With the earlier half of the week being gloriously sweltering (for me, the hotter the better, except for on my long run days), choosing a cold rosé was a must for brunch at Steel & Rye, which has been one of our favorite restaurants for more than two years now.

Liquid Farm Pink Crack

This time I had a date with two former co-workers who I have missed since I took the leap back into Communications Consulting, and the wine is what the winemakers refer to as #PinkCrack. It’s name is well-earned!

This 2014 Liquid Farm Rosé Mourvèdre is so perfectly refreshing and perfect with brunch food like this yummy ham, tomato, and asparagus omelet I had. It’s dry and tart, with notes of white peach, plum, and raspberry and a mineral-y finish. It’s also a beautiful pale pink color that always makes me think of my pointe shoes, elegant, satiny, and one of my first loves.

This wine would go well with a pool, a patio, or the beach, and for food pairings, according to Liquid Farm’s website, it goes well with everything but cereal. I am willing to try it with as many food pairings as possible to find out.

Another weekend is almost upon us, and many of us will be taking advantage of long, sunshine-filled days with friends and family, beach time, barbecues, and other relaxing summer fun. It’s still summer, after all!

I have some perfect wines to go with your summery fun. The below samples showed up in my office one Monday morning not too long ago. A Monday with a wine mail call is not too bad at all!

Rhône rosés

The following wines were kindly sent to me:

  • M.Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône Belleruche Rosé 2013
  • Domaine Le Murmurium Côtes du Ventoux Rosé 2013
  • Saveur du Temps Costières de Nîmes Rosé 2013
  • Lavau Côtes du Rhône Rosé 2013

All of these are Rhône rosés, known for being more structured and fuller bodied than others, and for their ability to pair with food. As I mentioned above, they also pair really well with sun.

We sampled these wines on the boat and in our back yard, and we truly loved them all.

imageMy favorites, however, were the Saveur du Temps Costières de Nîmes Rosé  and the Lavau.

The Saveur du Temps, a Grenache/Syrah blend  was fun and fruity, shared with friends in the sun while enjoying bits of cheese, meat, veggies, and other snacks. It’s one of those wines you could drink with anyone; it’s fruity enough for those who prefer something sweeter, but it’s still nice and dry.

The Lavau, a blend of Cinsault and Grenache,  has a beautiful rich color and medium body, with dark cherry and ripe strawberry notes, fruits that really show themselves in the wine. But there’s also that dry, mineral characteristic that wines from this region also express. I can tell you it’s just really yummy.

Most importantly, the Lavau is a reminder that there are Rosé wines that are made for year-round enjoyment, with heavier foods like spiced grilled steak, which is what we paired this with. Because these wines have more structure and complexity than your regular beach day Rosé, you could easily be sipping them while wrapped up in your favorite sweater in front of a fire pit outdoors. The thought sounds kind of delightful, doesn’t it?

Happy Wine Wednesday! I’m in between not wanting to rush the summer but wanting to have the weekend back again, pretty much always. Add to that the trip to Sonoma that we booked back in May, and well, I have had a hard time concentrating whenever I am inside.

Luckily, work has been busy and fun, and I  have a lot of blog stuff happening, including a few tasty wine samples I get to share with friends and wine reviews to share with all of you.

Chateau Timberlay Bordeaux Blanc 2012

This Chateau Timberlay White Bordeaux is this week’s Wine of the Week because it is, like many of the wines I have featured, a perfect summer wine. I don’t drink Bordeaux wines enough, and I am always so glad when I receive an introduction such as this one.

Chateau Timberlay is one of the oldest chateau in Bordeaux produces estate grown Bordeaux wines with an ecological and terroir driven philosophy. This right bank property in Saint-Andre-du Cuzbac sits right at the 45th parallel, exactly equidistant between the equator and the North Pole in ideal vine growing terroir. (source)

I loved the yellow/green color of this wine; it reminded me of spring flowers. The wine is made of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillion grapes, giving it both floral notes as well as some citrus notes and a gentle acidity. We actually paired this with a dandelion green salad with a honey balsamic dressing, and the acidity and lemony flavors helped to balance out the bitterness of the greens. Delicious!
