Throughout the summer, we’ve gone back and forth on travel and where to go on the few days off that we have. We want to visit so many places in New England – Block Island, Portland, Ogunquit, and Martha’s Vineyard – and we want to visit the North Fork of Long Island again. At the end of the day, since we do have a Sonoma and Napa trip coming up, we decided to do lots of little staycations in the Boston area. Boston is so beautiful in the summer, and there’s SO much to do in and around the city and within less than an hour’s drive. My family visited recently, and we packed a long weekend full of fun activities. If you are visiting Boston and need some ideas for Boston area day trips, I hope you’ll consider the below!

Assembly Row

Assembly Row – This new outlet shopping area is so much more than a place to pick up new clothes. It’s an ever-growing complex of shops and restaurants, with an arts market, a music series, movie series, and more. We visited Assembly Row to check out Legoland Discovery Center, which is a hit with kids and adults. Unfortunately, adults can’t visit without kids, except for during special nights, so grab a niece or nephew or friend’s kid if you don’t have one of your own! It’s a pricy attraction, but it is a bright, colorful, interactive spot. The area along the river next to Assembly Row is surprisingly peaceful, considering how busy the outlet area is, and it makes for a nice long walk or spot to enjoy a coffee or ice cream from the outlets’ many food establishments.

Davis Family Farm

Davis Family Farm

Davis Family Farmland – This is another one for the kids, but as an adult, I have to say I am a huge fan. The farm is full of baby animals that guests can play with, feed, and brush. Pony rides are available, along with a play area with fake storefronts, a “fishing” area, and an entire spray park. Our nieces and nephews love Davis Family Farmland, and at just about an hour’s drive from Boston, it is really a great way to spend a Boston staycation.

Boston Harbor Cruises Whale Watch

whale watching in Boston

Whale watching out of Boston Harbor with Boston Harbor Cruises – While my family was visiting, I decided last minute to take an additional day off to go whale watching out of Boston with them. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The weather was perfect, and we saw over 15 whales, who kept dancing and jumping around for us. Seeing my niece and nephew light up with each whale sighting was magical. Whale watching is something all ages can enjoy; it is an awesome way to be out on the water and experience the wonder of the nature that surrounds us.

Hull Harbor Illumination

Hull, Mass

Hull Harbor Illumination and Hull in general – Hull is a beautiful little coastal town with some fun restaurants, beautiful, clean beaches, and friendly people. It’s an easy spot to fit in your beach time without sitting in Cape traffic. Hingham is a great stop along the way where you can find some fancier restaurants like Tosca for a post-beach date. We love spending time in Hull and Hingham, and if you love the coast and don’t feel like traveling far, these towns make a great day trip from Boston.

And while I am on the topic of Boston travel, I will give a quick shout out to the beautiful hotel I work at! The Royal Sonesta Boston has some great packages, including a Summer Fest package which features free yoga, boat rides, and bikes. If you need a hotel in Boston or Cambridge, check it out!

We love to travel near and far, and we have definitely enjoyed the above trips over the past few weeks!

As we plan our Northern Sonoma travel for the summer, I have been working with Flipkey on finding the perfect house rental for our wine country getaway. I don’t want to rush these next few precious months because I adore summer, but I am excited to have something fun for toward the end of the season. I have enjoyed using the Flipkey site, and through my communications with Flipkey learned of their new virtual walking tour of Boston.

The virtual tour is a fun way to plan your travel around Boston, allowing you to click on a variety of attractions to get more information as well as a street view. Places like the Boston Public Library, historic Warren Tavern, and Bunker Hill Monument are all included, making sure that tourists or residents hit as many of Boston’s hot spots as possible.

Other vacation destination tours will be rolled out soon, allowing travelers to experience a place before actually going there. As someone who loves to know what to expect, I could easily see myself utilizing these virtual tours as I plan a trip.

How do you do your travel planning? Do you do a ton of research and mapping things out, or do you wing it?

We like to do a little bit of both. Most of my research tends to be around food and wine. Smile

During long weeks full of work and never ending house stresses (The plumber from hell’s legacy, which started in February, lives on, with no end in sight.), I spend some of my down time daydreaming about past and future travel. It’s a nice way to (try) to fall asleep at night, and reminiscing about beautiful weather afar helps when what’s outside is less than ideal.

Our trip to Ireland and Scotland this past March seems like it happened so long ago, but I still have so much to blog about! I took hundreds of photos and soaked up lots of little moments. Here are just a few scenes from Scotland that stick with me.

Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel was at the top of our list when planning a trip to Edinburgh, and the local bus system made it very easy to get there, about a 25 minute ride through the city, small towns, and beautiful countryside.

The Rosslyn Chapel is a very special place, and there is an old, good energy about it. It was founded I 1446 as a place of worship, but it is perhaps best known for its role in The DaVinci Code. Rosslyn Chapel is a place of peaceful daily worship, but it is also a place of myth and legend, which include the possibility of the Holy Grail being there.

We wandered the chapel and grounds and had a few eerie feelings, but mostly we enjoyed the architecture and stories about the building and its history. Photos aren’t allowed inside the chapel, but I forgot myself when I saw William, the chapel’s cat, snoozing on one of the pews. What can I say; I am a complete cat lady!

William the cat

While waiting for the return bus to Edinburgh, we took a stroll through the town of Rosslyn, which is lovely and sleepy and very Scottish, surrounded by rolling hills and quietly milling with incredibly friendly people.

Upon our return to Edinburgh, we enjoyed a pub lunch and chat at The Black Cat.  I love a pub lunch, especially after the rain has just come tipping down. A toasted sandwich and hot curried carrot soup, along with a local ale, was just the thing.

The Black Cat, Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a gorgeous city, and with its hilly streets, cobblestones, and old buildings, it feels like a bit of a dark fairytale. Edinburgh Castle looms over the city, and it is a fascinating place to visit. More on Edinburgh Castle and the city’s ghastly history later; this girl went on not one but two ghost tours!

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh’s mild climate also meant that everything was green and dotted with flowers much earlier than in Boston. Prince Street Gardens was the perfect place for morning coffee and shortbread, and I spent most of the trip marveling over the cheerful daffodils, which had popped up everywhere.

This trip was my second to Edinburgh, but with it being only a short flight from Shannon, I can see us going again and again. I can’t wait to share with you some of the delicious dining experiences we had in Edinburgh, as well as our fantastic hotel and other favorites.

What are you reminiscing about this Throwback Thursday?
