Newport, Rhode Island is one of my all time favorite New England towns. Summer perfection, in each and every purple hydrangea, in the sparkling blue sea, and sailboats, Newport is certainly dripping with wealth, but it is also laden with New England charm and is an affordable day trip from Boston.

Over the 4th of July weekend, we were fortunate to be invited to visit friends who were borrowing a house in Newport for the weekend. We set off Saturday morning for our favorite New England winery, Travessia, to try the 100% Massachusetts grown Pinot Noir that was just released. I’ll post about that later, but let me say, it is fantastic. You should visit Travessia and eat at Ginger Grill after for kimchi and dumplings. But, again, that’s another post.

We arrived in Newport in the early afternoon and got a tour of the house, which was a block from the Newport Harbor.

Newport, RI

A massive old carriage house style home, this house has five bedrooms with bathrooms and two kitchens. The stove was amazing, the fridge was a gigantic SubZero, and I wanted to move in. It was a seriously large, beautiful, but comfortable house decorated appropriately for its age.

Saturday was one of those gorgeous New England summer days that should last forever, so we didn’t waste much time inside the house. Instead we headed to one of the Newport area’s beautiful beaches, 3rd Beach, a secluded bay side swath of soft sand and warm water. I hate to say it, but I can’t get over just how much nicer Rhode Island beaches are than Massachusetts beaches. So much warmer! And cleaner, and the sand is so much softer. I will always love the Cape, but for swimming, I might be heading South more often.

3rd Beach, Newport

Once we had our fill of sand, we headed to Castle Hill for cocktails on the lawn. Talk about beauty, elegance, and feeling like you are in The Great Gatsby or The House of Mirth.

Castle Hill’s expansive lawn transforms you back to another time, with views all around from the outdoor dining area, bar, and Adirondack chairs sprinkled throughout.

Indoor dining areas are equally impressive, sparing no detail, and taking full advantage of Castle Hill’s views. Once we had our cocktails (a Dark & Stormy for me!), our friend used his keen eyes to spot some Adirondack chairs opening up on the lawn, and we went for them.

Lounging on the lawn at Castle Hill was the perfect way to wrap up the afternoon before heading back to the house for a barbecue. I can’t believe I had never been there before, and I can’t wait to go back!

The weekend is almost here again! Do you have any fun day trips planned?

What new thing will you try this month?

Summer is definitely a time for trying new things. Take for example this past weekend. . .

I went swimming in Boston Harbor, and I liked it. It was a nice part of the harbor in the Harbor Islands, so it wasn’t like we were jumping off of Rowe’s Wharf into trashy, icky water.

Night swimming in the ocean is incredible. I would definitely recommend trying it.

Another thing I am trying this summer? Staying outside, away from TV and my laptop as much as possible. I want to be salty, covered in sunscreen, and as summery as I can get.

We ate several “dinners” on our boat, with dinner consisting of dips, chips, brownies, and cupcakes. This taco dip and hummus quartet were from Trader Joe’s and I definitely recommend them.

These beautiful cupcakes were from Megan, and I definitely recommend seeking her out and eating her cupcakes at some point. Smile These were truly some of the best cupcakes I have ever eaten, bursting with strawberry flavor and not too sweet, not at all.

When I say I am trying to spend all of my time outside, I mean it. We spent Sunday, all day, on the boat in the rain with Michelle, Megan, and their fiancés. It was cool and blissful, and we got to see fireworks from all around.

What else am I trying this July? I have decided to REALLY kick off my Marketing/Social Media/PR consulting business. I have a name, I bought the website domain, I have an email address. I am just waiting on a logo design and to do some legal stuff before I unveil everything. I am so excited!

In the meantime, I am also kicking off a new gig, doing some Social Media work at zipcar, this week.

I’d also like to do more ocean swimming, take paddle boarding lessons, eat dinner outside at least 4 times a week, get my butt in gear for the 10k I am running in September, and just soak up every single second of summer this July.

July is indeed a time for trying new things! Are you trying anything new this month?

*If you are visiting from Boston.com, welcome! I hope you enjoy this grilled corn salad recipe, and I would love it if you check out the rest of my site like the Marketing services I offer and my directory of recipes . Thanks for stopping by! *

This past weekend, I went over to Megan’s house for a little potluck dinner centered around the Tortilla Land tortilla samples that we both received. I will definitely be blogging about that dinner; it was chock full of delicious food and drink and fun ladies, but I wanted to get this corn salad recipe in before the 4th of July weekend. It is a PERFECT barbecue side.

limes

jicama

corn

grape tomatoes

This corn salad is refreshing and incredibly simple. The ingredients:

12 ears of corn, shucked

1/2 large jicama, diced into small pieces

1 pint of grape tomatoes cut in halves or thirds, depending on their size

handful of cilantro

juice of 3 limes

3 teaspoons blood orange olive oil (regular olive oil and a splash of orange juice would be fine!)

I started by grilling the plain corn on my grill pan. I love this thing! I can’t believe it sat in my cupboard for a really long time before I used it. I turned the corn frequently so that it didn’t burn, but I definitely wanted it to have some color.

While the corn was grilling, I was dicing jicama and cutting tomatoes. Once the corn was grilled and cool, I cut it off of the cobs and got started on the dressing.

A simple blend of lime juice and blood orange olive oil, the dressing gave the crunchy corn and jicama a refreshing twist. For the tiniest kick, I added a few pinches of chili powder, a sprinkle of sea salt, and finally a generous helping of torn cilantro.

I loved this salad once everything came together. My first bite seemed a little tart, but once the salad sat for a few hours, the citrus mellowed out. It was a great accompaniment to a delicious meal and would make a great side dish for your 4th of July weekend.

What are your favorite barbecue side dishes? My mom makes a mean potato salad.  I also love baked beans, grilled potatoes, macaroni salad. . . I could eat side dishes all day long!
