Eventually, we had to leave Timber Cove Inn. Next time we are definitely staying for at least two nights. There is really nothing like sleeping with the sound of waves crashing outside the sliding door and waking up to a foggy morning on the Pacific Ocean. Take me back now, please.

Sonoma Coast

Often when we are visiting Sonoma and Napa, I overschedule our days. There are so many wineries to visit, and because of blogging, we ‘re fortunate enough to be invited to many. This time around I promised I wouldn’t overbook us, and for the most part, did a great job keeping that promise. On our first full day we had three things planned: a tasting at Flowers Vineyard, a tasting with the winemaker at Two Shepherds, and a night of live music at Garagiste.

Sonoma County

After breakfast, we had plenty of time to wander the forests and hills of the Northern Sonoma Coast. It was while doing that we stumbled upon Fort Ross Vineyard.  Fort Ross Vineyard was part of our original plan for the day prior, but our drive took longer than planned. We thought the tasting room was closed on Fridays, but luckily we were wrong, an we enjoyed a delightful wine tasting experience in a beautiful location.

Northern Sonoma

Everything around the tasting room was incredibly lush. The drive up felt like a fairy wonderland, with tons of green and trees lining the road. It was simply magical.

The tasting room is brand new, and it while modern, it is also perfectly rustic, making the most of its natural surroundings. It’s cozy chic, warm and inviting.

The inside is just as nice as the outside, with simple furnishings and a beautiful stone tasting bar that has the option of underneath lighting that glows through at night. Fort Ross does evening events on the property; I can only imagine how beautiful those are. The best part? It’s hard to tell from this photo, but beyond the tree line is the ocean; it’s just spectacular.

We did our tasting with Dale, who was as sweet as can be. Our tasting including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinotage, which is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. This Pinotage, a nod to the South African owners, is made from proprietary clones developed from bud wood brought from South Africa.

I was really on the hunt for Sonoma Coast Chardonnay on this trip, and the 2011 was exactly what I was looking for. I can’t say it better than Fort Ross’s tasting notes:

The hazy pale lemon hue is evidence of subtle stirring of the lees and bottling without fining or filtration. The decadent texture intertwined with electrifying acidity and stoney minerality expresses the high elevation and cool coastal climate. Aromas of lemon tart, butterscotch, clementine, mineral, and marzipan soar from the glass. As the wine touches the palate, Bartlett pear, wet stones and golden plum flavors wrap around the energetic, linear, nervy core. The wine is elegant, with supple texture and a crisp expansive finish. This wine is certain to evolve for years to come.

And I really can’t say how lovely and balanced this Chardonnay is. Yes, it has some butterscotch and notes of vanilla in it. It’s slightly creamy but also oh-so-crisp. There’s so much going on, and now there are a few bottles in my possession.

We were also fans of their Pinot Noir and Pinotage. Tasting their Pinot Noir was fun; it’s always great to taste different vintages and fruit from different vineyards side-by-side to compare and contrast.

The Pinotage was also fun and delicious. It’s not something you find much of in Northern California, and we loved the juicy and bold dark fruit flavors that were tempered with a bit of earth and smoke.

Fort Ross Vineyard is a little off the beaten path, and it’s a drive from the rest of Sonoma County wine country. I will tell you though, it’s entirely worth the trip. The views, wine and hospitality are the perfect addition to your trip. Once you visit, you will know why we keep going back.

The Northern Sonoma Coast might be my favorite place on earth right now.

Over the years and many return trips to Sonoma and Napa, we’ve stayed in a variety of fabulous places. From bed and breakfasts to chain hotels, we have found some incredible gems, and I have to say that we’ve been lucky; all of our Napa and Sonoma lodging experiences have been good ones.

On our last trip, as we always do, we went back and forth on which towns to stay in and what types of accommodations we were looking for. Timber Cove Inn was a must-have; it’s literally our little piece of heaven on earth. Healdsburg is also always really hard to pass up. It’s one of my favorite towns, so easy to wander around all evening long, and this time around we decided to splurge a little and stay right on the square at Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza. After a gorgeous drive from Timber Cove and Flowers Vineyard and a fantastic Two Shepherds wine tasting, we pulled up in front of the Inn, happy to be back in one of our favorite places again. Sunshine, 80 degree temperatures, and a growing stash of new wine meant we were in the best moods ever.

Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza

Check in was pleasant and easy, and we were given a quick tour of the inn so that we knew where wine hour and breakfast were. Then it was time to just spend a few minutes enjoying our room. Cozy, sweetly decorated, and overlooking the beautifully green Healdsburg Plaza, our room was a nice place to take a breather. Over the course of the weekend, we enjoyed wine and coffee in armchairs with the breeze blowing through the room, retiring at night for a soak in the giant tub and a fire in the fireplace.

Healdsburg Inn on the PlazaUp a short flight of stairs is the inn’s sun room where, in the evening wine and snacks are served and in the morning, a gourmet breakfast magically appears. Breakfasts are a signature of Four Sisters’ Inns, and they were definitely full of creative, delicious items each day.

Inn on the Plaza, HealdsburgWe only made it to the wine hour on our first night, but we appreciated the beautiful spread that was left out for us to enjoy before we headed for a walk around Healdsburg’s many tasting rooms and live music at Garagiste. Fruit and Cheese Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza

After a long day of appointments and being in the car, a glass of Healdsburg Ranches Chardonnay (unoaked and perfect for Chardonnay haters) was a perfectly refreshing pick-me-up and a segue fro the perfect day to a fabulous evening.

We had an amazing time at Healdsburg Inn, and we would return again in a heartbeat. It was comfortable and luxurious, and the location in Healdsburg just can’t be beat.

Did last week really happen? That’s the question that keeps playing over and over in my mind when I wake up in the middle of the night, and what pops up first thing every morning. It’s gotten slightly quieter as the days have passed; last Monday night, every time I woke up and remembered, I felt like I was being punched in the stomach.

It’s all still so hard to comprehend.

We actually arrived home from the gloriousness that was our trip to Northern California wine country on Monday morning at around 10:30 a.m. The original plan was to land at 7 a.m., get a few hours of sleep and head down to Hereford and Boylston Street, where we watch the marathon when I’m not running. Our delay meant getting to sleep later and ultimately staying home. I woke up from my nap groggy and sad; Sonoma is where I love to be, and I had lived for this trip. I couldn’t imagine feeling more down than I did at that moment.

We all know what happened next. None of my friends or family were physically affected, thank God, but the sense that I might never feel happy again invaded my heart and wouldn’t budge. I didn’t want to blog, or eat, or work, and couldn’t sleep. Honestly, I kind of still feel that way. A few people who live in other places have mentioned it must be nice to be back to normal; I think most of us don’t really know what normal is right now. I feel like I am going through the motions of every day in a little bit of a fog. One day at a time. . .

I guess blogging is a step in the right direction though, so I’m here to tell you about  the most perfect little getaway on the planet, Timber Cove Inn. We made our third visit to this rustic little retreat on the Northern Sonoma Coast a couple of weeks ago, and it’s pretty easy to see why we keep coming back.

Sonoma Coast

In miles, Timber Cove is not that far from the heart of the Russian River Valley and Dry Creek Valley, but give yourself time to get there. Winding, sometimes one-lane roads high above the Pacific mean slow travel, and breathtaking vistas mean you will want to stop multiple times. Once you arrive at Timber Cove, just breathe. The air is pristine, peppered with the smell of redwoods and the sea, and all you can hear is the sound of crashing waves below. It is heaven.

Timber Cove offers a variety of rooms and packages, and they have some great deals.

We took advantage of the Romance Package, with a S’mores add on. Our package included an oceanfront room with a spa tub, a bottle of Scharffenberger sparkling wine, and a delicious breakfast on-site at Alexander’s.

Scharffenberger

You won’t want or need to do much when you arrive at Timber Cove, but there are some pretty walking trails if staring out at the ocean gets tiresome. We found “Lover’s Lane”, a path down to a cliff with a seat for two, along the way.

Timber Cove

Hearts are etched into the cliffside. . . L’amour.

As you would imagine, the Pacific sunsets at Timber Cove are one of the best parts of the day. We tend to enjoy the slow sunset from Alexander’s Restaurant, taking a few minutes from our Sonoma wine to take in the pink, orange, and yellow as the sun drops into the sea.

Speaking of Sonoma wine, Alexander’s at Timber Cove offers quite the list. I love this FerrarI Carano Fume Blanc.

The food at Alexander’s is outstanding and means you don’t have to leave the property, a good thing since there’s not much for miles around. The “Ridiculous” burger was ridiculously delicious, as were the truffle fries that came along.

Alexander's at Timber Cove Inn

Tuna tartare was fresh and mixed with raw corn, a crunchy, sweet favorite of mine. And while the food at Alexander’s is great, the service is even better. For the second time in a row, we sat at the bar and hung out with Karen, the best bartender ever. Seriously, she has made our visits to Timber Cove so much fun. She knows the area well and gives great advice (Order snacks to go after dinner. Once the kitchen closes, there’s no food until the morning, and it’s not like there are stores nearby. The cheese plate was a good call for a late-night snack.).

Alexander's at Timber Cove Inn

The best part of having an ocean front room at Timber Cove is leaving the sliding glass door slightly open so that you can hear waves crashing all night, the most perfect way to fall asleep. Being on East Coast time means being up for a magnificent sunrise, a peaceful calm before everyone else is awake, and ensures an appetite for a big breakfast and perhaps a mimosa at Alexander’s, again while overlooking the ocean. I don’t think there is a better way to prepare for a little wine tasting.

Alexander's at Timber Cove Inn

Timber Cove is really a special spot and now a fun Sonoma County tradition for us. Our last trip was perfection; I don’t think I could possibly be happier than I was during those days. It all seems like so far away and so long ago, but blogging certainly brings a little bit of it back to life.

How are you all doing after this whirlwind, heartbreaking, scary week?
