Dogs and wine, wine and dogs, what’s not to love? This past Friday evening I finally had the opportunity to go inside the much-anticipated Urban Hound Hotel in Boston’s South End. I don’t even have a dog, but as a dog lover and MSPCA dog walker, I couldn’t wait to see the inside of a building I had been passing by for so many months.

The Urban Hound

Luckily, The Urban Hound Hotel’s open house was open to everyone, dog owners or not, and I made plans with a fellow Boston blog lover, Shannon, to meet at the open house. Before going in, I snapped a shot of the brick exterior and minimalist outdoor signage.

Once inside, I found Shannon and we went for a wander. There were tables with snacks for the human party guests. . .

And the doggie spa area featured a tub filled with bottles of Secco Italian Bubbles Prosecco. . .

There were also a myriad of doggie delights for sale. Kneecap anyone? Winking smile

While wandering, we ran into Natalie with her husband and their dog Weber, a pooch I had been hoping to meet. I can’t believe I didn’t get a photo, but he is an adorably fluffy, friendly, and gentle Portuguese water dog.

We also met an Irish wolf hound who weighed in at 285 pounds!! He was like a small horse but completely sweet and gentle as well.

The Urban Hound

The hotel and daycare digs at The Urban Hound Hotel are cool enough to be part of a hotel for humans, but these are just for dogs. Hotel rooms feature bright and comfy furnishings.

But dogs aren’t spending all their time lounging in their hotel rooms! There is plenty of indoor and outdoor play space.

Dogs played until they were tuckered out. It was quite the scene!

Dogs at The Urban Hound enjoy the following daily schedule:

Morning
6:00am
Rise and Shine! Breakfast and out!
Rest time until 7:30am then PLAY!

8:00am – 5:30pm
day care session

(organized according to dog size, temperament and age)

Evening
6:00pm – 7:00pm
Dinner, out, snuggle time.
8:00 Lights Out!

Sounds like a fun day, doesn’t it!

I won’t lie when I say I was blissfully happy surrounded by all of those dogs. I could have played with and watched them for hours. The Urban Hound is a very cool place, and I also love that they often do activities that support the Animal Rescue League of Boston and other organizations. As a longtime volunteer in an animal shelter, I have seen SO many abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs of all breeds and ages up for adoption. Due to the poor economy, these organizations are almost always full of homeless pets and can use all of the help and awareness they can get!

The Urban Hound Hotel gets two thumbs up from me, and it seemed like it got two paws up from its four-legged guests! If I had a dog and was taking a trip or needed doggie daycare, I would definitely consider this place!

Do you have a dog or are you hoping to be a doggie parent in the future? What kind of dog, and what is his/her name?

It was the moment we Boston food bloggers had been waiting for, the official launch of the Boston Food Bloggers website. Last night, many, many Boston food bloggers gathered together at The Gallows in the South End for food, drinks, to meet new blog friends and to catch up with old ones.

I arrived at The Gallows after a fun day with Alicia, Daisy, Megan, and later, Michelle who joined us after work. Even though it was just after 6:00, there was a line out the door, eager bloggers ready to get in out of the cold and into the party.

South End Gallows

The Gallows is a fairly small space, dimly lit, great for a party but not great for photos. In keeping with its macabre name, The Gallows is decorated with ravens and bats and other things, like this creepy old costume in the ladies room.

Tables were dotted with jars of lemons, carrots, celery, potatoes, and leeks. Fun décor, and more than a few of us wondered if they were take-homes Winking smile

Friendly servers from The Gallows passed trays of Pretty Things Jack d’Or. I have to comment that even in such a crowded space, the restaurant staff seemed really happy and welcoming and were constantly round the room passing the beer, in addition to burgers and other treats.

I ate about a million handfuls of the Bacon Caramel Chex Mix, just one of the menu items making The Gallows a local favorite.

I also enjoyed a cone of poutine, fries with rich gravy and cheese curds. They were messy, but delicious. As a fry-lover, I approve!

I spent just over an hour mingling in the packed room. In addition to the friends I arrived with, I got to talk with lots of other great bloggers and saw many others from across the room. There are so many wonderful people who blog in Boston and never enough time to talk to them all!

The gift bag from the Boston Food Blogger party was off the hook! I am still going through it in awe. In addition to fig spread from Whole Foods, a whole bag of Pretzel Crisps, and biscotti there are all sorts of vouchers for free stuff at local restaurants like Island Creek Oyster Bar, Acquitaine, and Union Bar and Grille, and Wagamama. There are also all sorts of great discounts.  I am going to make a handy list of all of the great offers in the bag; that way when we are going out I will know what great offers and discounts to take advantage of. I tend to forget about coupons before they expire but not this time!

Boston Food Blogger launch party

Everyone behind the Boston Food Bloggers launch, especially its founder, Rachel, and the folks from Urban Spoon did an amazing job planning an event that, I think, made us all feel a little like celebrities. As we discussed on our way out, after all of the work we put into our blogs, it is really cool that someone took the time to put together something so special for all of us.

I am already looking forward to more blogger get-togethers. So much food, fun, and camaraderie! Also, I have updated my About page with some exciting information about my steps into the world of being a Marketing Consultant. I would love if you could check it out, provide feedback, and spread the word!

Boston’s first Food Truck Festival was certainly a meaty affair! The South End Open Markets made room for a caravan of food trucks serving, for the most part,  a meat-lover’s dream.  There were many vendors including Speed’s Hot Dogs, M & M Ribs, the Sausage Guy, and another hot dog truck. The lines for all of these were enormously long. Luckily, the line at Grillo’s Pickles was short, short enough for me to return twice for their spicy, crispy pickles.

These pickles are pretty amazing, though I would love it if they served whole pickles, deli-style.

The line was also short at another favorite of mine, Equal Exchange Cafe. Their nutty, buttery roast is always delicious and always doing good. So my day started off with pickles and coffee, the breakfast of champions!

The Food Truck festival was a great idea in theory, it is an event that might have been better saved for cooler weather and laid out a little better so to avoid maddening, crisscrossing lines. More veggie options would have been nice too. I think I went into the event expecting it to be like the                 FoodBuzz Festival street food event, which was a little off. At any rate, I was hungry, so we headed over to the market part of the open markets.

I admired some of the jewelry and other wares for sale, including these dog bowls made out of old wine boxes. You know that I will have one of these for my someday dog.

I spent some time drooling over Marie Galvin’s stunning hats and fascinators wishing I had an occasion to wear one to.

And then we got down to food business. You can always count on The Herb Lyceum at Gilson’s to have fresh, amazing food. We shared the Herbal Spring Roll, a crunchy fresh roll that feature’s Gilson’s fresh herbs and comes with a flavorful peanutty sauce.

We also shared their BLT which paired salty bacon with chewy focaccia, perfect summer tomatoes, lettuce, and a bit of mayo.

The South End Open Markets always start the day off right. After, we did some Trader Joe’s shopping for the week, especially to get the hubby well stocked since I am going to be working from my mom’s in NJ later in the week while she recovers from surgery. Prior to that I have a Healthworks blogger event, a lunch at Sibling Rivalry, and lots of work to do. . . it’s going to be a busy one!

Now for the giveaway! I know many of you have been reading blogs that were participating in the Athenos “Change for the Feta” month in July and loving all of the feta creations. Athenos has offered one lucky reader a coupon for free feta plus a neat little salad pod for taking salads on the go. All you have to do is leave a comment letting me know your favorite or most unique way to use feta. If you are on Twitter and not following me, please go ahead and follow. And if you have a blog, please link back to this post. And if you haven’t “Liked” Travel, Wine, and Dine on Facebook, I would love it if you would, thank you!

I would add feta to my recent tomato pie. I made it with blue cheese, but I definitely have friends who would prefer feta, and this would be a perfect dish for entertaining.

The giveaway winner will be announced on Friday. Good luck everyone!
