Despite the miserable winter cold and snow, I have been making my rounds in Boston and Cambridge, checking out restaurants and bars new and old, spending time with friends and family. The camera has been mostly tucked away in my bag, allowing me to enjoy every sip, bite, and conversation, but that definitely doesn’t mean I made it out without any photos.

There was a birthday celebration for my father-in-law at our local pub, The Banshee, complete with pints of Guinness and Georgetown Cupcake’s festive holiday treats. It was the night of the surprise blizzard, yet everyone we invited still made it, and we went to the week hours of the morning.

Then there were belated birthday drinks for two of my closest friends, a stop at Harvard Square’s Park for a drink followed by a visit to Noir for a Seelbach and bar bites. I made my inaugural visit to Belly Wine Bar, my quest for a cozy Boston area wine bar mostly satisfied. (I still long for a wine bar like this one though.)

We toasted to Summer’s inevitable arrival with a bottle of Chateau Coupe Roses  rosé, snacked on fried chickpeas, and I made a note to return for wine at Belly and a Blue Room dinner; the last one was pretty phenomenal.

Finally, there was a fun night out with friends (who happen to have a cool blog redesign) for whisky and women at the Urban Grape. Who doesn’t love chatting with a fun group of ladies, learning about whisky cocktails, and tasting yummy Macallan?

Followed up with dinner at nearby Coda, where Lin and I had our fill of our obsession, deviled eggs.

We may have also ordered a full order of ribs with sides as an appetizer, prior to our entrees, but that might be a story for another day. Sometimes you just need a big plate of comfort food to kick off a meal. . .

There have also been a few undocumented visits to Steel and Rye, our new regular hangout. After our first visit, I was smitten, and it has been amazing every single time since.

Boston is seriously bustling with wining and dining activity; I can hardly keep up. Hopefully patio weather will be here soon, but in the meantime, I’ll be out in my boots with the (fake) fur, enjoying all the city has to offer.

Even back when I was a vegetarian, I loved going to steakhouses. We spent my husband’s 30th birthday at Morton’s, and I’ve always been a fan of stopping at Smith & Wollensky, Ruth’s Chris, or the like for cocktails and sides. I love leather banquettes, dark wood, strong cocktails, and great service. So when I started working in the South End this past December, I also started counting down the days until Boston Chops’ opening. Every day on my way to the office, I would see workers coming in and out, and I would tweet at Chef/Owner Chris Coombs to check in on the opening. Maybe too often.

We’ve been fans of Coombs since before we moved to Dorchester seven years ago; really his dbar, a favorite to this day, was one of the signs that we should move to Dorchester. He never steered us wrong. dbar continues to be a date night and brunch  favorite; it’s always just so good and such a happy, fun place. Then came Deuxave, another favorite for food and wine perfection. Clearly with such a track record, Coombs’ Boston Chops would be nothing short of amazing.

And it is; even on day two everything was perfect. Dangerously located less than a block from my office on Washington Street in the South End, Boston Chops has it all, from an old school chic yet relaxed vibe to strong cocktails to a real variety of food options all in the old steakhouse style but with some modern twists.

We kicked our visit to Boston Chops off at the bar where I ordered an Old Town, consisting of rye, fig, and black walnut. The nuttiness of the black walnut came through in this very strong yet balanced cocktail, the perfect way to end a work day.

After a short while, we decided to get a table and were each brought popovers in measuring cups. The popovers are divine – light yet rich, airy, warm and buttery.

The menu at Boston Chops offers a real variety of salads, starters, and sides, in addition to steaks and other entrees, and we were definitely in the mood for sampling. We shared a grand seafood platter which easily could have fed us for dinner with its oysters, clams, mussels, shrimp, and lobster.

One of the sides that caught my eye instantly was the mac and cheese with pork belly. Sorry, former vegetarian self. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, surrounded by an entrée-sized portion of cheesy macaroni. Leftovers will be enjoyed for lunch.

The one entrée we could agree on was the short rib with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The short rib was so tender it could be cut with a spoon, and it was full of flavor and richness. The mashed potatoes were buttery and perfect, and the vegetables on the side provided a nice, fresh element to the meal.

The Brussels Sprouts au Canard were our other must-have. I don’t think I can be in a restaurant with Brussels sprouts without ordering them. I think you can probably tell how good these Brussels were just from the photo. Bonus points for all of the Staub cookware.

True to form, we debated skipping dessert, but I wanted to at least see the menu, the restaurant being new and all. A hazelnut tart called out to our stuffed bellies, and we somehow finished off this chocolate-y treat but just barely. When you visit Boston Chops, be prepared to walk around for awhile after. It might be one of those stick-to-your-ribs sort of meals. Or you could order some fresh seafood and a salad and stay on the light side; that’s one of the best parts about a restaurant like this.

Two other steakhouse favorites are service and wine. Boston Chops’ service was impeccably attentive, professional yet warm. We loved the high-backed booth that closed us off from other diners as well as the space our server gave us to peruse the menu and wine list. The wines by the glass list offered a great selection of grape varieties, regions, and price points while a gorgeous walk-in wine cellar at the front of the restaurant made me dream of our someday wine setup at home.

From the beautiful, classic décor to the expertly crafted menu, to fantastic food and wine, down to every second of service, Boston Chops delighted us and quickly became a new favorite, just as I expected it would.

It’s often said that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and when it comes to my home state, it’s definitely true. New Jersey gets a bad rap for all sorts of things, something I never really got when living there. We have beautiful beaches, mountains, farms, and access to New York City. I always thought it was just fine. But the more time I spend away, the more I want to visit. That definitely is mostly because of my family which has grown over the years to include my two favorite little people on the planet. I don’t think I would want to live there again, but I sure do like to visit.

My work schedule for the month of July and August this year is slow. There are exciting things on the horizon for Autumn, but for now, I have a little bit of time on my hands. Knowing that will change, I decided to spend this week working half days from my mom’s, spending the rest of the day making time for family.

When in New Jersey. . . you obviously have to hit up the Jersey Shore. Before the show, the shore was just a place I went my whole life. Since watching the show, I now pay more attention to my surroundings. There were lots of Snooki’s favorite “juiceheads” aka, super tan, super big and built, guys there this week.

The Jersey Shore holds fond memories for me from early ages, visits to Stone Harbor and Sandy Hook with my mom and later with friends. Prom weekend trips to Seaside Heights and Wildwood, and later nights out on the boardwalk, followed by dancing at Tradewinds, Jenkinson’s, and the Tiki Bar.

Pizza in New Jersey is just better than anything I have eaten in Boston. At Joey Tomatoes, I went with the cheese-less option, nicely topped with a thick tomato paste.

And a trip to the Point Pleasant Aquarium is a cool, dark escape from the boardwalk, fun for kids and adults.

New Jersey also offers lots of beautiful lakes and ponds. One day brought us to Spruce Run Recreation Area for lake swimming.

When in New Jersey, you should check out some of the pretty green spaces and swimming holes. There are lots of them.

When in New Jersey, I also really, really love local produce. We have the best in sweet corn, blueberries, and tomatoes, and I enjoyed those at my mom’s, plus a delicious heirloom tomato Caprese salad at Stage House Tavern.

Stage House Tavern is a new favorite of mine, and this pork tenderloin with figs, bacon, gorgonzola, and veggies was divine. A little too autumnal for my current summery tastes, but still. . .

I’m incredibly lucky that I get to work from wherever right now. I adore my family, and this week has been a lot of fun.

This weekend, I am going wine tasting in Long Island with my husband, his sister, and her boyfriend. My travel bug is definitely quieted this week. Smile
