So, I really do cook and eat at home. The proof is in the homemade mozzarella and roasted broccoli pizza that I whipped together Sunday night. A whole wheat Trader Joe’s pizza dough, marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella, and crispy crunchy roasted broccoli? Obviously a winning, healthy combination.

Roasted broccoli will be visiting traveleatlove.com often in the coming weeks.I am in a greens mood, and nothing brings out broccoli better than roasting it with some EVOO and crushed red pepper. Mmmm.

The pizza, however, disappointed royally. The mozzarella, as delicious as it was on its own, got really watery and pretty much ruined the finished product. 🙁 I picked off the toppings, but it was too late for the crust.

In happier news, I spent part of last night at the launch party for Basho Japanese Brasserie in the Fenway area of Boston. The wonderful PR ladies who have invited me to Morton’s events in the past invited me to this swanky event, and I was really excited to check it out. If you know me at all, you probably know that I don’t spend a ton of time near Fenway Park. This post explains why. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like the area as a whole. My friend has a victory garden there, and I love Eastern Standard. A delicious new sushi restaurant could be just the thing to make me a Fenway believer. . .

Basho Boston Bamboo

A mini bamboo forest separates Basho’s long patio from the bustle of Boylston street, creating a quieter and more private outdoor dining space, something Boston can definitely always use.

The inside of Basho is beautiful, clean, spacious, and sleek. I love the clean lines and all of the space. The sushi bar is expansive, and it would be an ideal place for a romantic little date.

There were several sushi chefs hard at work, expertly rolling intricate (and I found later, delicious!) sushi rolls.

Friendly servers passed glasses of wine, champagne, sake, and specialty drinks like these refreshing cucumber martinis.

And then the food came out. I couldn’t stay for the entire event, but I did manage to sneak a deep fried shumai.

I don’t remember what this yummy roll was called, but it had asparagus, enough said. Yum.

Basho sushi summer roll

This was a summer roll with spicy tuna. It was so fresh and delicious, with a great kick to it. I didn’t even need soy sauce.

Unfortunately, since the sushi was passed, my photos are kind of blurry. But the food truly was beautiful, and the sushi chefs at Basho really put a lot of attention to detail into their work. Since I can eat my weight in sushi, I look forward to visiting again and ordering off the massive menu.

Edited to add: one side of Basho does have a row of plasma TV’s, perfect for those looking to watch a little Fenway Park action. BUT they kept the other side of the restaurant TV free, a sigh of relief for restaurant TV-haters like me! 🙂

Thanks to Marlo Marketing for inviting me to another great event!

More of my own cooking coming up this week, and hopefully it will be a little less of a disaster than the broccoli pizza!

What is the most fun thing you have planned for this week?

Is it spring or summer? I don’t care what they are calling it, it has been warm and sunny, and I love it! Last week, I received a wonderful spring surprise from my favorite wine and spirits PR rep, the same lovely who invited me to the Austrian wine tasting awhile back. (If you haven’t checked out my Austrian wine tasting post, I would love if you did. I don’t consider myself a great photographer, but I love these photos!)

A bottle of Szigeti Grüner Veltliner Brut arrived at my door, just in time for the rain to stop! I even had a little photo shoot out on the deck.

Szigeti makes an incredible sparkling wine with tiny, festive bubbles and a crisp, slightly tart, citrus flavor. It truly is the perfect wine for long evenings, picnics, and dinners on the patio, which is what we ended up having.

The warm weather brings a few eating options that are different from winter. Gone are the hot soups and stews, the root veggie curries, and the heavy meals. Instead, we welcome salads, cold soups, quick stir fries, and sushi. On this particular evening, the night before a perfect day off, we opted to order sushi from Teriyaki House, our go-to South Boston sushi spot. It’s quick, it’s tasty, and it’s incredibly cheap!

Sushi

The best part about Teriyaki House is that they offer a huge range of Chinese and Japanese options that are yummy and taste healthier than the standard Chinese takeout fare. Their hot and sour soup is a cold cure, multiple times over, and their veggie curry dish with noodles lasts for four or five meals.

For this dinner, we opted for a spicy and crunchy roll, a spicy tuna roll, a garden salad with ginger dressing, and a hot and sour soup. We get the hot and sour soup even in the heart of summer; it is that good.

The sharp bubbles of the Szigeti Brut met the fatty, spicy tuna and did wonders for the sushi! The flavors really danced around together in my mouth providing a satisfying lightness and richness.

I was so lucky to have another opportunity to drink a delicious Szigeti wine and to share it with my husband on a perfect spring evening. Such a wine brings a celebration to an ordinary weeknight! 🙂 And seriously, after such a long winter, we have reason to celebrate, don’t we?

Have you had nice weather where you live? What spring foods/wines are you loving?

Leaving wine country to return to the real world is difficult, and so we dragged out our time there a bit longer by stopping once again at Gloria Ferrer. You may remember this winery from our last trip to California. For me, Gloria Ferrer is to Sonoma what Mumm is to Napa, extraordinarily relaxing and scenic with outstanding sparkling wines at reasonable prices, friendly staff, and a real sense of welcome. Gloria Ferrer is another one of those wineries on a hill, affording those lucky enough to visit a spectacular view of the vineyards below.

Having visited before, we knew exactly what we wanted, two flutes of Va de Vi and two bubbly filled chocolates. Taken in one bite, they explode with flavor both from the enclosed wine and the rich milk chocolate. In addition to my birth year wine, I hope a tray of Gloria Ferrer chocolates will find their way into the celebrations next year 😉

Once you order at Gloria Ferrer, you can take a seat on the expansive patio, and your wine is brought out with a bowl of spicy almonds which pairs very well with the crispness of the Va de Vi. We both breathed a nice long sigh, looking at the valley below and wanting to stay. Our drive back to San Francisco was quick, so we still had some time before we needed to go to the airport. We stopped in North Beach and wandered around a bit, finally deciding on The Sushi Hunter for dinner.  We ordered a green salad with house dressing, steamed shrimp shu mai, a spicy tuna roll, a Philadelphia roll, and a devil roll which was a spicy fried tuna roll with 3 spicy sauces.

The salad was nothing special in that it was just iceberg lettuce, carrots, and a tiny bit of red cabbage. However, the dressing was gingery and delicious. The shu mai were possibly the best I have ever had, and the sushi was very fresh. I especially enjoyed the devil roll which combined an excellent crunch with a kick of spice. North Beach had so many restaurants, and I really want to try them all, but I was happy with our choice. We dropped the Zipcar off, got on the BART, and made our way to the airport. . . already looking forward to returning!
