Sicilian wine

Sicily has been a dream trip of mine forever. It just looks like such a beautiful, rustic place with amazing coastline, culture, and of course food and wine. If I did book a trip to Sicily, the Planeta Estate would most definitely be part of my itinerary.

Planeta Rose

I have been a fan of Planeta wines since first sip of their Nero d’Avola , so I was very excited last week to discover their rosé. It was a cold, dreary, end-of-winter day when I wandered into Cambridge Wine & Spirits for a couple of gifts, when I was greeted with these beautiful bottles of pink wine, open for tasting.

A blend of 50% Syrah and 50% of Sicily’s beloved Nero d’Avola, this wine is fun and flirty in color, a blushing pink that lends itself to a beautiful tablescape with fresh peonies and a lunch spread of charcuterie, crudités, and quiche. The wine is light and refreshing with strawberry and mineral notes and nice acidity. I am sure that it pairs perfectly with Sicily’s fresh fish and local vegetables, and I can imagine myself sipping it in a lounge chair under the Sicilian sun.

For now, Sicily is at the top of my travel bucket list, and Planeta rosé is in my glass to tide me over.

What are your dream trips? Have you cracked open the rosé yet?

What will you be drinking this 4th of July weekend? Are you a beer person, wine person, a little bit of both, or do you prefer seltzer with a little lime? I personally like all of the above, when the mood strikes.

I am excited to say that this week, after an inspired visit to The Urban Grape, I signed up for the Level 2 class at the Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center at Boston University. I am already Twitter friends with my instructor and wine expert, Stacy Woods, and I look forward to meeting her in person and learning all that I can from the program.

Since it is a holiday weekend, I thought I would suggest a couple of wines that might go well with your weekend food choices.

The first wine is one that I tried at The Urban Grape, a bottle that my cat broke by pushing it off of the counter. . . Parés Baltà Ros de Pacs, 2009.

This is a very unique rosé, darker in color and bolder in flavor than many other rosé wines. It almost drinks more like a light red than a rosé but is still very summery, especially when chilled for about an hour. The flavors that come through are very much of cherries with a slight acidity that keeps the wine from being too sweet. This wine would be great with grilled fish, fresh salads, and even strongly flavored cheeses.

Another great wine we have been loving lately is from a tasting that we did at Bin Ends, Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria Sicilia 2008. I love Sicilian wines for their ripe fruit and hint of spice, characteristics that reflect the soil and hot sunny climate in Sicily. The Planeta website has a really nice description of this wine:

Our Cerasuolo di Vittoria is born in the beautiful countryside of Dorilli, between the sea and the Iblei mountains. The name of the only DOCG in Sicily is derived from ‘Cerasa’, cherry in Sicilian dialect. It is produced from the indigenous varieties Nero d’Avola and Frappato. A unique wine, recognisable and unforgettable for its youthful flavours and aromas of cherry, strawberry and pomegranate, due to the characteristics of the soil and the climate where the vines are cultivated. A wine like few others, uniting tradition and delight.

This wine would go great with barbeque type food which many of us will be eating this weekend!

Graham Beck sparkling wines never cease to surprise me with their great value, festive little bubbles, and taste bud enticing flavors. They also go incredibly well with food, and I would drink these with just about anything. They are a really great value, and I got a nice message from the winemaker the last time I reviewed Graham Beck wines, which says a lot since I write about so many wines!

Hopefully if you are stuck searching for a great wine, these suggestions will help! I would love to hear what you are drinking this weekend, and whatever you do be safe!

Be back tomorrow with lots of pictures of the animal friends I volunteered with today 🙂

That’s right.  On the first day of my Eat from Home Challenge, I cheated. The day started out well. Since I was working from home, I had a big old spinach and strawberry smoothie for breakfast along with lashings of Lyon’s tea as my sore throat from last week has turned into a full on chest cold.

Lunch was the best salad ever, a mixing bowl filled with an entire heart of romaine, an entire avocado, a sprinkle of crumbled blue cheese, 15 grape tomatoes, 4 pieces of Morningstar veggie bacon, and an English cucumber. Topped with Frank’s hot sauce, this was enough to full me up until the Morton’s event which was close to 5 hours later.

All was well. The Morton’s event was something I was invited to as a blogger, so it did not count in the challenge. But what I had for dinner did. Yes my friends, I ate takeout, BUT it’s not my fault! My friend was visiting from Western MA, and she offered to bring me Bueno y Sano, which from this post you know is the food that got me through college. I had 2 bean soft tacos, wicked hot, with yogurt, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and cilantro. And I dipped them in burn your face off homemade hot sauce which actually burned my skin! But it tasted soooo good! I am a Bueno y Sano addict, and since I only have it a few times a year, I cheated and jumped at the chance!

I am back on track and on Tuesday enjoyed a Fage Greek yogurt with honey, another giant best salad ever, and some almonds at the office. Since I was forbidden from buying snacks, I also had 2 free office hot chocolates because I was pretty hungry! Tuesday’s dinner was a delicious Mediterranean dish that I will be posting as part of Oldways’ Mediterranean Month. And I have lots more planned for the week including a yogurt marinated chicken.

And since it is Wine Wednesday, a wine review of a bottle I just picked up, a Sicilian red made from the Nerello Mascarese grape. This bold and slightly spicy wine had a hint of very ripe fruit and a nose that reminded me a little of that sweet, dry leaf smell of autumn. This is the 3rd Sicilian wine that I have purchased lately, and I love the spice and warmth in these reds. Add another grape to my count!

The challenge has been difficult, but I am committed to being on track, at least until Friday night 🙂

What is the most challenging thing you have ever done?
