Happy 5th anniversary to my husband! I know it sounds cliché, but I truly can not believe how the time has flown by since that beautiful Friday night on Boston Harbor where we were married in front of our closest friends and family. Five years later, I still love everything about our wedding and would do it all over again the exact same way, with the addition of new, great friends.

Last year I shared our  West Coast of Ireland engagement story and the year before our Boston yacht wedding, and this year I thought I would tell you a little bit about how we met and share some pictures through the years.

Boston

When I graduated from college I got my first job at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. I absolutely loathed it; nothing against the hospital, but it was not what I wanted to be doing, and I don’t like anything related to hospitals. Every day made me cringe when I walked through the ER doors to get to my office, and pretty much every day brought fresh tears when I dealt with sick patients who passed away. Awful.

That is, until the summer after I started, when a colleague and friend started chatting with a new employee from another department. My colleague happened to be from Northern Ireland, and soon enough, I heard her new friend’s accent and realized he was Irish as well.

Well, I have always loved an accent and had loved Ireland since my first visit as a child and fell deeper in love when I studied abroad in Galway.

The new employee started visiting our office more and more frequently, and I can clearly picture to this day the moment where our eyes met for the first time.

I also remember when we were properly introduced, and I shook his hand just after getting a cold yogurt out of the fridge, the condensation and temperature making for a cool and clammy first touch. And the time when he came to “visit my colleague” who he knew was on vacation, to find me stuffing my mouth full of calamari.

He married me anyway. And I learned that calamari is not office-friendly food.

Galway

I found these two pictures in an old album. They are from our first trip to Ireland together in February 2004. I took my first ever teeny-tiny plane ride on a four seat plane with Eric’s dad and his friend. It was terrifying and exhilarating. I should show those photos. . . we could see the ground and the ocean the entire time. It was surreal.

We also celebrated our first Valentine’s Day at one of my favorite Galway restaurants, now closed, followed by watching a play that my brother in law was in.

I fell asleep during the play (jet lag!) which gave me enough energy to go to the Kingshead pub after.

Three years’ worth of Boston fun and travel all over brought us to August 18, 2006.

And five years later, here we are!

Tonight we are celebrating at a Bethel Heights wine dinner at Legal Seafoods, and I can’t wait!

Have a great day everyone Smile

A dark and rainy New Jersey evening couldn’t dampen the love and joy in the air at our friends’ wedding this past Saturday night. Held at the Park Savoy, a beautiful old house in Florham Park, NJ, the wedding was a celebration of two of our favorite people, a friend I have known since childhood and her now husband who has now become a friend to us.

Park Savoy

The evening was humid and pouring when we arrived, but we still got a chance to check out the beautiful grounds. While we waited for the ceremony, waiters passed out glasses of Champagne with blackberries floating in them. Yum!

The ceremony was held in the ballroom, which was dimly lit with pillar candles lining the aisle, creating a cozy, romantic, and sacred feeling in the room. Just the ambiance made me a little teary eyed. The ceremony itself was one of the most beautiful I have ever been to. An interfaith ceremony, it was led by my friend’s cousin who is a Catholic priest, and a Jewish Cantor, and they did an amazing job of blending religious traditions. From both you could feel so much love and so many blessings.

The cocktail reception that followed offered any type of food that you could ever want. One room featured an endless selection of meats and cheeses, smoked salmon, sushi, oysters, and a carving station.

Another, smaller room offered Middle Eastern fare like hummus, pita and kebabs, along with a macaroni and cheese bar with toppings like Bang Bang shrimp, bacon, broccoli, chicken, and cheese. I had mine with the shrimp, spicy, creamy, cheesy, deliciousness.

A literal garden of vegetables and dips made for a lighter option.

We sipped Champagne and nibbled on a bit of everything but mainly stuck to the sushi. It was fantastic, and there were many different types to choose from.

Once the cocktail hour was over, we were led back into the ballroom which had been magically turned into an elegant dining room. Tall, narrow centerpieces made it easy to chat to our fellow table mates, all high school cross country and track friends. It was a fun table.

I was too busy chatting and dancing to photograph dinner, but I couldn’t pass up on photos of dessert. In addition to cake, there were Belgian waffles with toppings, Bananas Foster, tables and tables of pastries, fruit, cookies, and tarts, and mini ice cream cones with a bunch of difference ice cream options. Coffee, tea, and mini dessert drinks rounded out the feast.

Fueled and festive, we danced the night away to a great band and had so much fun seeing the newlyweds so very happy. I love when that happens.

Last night our friends Dan and Raquel got married in Gloucester, MA, and they had an absolutely perfect night for it, gorgeous weather, and fireworks all around to boot. Their wedding was at a marina which made an ideal setting for the day that was in it.

Inside the wedding tent, lots of unique little touches made the wedding theirs. Raquel loves elephants, and so the place card holders were little elephants. Each table was named after a book. We were at Slaughterhouse-Five.

The bride also loves the color red, and the simple red rose centerpieces really popped.

Loved my dress, which I bought in Provincetown a few weeks ago, but had a really bad hair day. I haven’t had a chance to get my hair fixed since the nightmare cut and color that I had awhile back. My highlights are ridiculous, like she blobbed on color in random places, and my hair is darker than my natural shade – I had asked to have it lightened. I just need to make the time to go back to my usual hair salon, but it’s hard to sit still doing nothing for a few hours!

Of course no great wedding is without great food. We started with a very fresh and flavorful mix of greens that included a bunch of spicy arugula. It was amazing.

I chose salmon for my meal, and it was grilled to perfection and served with asparagus, creamy mashed potatoes, and a fruit salsa dipping sauce. It was so yummy!

We ended up dancing the night away with a break for chocolate covered strawberry-topped cake.

The bride’s family came all the way from Barcelona, so I got to practice some of my Spanish. I really need to get back into speaking it more as I was definitely rusty!

I love summer weddings, but then again, I love fall, winter, and spring weddings as long as the couple is happy and having a great time. We have another wedding at the end of the summer in the Berkshires, and it is going to be a LOT of fun. We have been looking forward to it for about a year!

Do you have any weddings to go to this summer? What makes a wedding great, in your opinion?

Happy 4th everyone! I am headed to the beach to soak up some sun!
