Tasting Room Series

Happy Friday! How’s your day going so far? Did you have a good week? I’m happy to say that this week was significantly better than last week. I had a lot of fun work projects and a fun night out with a friend. I also discovered a Yoga station on Pandora which has allowed me to spend some time practicing yoga on my own and keeping calm while getting these muscles ready for the marathon.

My major gripe this week is people who just don’t respond to emails, especially after I’ve taken the time to write a lot of helpful information. Ignoring emails seems to be a growing trend, and I don’t like it.

Bistro Sabor

But I’m not here to gripe, I am here to share with you one of our favorite places to eat in Napa, Bistro Sabor. Located in the heart of the town of Napa, Bistro Sabor serves contemporary street-style Latin American food, has Happy Hour with great beer and wine options, and even offers Salsa dancing on Saturday nights. It’s an inexpensive, delicious, must-visit for us when we are in Napa.

Bistro Sabor was our first dinner on our last wine country trip. I was actually in the mood for a beer, and since I love their beer and pit bull logo, I had a Lagunitas IPA.

Lagunitas

As always, we decided to share a couple of plates, the tamales of the day which were filled with pork and resting in a spicy habanero sauce, paired with beans and pico de gallo.

We also had the Dungeness crab quesadilla with cream cheese, salsa verde and pineapple salsa. Amazing. These were seriously stuffed with crab and cream cheese, kind of like crab rangoon only 100 times better because they were paired with the freshness of the salsa.

After a leisurely dinner, we walked down the street for a Passaggio wine tasting event at Quent Cordair Fine Art Gallery. We met the winemaker from Passaggio the last time we were in California, and as she is great and we love her wines, we were excited that our trip coincided with this event.

We got to taste her delicious unoaked Chardonnay; trust me, if you think you don’t like Chardonnay, I can almost guarantee you will like this! We also tasted a beautiful Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Noir. I wish this wine club shipped to Massachusetts, because I would join in a heartbeat!

I’m working a half day today, and then we are headed to see my family for the weekend. This week has been go-go-go, and I am super hyper because of the marathon, so it will be nice to unwind with family for Easter.

What are you up to this weekend?

We’re famous! Well, kind of. While I was actually working on this post, I was alerted on Facebook that the San Francisco Chronicle had been at Ma(i)sonry in Yountville the same day that we were there, and we were the people enjoying wine in the sculpture garden! If you look closely at this picture, you can see me looking at my phone. Probably tweeting.

We arrived at Ma(i)sonry with the intention of making a tasting appointment for later in the afternoon. But when we were met at the door with glasses of  Marsanne, we knew we were there to stay.

Blogging has afforded me many wonderful opportunities, but, as I say time and again, the people I have met are the absolute best part. On this tasting day, we happened to be traveling with a Napa Valley local who shared with us her insights on wine and places to visit, which is what brought us to Ma(i)sonry in the first place. Her knowledge of their wine collective made our tasting so special. It was a fun group, and I was fortunate to be brought along with them!

Ma(i)sonry is a stone building across from Yountville’s most famous property, The French Laundry. It is a winery collective, meaning that it pours wine from a variety of wineries and serves as their tasting room. That makes for a great chance to taste wines from many winemakers without leaving your comfortable seat in the sun.

image  Ma(i)sonry isn’t just a tasting room though, it is truly an experience. The building and outdoor areas also serve as art galleries. Guests are welcome to come in to admire the beautiful and interesting art, to taste wine, to relax with a glass of wine, at the pace they choose. Just make an appointment first!

The collection of art is eclectic, from paintings to books to furniture and sculptures, and while the inside of Ma(i)sonry is impressive, on a March day that was in the mid-70’s, we were most interested in the outside. The fact that there were some exquisite wines being poured helped that a little. Winking smile

We received some fantastic hospitality at Ma(i)sonry from start to finish, and our tasting was really memorable because it was so comfortable. We were seated around an outdoor fire with options for sitting under trees or umbrellas or in the sun. I started in the sun but didn’t last very long! A little bit of shade goes a very long way for this New Englander.

Ma(i)sonry has many tasting options, and we decided to share a couple of their Blackbird Vineyards flights to start. Two tastings shared amongst five people was more than enough, and by the end of the tasting, most of us were club members. Several bottles of the Blackbird Arriviste Rosé also made it into our shipping box, and a nicely chilled bottle came along to lunch at Farmstead. More on that later!

During our leisurely tasting, we snacked on some local cheese, nuts, and crackers. Everything was delicious and of the best quality.

There was more wine, more chatting, and more wine-buying as the afternoon ticked on. I wanted to stay forever, soaking up the Napa Valley sun, blue skies, and mostly the way of life.

We finished our time at Ma(i)sonry with a cool, light dessert wine, I believe it was a late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. Again, I was a good vacationer and a bad food/wine blogger. I know that I liked it!

Everyone at Ma(i)sonry is treated like a VIP; their sprawling garden area and private tasting rooms ensure the best hospitality and service, and the staff was wonderful with their knowledge of wine, the pacing of the tastings, and the warmth that started with our welcome and lingered throughout. One of the reasons we became club members was definitely the welcoming and special environment of the place; it’s not any old tasting room, that’s for sure! We look forward to visiting again and again , and I would definitely recommend Ma(i)sonry to anyone visiting Napa Valley. Maybe someday I will be able to drive over to Yountville to pick up my wine club wine.

It’s Wine Wednesday! Do you have any special plans for tonight?

Ahhh summer vacation memories. In going through old posts, trying to find a post about a particular wine, I realized that I never posted about our dinner at Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg, CA. Or maybe I did, but I can’t find it anywhere. . .

So to warm myself up and to pump myself up for the March 6 Napa Marathon and following vacation in Napa and Sonoma, I thought I would share a few photos from a delicious summer dinner.

Dry Creek Kitchen

Dry Creek Kitchen is just one of the many restaurants owned by Chef Charlie Palmer. Sitting proudly on Healdsburg Plaza, it is light, airy, and open with extensive outdoor seating and a beautiful outdoor courtyard. These photos are from our July trip to Healdsburg, but in this same spot on our March trip, I met Kevin from Top Chef Winking smile while he was setting up for Palmer’s Pigs and Pinot event.

Prior to our arrival at Dry Creek Kitchen, we were informed by our wonderful innkeeper at Bella Villa Messina that Dry Creek Kitchen allowed you to BYOB, and if the bottle was a Sonoma wine, there is no corkage fee! We decided on a bottle of J Cuvee bubbly, one that quickly became a favorite sparkling wine of mine (check out this post on Bubbles for your Budget!).

Upon arrival, we received some beautiful bread sticks and an amuse bouche, a shot of flavorful soup in a cute little espresso cup.

For my starter, I ordered roasted corn soup topped with a black truffle flan. Can you even imagine? The flavors of summer in California captured so beautifully in a bowl with black truffle flan. . .

For more summer beauty, my main dish was an artichoke ravioli with shrimp, drizzled with a light cream sauce. Like everything at Dry Creek kitchen, this plate was like art, presented beautifully on a long, narrow white plate.

The best part about the food at Dry Creek Kitchen was that the portions were perfectly sized and satisfying but not so stuffing that we could not have dessert. I don’t recall the exact name, but this was sort of an adult s’mores with rich chocolate cake topped with sea salt on a toasted marshmallow cream bed. Again, the perfect portion, especially for sharing.

And if all of that wasn’t enough deliciousness, with the bill we were presented a little tray of sweets. I only took a bite of one of the little jelly squares as I was completely full by this point.

Dry Creek Kitchen is not my favorite restaurant in Healdsburg (I save that designation for Scopa and Willi’s, I think because they are cozier and more intimate.), but it is definitely a beautiful dining experience. I would absolutely return for the fantastic service and food that is beautiful on the plate and on the palate.

Is winter getting you down? What is a favorite summer or vacation dining memory you can share to warm us all up?
