As we prepare for Ireland travel adventures and seriously discuss a VERY exciting winter trip, I guess it’s time to wrap up my writing about our last Sonoma County trip. Sure, there will be Wine of the Week posts featuring Sonoma wines we brought back, but I am just about out of photos and stories to share. It must be time to go back.

Our last day in Healdsburg was a sad one, as it always is. We checked out of our rental house and then wandered around trying to decide what to do until our red eye flight from Oakland. Wine tasting was on the cards, of course.

We passed by Longboard Vineyards several times throughout this trip and past Healdsburg visits but never made it inside. A leisurely last day in wine country seemed like the perfect time, and we were glad we stopped in this bright, fun tasting room.

Owner and winemaker Oded Shakked traveled and surfed around the world after surfing from a young age in his native Israel, and the tasting room decor, which includes vintage surfboards all over, reflects that passion.

Shakked brings his surfing passion together with wine in Longboard Vineyards, and while the vibe is laid back, the wine is seriously good stuff.

We arrived at the tasting room’s opening since we wanted to make the most of our last day. As a result we had the tasting room to ourselves and had a fun time tasting with our lovely hostess.

We decided to share a tasting (always a great option), and went through the list.  Favorites included their 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, which made the trip home with us. Tart, fresh, with nice acid, notes of pineapple and grapefruit, and ever-present minerality, this wine is summery and refreshing, perfect with a grilled seafood feast.

Mavericks Red Blend

We also loved the Mavericks Red Blend (killer label) for its deep, dark fruit flavors and luxurious weight. This wine is a big one, but it still worked on the warm day that we were tasting on.

Longboard’s Rochioli Chardonnay is also a memorable wine, with baked apple and honey notes and a light hint of vanilla, an easy Chardonnay that has enough depth to keep it interesting. Lovely.

We loved all of the wines we tasted at Longboard, and we felt so welcome. It’s a wine club we are definitely considering joining once we figure out what our next year looks like. And there you have it, our magical Sonoma and Napa trip is wrapped up. It’s one I will never forget; our travels were full of good food, wine, people, and time outdoors, great weather, and relaxation. As I sit here finishing this post, I am longing to be canoeing on Russian River again in the August heat, that’s for sure!

This winery is a beautiful, incredible must-visit. Several people we have met along the way on our Sonoma County trips have mentioned Truett Hurst to us, and while we spend a lot of time in the Dry Creek Valley, we somehow never made it to Truett Hurst until our April travels.

We started our Sunday with a beautiful breakfast at the Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza; really, their breakfast and wine hour are reasons enough to stay there!  After an early morning wander around Healdsburg in glorious, warm sunshine, we stopped briefly at Mauritson for some Zinfandel tasting (and walked away with a beautiful Rockpile Rosé instead) where Truett Hurst was recommended yet again. It turned out to be the most perfect property to spend a sunny wine country day; we pretty much arrived and didn’t leave for hours.

The tasting room at Truett Hurst is in a cute little house and is rustic and very sweet. One of the big perks, in addition to some delicious wines, is that they have a refrigerator full of picnic items at great prices.

We were poured our first taste and encouraged to take our wine and wander the grounds. The sky was a perfect blue, and it was about 80 degrees; you didn’t have to twist my arm to go for a walk with my splash of Truett Hurst Sauvignon Blanc.

Truett Hurst WineryThe tasting room is situated on a big parcel of land nestled up against a river that’s full of steelhead trout. We watched them swimming against the current, while I fought urges to stick my feet in the river. Since it’s an important habitat, swimming and wading are not allowed.

Gardens full of beautiful flowers and trees lead the way out to the river, where a number of tables and Adirondack chairs are set up for visitors to enjoy.

Perfect blue skies add the only decoration needed. This day was so beautiful, it hardly feels real now.

After a little wander, we returned to the tasting room to taste through Truett Hurst’s wine offerings.

All of the wines were fantastic, but standouts included the Sauvignon Blanc, Salmon Run Rosé, and the peppery, absolutely amazing Red Rooster Zinfandel. We were spoiled with these wines, the hospitality, and surroundings at Truett Hurst. Sigh.

Truett Hurst sells their wines by the glass so you can have a little more of your favorite/s. We decided we never wanted to leave this winery, so we grabbed some wine,  meat and Cowgirl Creamery cheese, the winery gave us some crackers, napkins, and utensils, and we stretched out by the river for the rest of the afternoon. It. was.perfect.

I could definitely get used to spending my Sundays like this. Have I mentioned I can’t wait to go back?

The second part of the fantastic day spent exploring Massachusetts food and wine was the main event, a celebration of the expansion of the trail and the addition of new farms and wineries. The kickoff event came at the perfect time for me to share with all of you; fall would be ideal for visiting some of these farms and wineries and taking in the splendor of New England foliage. We arrived at Hardwick Vineyard and Winery, checked in and started checking out the many tasting tables set up. Hardwick Vineyard and Winery is an absolutely beautiful property with a rustic inside, an expansive deck and stunning views. Vendors were set up inside and on the deck leaving lots of space for tasting, taking photos, and networking. I happen to love when events are set up with a good flow, and this one was nicely done.

This event also demonstrated something I love about farming culture; businesses support one another; if one does well and brings exposure to the wine and cheese trail, they all can benefit. Many people still have not tried Massachusetts wine, and I highly recommend getting out there and doing so. If you read this blog, you know I am a fan of a few Coastal Wine Trail vineyards, especially Travessia. Wine made in Massachusetts is not always made from locally grown grapes, especially reds, but several of the winemakers we met were using grapes they had grown while others were in the process of starting vineyards for future wine.

Many of the wines we tasted were made from grapes you may not have heard of, blends that included Cayuga white, Concord, Marechal Foch, Chambourcin, and Frontenac. I noticed throughout the tastings the focus being less on the grape and more on the terroir and blend, as it often is in Europe. These wines are different, but many of them are really good as long as you aren’t expecting them to be something they are not.

And luckily for  us, there were plenty of different wines to taste. Along with Governor Patrick, we made our way through all of the tables.

So many tastes and conversations happened throughout the afternoon. Below are just a few of the highlights.

Amherst Farm chocolate raspberry wine paired with Chocolate Raspberry Diva Black Cocoa Hangover Cake provided a sweet, rich treat that would be the perfect winter evening indulgence.

Berkshire Blue blue cheese – I returned to the Berkshire Blue table multiple times to grab bites of this tangy, delicious handmade cheese made from the unpasteurized milk of Jersey cows. Berkshire Blue is available in several states in the US.

Eastleigh Farm cheese, especially the honey lavender, was amazing.  I liked it so much they gave me a container to take home. Eastleigh Farm is located in Framingham, a very short drive from Boston. The woman I spoke with said that they are planning on events for the public, including a “meet the calves” event.

Ruggles Hill Creamery – After our tour, Tricia from Ruggles Hill went over to Hardwick Vineyards to set up her own tasting table. She kindly made me a little snack with a piece of baguette, salami, apricot jam and an ashed goat cheese, the perfect combination of salty, sweet, and creamy.

Mount Warner Vineyards, located in Hadley, Massachusetts, next to Amherst, my UMASS home, left me feeling nostalgic for my days in the Pioneer Valley.  I loved speaking with the owners of this winery about their wine, UMASS, and the Valley. I also really liked their Hampshire White.

Hardwick Vineyards wine – Our hosts for the day had several really outstanding wines open on their tasting bar including their crisp Giles E. Warner dry white and their “summer in a bottle” Yankee Girl Blush.

Black Birch Vineyard was a favorite of the entire group I was with, from their beautifully designed labels to some stellar wines to the warmth and knowledge of the winemakers. The fact that they met at UMASS didn’t hurt either.  What can I say? I loved my time there! I also really loved the Black Birch Riesling and a red I tried, I believe it was the Frontenac, that had a peppery finish that lasted for several minutes.

Rose 32 Bread provided us with apple squares to pair with the goat cheese during our visit to Ruggles Hill Creamery, and they had a table of delicious treats set up at the grand tasting at Hardwick Vineyards.

Dora the Donkey

Hardwick Vineyards’ resident donkey provided us with entertainment as the afternoon wrapped up before we headed back to Boston with gift bags, complete with wine, in hand.

Meeting some of the great people who are hard at work in various areas of Massachusetts agriculture was inspiring. They are stewards of the land, artisans, scientists, hospitality professionals, and more. I hope with the expansion of the wine and cheese trail their work and products receive more recognition from around the state and around the world.
