Happy birthday season to my wonderful hub! His real birthday is Sunday, but since we will be out and about allllll day, I took him for his special birthday dinner tonight. He chose Smith & Wollensky for his special night, and it was absolutely fabulous. Smith & Wollensky is located in a castle-like building that was built in 1891, and from the outside and inside is spectacular.

We had drinks at the bar before being seated for our reservation. I had a perfect lemon drop cocktail. I really wanted a nice cold drink, and this was it. Sometimes lemon drops taste waaaay too much like vodka, but this had a lovely sugar rim and a lemony, fresh flavor.

When we were seated at our table, they brought a gorgeous rosemary and sea salt bread with butter and menus in old photo frames! It was really neat. I ordered the seared scallops with a chili sauce on the side. We also shared a wedge salad. I love me some blue cheese and iceberg lettuce once in awhile. We also split a half bottle of Calera Pinot Noir. I am loving Pinots lately and really am looking forward to our CA trip. I drank some awesome Pinots in Oregon last summer ( Erath!) and they are definitely my favorite wines.

The food was delicious. The lettuce was so crisp and refreshing and the blue cheese was garlicky and homemade. My scallops were perfectly sweet. That is one thing I love about scallops; they don’t need anything at all. Their natural flavor just shines through!

For dessert, they brought a surprise cake for the hub, which we shared, along with some Taylor Fladgate port.

All in all, this was a spectacular experience, from the minute we were greeted until we left. The service was truly impeccable, the food was superior quality, delicious, and perfectly filling, and it was just a great special occasion spot.
I had more posting planned for today on my lunch salad and disappointing Odwalla bar, but I will save that for another day. Smith & Wollensky has restaurants in several cities around the US, and I would absolutely recommend them for a really special dinner.
I am SO excited to celebrate my hub’s birthday this weekend, and I am working from home tomorrow. . . wooohoo! I hope you are all as happy as I am right now! Buenas noches 🙂

Happy 4th of July! It is  only 6:30, but we have had a jam-packed day. It started out with an awesome Green Monster: spinach, chocolate soy milk, Amazing Grass Chocolate SuperFood, black cherries, and ice.

Then, I decided to go to the MSPCA to walk some more dogs:

After that we walked the 4 miles or so to the Boston waterfront. It is a GORGEOUS sunny day here in Boston!

We walked alllll the way along the harbor, drank about a gallon of water each, and then made our way to Battery Wharf for lunch at Sensing.

For lunch I ordered the Golden tomato and mango gazpacho, ricotta wasabi raita and a Peak Organic Nut Brown Ale. The hub ordered the lobster roll with fries. . . mmmmm.

Our meal was light and delicious. The lobster was on an incredible brioche roll, and the seasoned french fries were seriously just what I wanted. The very smooth, chilled gazpacho tasted like sweet sunshine with a little wasabi dumpling in the middle. Whoever thought of these flavors is just genius. The patio was nearly empty which is unfortunate because it was just gorgeous, tucked away and right on the water. Sensing’s dinner menu looks excellent, and the service was impeccably elegant so I hope to return soon.

I got waaaaay too much sun today. Going without it for so long made me a little silly and I omitted the sunscreen from my day. We are home now, cooking up a TJ’s pizza and chilling a bottle of our Sakonnet Vidal Blanc. I am so glad we did not make any plans for tonight. I sort of felt bad earlier that we decided to spend the day together, skipping the traditional bbq’s and fireworks that I felt like I “had” to go to. Now, I am tired and sunburned and happy to be home with my hub. Family bbq tomorrow and getting back into the work swing of things, so for tonight, I will be curling up with the a/c on and relaxing big time! Have a safe and fantastic fourth all!

Morning everyone! I am so groggy today, and it looks like it is about to rain AGAIN here in Boston! I have some errands today and hope to pop by Bin Ends for their Fine Wine Flea Market later today. I just wanted to remind all of my Boston readers that Icarus is closing its doors this week after 31 years! I have been to most South End restaurants and have sadly never gotten to Icarus – but I will on Thursday, their second to last night ever! I am very excited, and there are still reservations available for this week if you would like to take part in their Swan Song $31 Pri fixe menu to celebrate 31 fabulous years.

And if you like Icarus, don’t forget to check out two more Chris Douglass establishments, some of my local faves Ashmont Grill and Tavolo. I love Tavolo’s website opener: Good food is everything! 🙂
