see, Taste of the Nation was delicious. I definitely ate more than pictured, and there were many, many tables I had to skip due to being full.  It is an event that is very well run and must take a ton of work to put together. The best of the best in the Boston area all come out and lovingly share some of their favorites all to benefit great kids who really need all of our help.

Happy Friday! How’s your day going so far? Did you have a good week? I’m happy to say that this week was significantly better than last week. I had a lot of fun work projects and a fun night out with a friend. I also discovered a Yoga station on Pandora which has allowed me to spend some time practicing yoga on my own and keeping calm while getting these muscles ready for the marathon.

My major gripe this week is people who just don’t respond to emails, especially after I’ve taken the time to write a lot of helpful information. Ignoring emails seems to be a growing trend, and I don’t like it.

Bistro Sabor

But I’m not here to gripe, I am here to share with you one of our favorite places to eat in Napa, Bistro Sabor. Located in the heart of the town of Napa, Bistro Sabor serves contemporary street-style Latin American food, has Happy Hour with great beer and wine options, and even offers Salsa dancing on Saturday nights. It’s an inexpensive, delicious, must-visit for us when we are in Napa.

Bistro Sabor was our first dinner on our last wine country trip. I was actually in the mood for a beer, and since I love their beer and pit bull logo, I had a Lagunitas IPA.

As always, we decided to share a couple of plates, the tamales of the day which were filled with pork and resting in a spicy habanero sauce, paired with beans and pico de gallo.

We also had the Dungeness crab quesadilla with cream cheese, salsa verde and pineapple salsa. Amazing. These were seriously stuffed with crab and cream cheese, kind of like crab rangoon only 100 times better because they were paired with the freshness of the salsa.

After a leisurely dinner, we walked down the street for a Passaggio wine tasting event at Quent Cordair Fine Art Gallery. We met the winemaker from Passaggio the last time we were in California, and as she is great and we love her wines, we were excited that our trip coincided with this event.

We got to taste her delicious unoaked Chardonnay; trust me, if you think you don’t like Chardonnay, I can almost guarantee you will like this! We also tasted a beautiful Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Noir. I wish this wine club shipped to Massachusetts, because I would join in a heartbeat!

I’m working a half day today, and then we are headed to see my family for the weekend. This week has been go-go-go, and I am super hyper because of the marathon, so it will be nice to unwind with family for Easter.

Who’s ready for Friday?! I most definitely am. Generally right now I am just ready for a day when I don’t have a fever or major congestion, but that aside, I am excited about the weekend.

It’s my birthday month and one of my favorites of the whole year because I feel it is full of renewal. For more on that and a pretty picture, please check out my post on welcoming March from last year. The month is certainly coming in like a lion!

Tomorrow I hope to get through a 20 mile training run before heading to a very local bar for my cousin’s husband’s birthday. Saturday I am looking forward to a pajama day with some work, taxes, and movies thrown in, and Sunday I will be mixing up cocktails with Jackson Cannon at The Urban Grape. Not too shabby.

Mostly I want time to pass so that it’s next Friday and I can be on a plane to my beloved San Francisco and on to Sonoma. Sonoma helps me to recharge like no other place. It’s magic, and my trip happens to coincide with the visit of some lovely ladies.

Until then, we’re working and loving life right here in Dorchester and taking advantage of some of the great, delicious deals to be had.

Mayflower

Last night, as I was a self-described shut in (working from home gets to the best of us), my husband took me to The Ledge for their dollar oyster night. The Ledge is another fine Dorchester establishment with great food, drinks, and a beautiful, secluded patio.

We each indulged in a Mayflower Porter and shared a dozen Wellfleet oysters which are just a dollar each during The Ledge’s Wednesday Oyster Happy Hour.

These oysters were delightful and briny. The beers were malty and toasty, but I might stick with my standard Guinness and oyster combo next time. It can’t be beat.

I also had the fish and chips, always good at The Ledge, but I really wanted clam chowder and didn’t go with that. Later on I still wanted clam chowder and regretted it. Not a big deal, but I have to remember to get what I want because I usually know exactly what that is.

How is your week going so far? Do you usually go with your gut when it comes to ordering at restaurants, or do you sometimes second-guess your choice, even if it’s really good?
