Happy Friday, and Happy Birthday to my husband! Grill 23 is where we will be celebrating tonight, followed by a weekend of who knows what. We may go to Martha’s Vineyard or hang out on the boat or just have a low key weekend at home. The weather and our levels of tiredness will decide that for us.

When we are in the mood for a low key, close dinner, Harp + Bard in Dorchester is a really fantastic option. It’s within walking distance of our house, has a great selection of beers and cocktails and a huge food menu, along with a friendly staff and comfy vibe. When my family came to visit a couple of weeks ago (for an absolutely fantastic weekend), we decided Harp + Bard would make a great place for the whole family.

cranberry cosmo Since there were so many of us, they seated us in the back room, which ended up having for ourselves the entire night. The front room and bar were busy, but we enjoyed being able to talk and let the kids walk around a little where we were. I started with a cold Cranberry Cosmo, its icy tartness just what I wanted after a long day at the Children’s Museum. . . if they sold cocktails, I think they would make a mint!

We started with two favorite appetizers, Buffalo Chicken Dip and Fried Pickles. The dip is molten hot, spicy, and tangy, served with crispy chips. It’s a major indulgence worth every calorie.

I could eat fried pickles all day every day. These are nice and salty and crunchy, with a cool and creamy ranch dipping sauce. Why can’t healthy foods be this addictive?

For my entrée, I decided to go with something homey and New England-y, the lobster pie special with mashed potatoes and carrots. What surprised us all most was how delicious the carrots were. They were cooked in a little bit of chopped garlic, and we were pretty much fighting over them. I will definitely be trying to make carrots like this.

lobster pie The lobster pie contained an entire sweet lobster in a light sauce with a buttery crumb topping. It was heavenly and really added to the home-style, neighborhood  feeling of the restaurant.

lobster pie Though I was completely stuffed from appetizers and dinner, I had to have a bite of the pizza. Harp + Bard has won awards for their pizza, and I can see why. It’s a nicely seasoned, thin crust pie, perfect for eating at the bar with a cold beer.

Harp + Bard pizza We’ve eaten lunch and dinner at Harp + Bard many times, and we have enjoyed every item we have tried. It’s one of those places you always feel welcome, and the menu is big enough that you can always try something new.

Our annual college roommates weekend on Cape Cod always involves great food, wine, cocktails, and lots of fun. The first night tradition is to do a lobster boil, followed by karaoke in Provincetown. The second night, if I am lucky enough to get a day off to stay, is devoted to a delicious Provincetown restaurant. This year, we celebrated my birthday at Ten Tables Provincetown.

I had been to Ten Tables in Provincetown for cocktails before but never eaten at this sweet spot in a lovely old house. Being still out of season, Ten Tables wasn’t crowded yet, and we enjoyed a really delicious and relaxing dinner there.

I started with the same cocktail I had the last time, Paint the Town Red, a completely refreshing blend of Wodka Vodka, St. Germain, fresh strawberries, lemon juice & splash of Cava Rose. I could drink this cocktail all day long, preferably with a beach view.

One of my friends sipped this lovely lilac cocktail, Grey Gardens, with a garden view.

The menu offered lots of delectable items, and I decided that after a night and day of indulgences, I needed a vegetable in my life. Crunchy, fresh cucumbers, golden oregano, and feta made for a refreshing starter.

I balanced the cold and crunchy with some briny, creamy fried oysters with piquillo pepper relish. It was my second time eating fried oysters that weekend. I can’t get enough fried seafood.

My friend’s burger, topped with an egg and nestled next to gravy fries was the perfect comfort food. The fries were salty and delicious, even better dunked in smoky BBQ sauce.

We may have been full and ready for more cocktails and dancing, but a visit to Ten Tables is not complete without their chocolate terrine with Thai basil ice cream. It is one of the best desserts I have ever had, and I will always make room for a few bites.

Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain and Cambridge are both fabulous, and the Provincetown location certainly measures up. Provincetown is one of my favorite places on the planet, and Ten Tables definitely makes it more delicious.

Healdsburg is full of great restaurants. Over the years, we have had fabulous experiences at places like Scopa, Barndiva, Dry Creek Kitchen, Willi’s Wine Bar, Bistro Ralph, and more. Healdsburg is a little like heaven.

With all  of the restaurants available, it becomes difficult to choose. Always one to want to try new things while also wanting to return to old favorites, I end up spending a lot of time trying to figure out where to eat. In the end, it’s best to ask a local.

On our first night in Healdsburg, we had dinner with Two Shepherds winemaker William at Campo Fina. It was so fabulous I forgot to take photos. Or I was jetlagged and on lots of Cartograph Rosé. Actually, it was a little bit of both.

Campo Fina was so great, and we would definitely go back. When we asked for suggestions for our dinner the next night, Spoonbar came highly recommended. After a day in Napa Valley, we headed back to the wine hour at the Healdsburg Inn and then wandered Healdsburg for a bit before heading to dinner. We may have stopped at Cartograph and joined their wine club too. It was a great day.

Wine tasting pretty much always makes me want a cocktail or a beer. I love wine and wine tasting and talking about wine, but at the end of the day, mixing it up a little is nice, and Spoonbar was the perfect venue for cocktails. I ordered this pretty jalapeno number called Jalapeno Business: Charbay Raspberry Vodka, Clear Creek Loganberry, Lemon, Ginger, Raspberry-Jalapeno Foam. In addition to being pretty in pink, it packed a spicy punch with nice berry accents, perfect for sipping slowly. There was a definite burn.

We weren’t super hungry, thanks to the wine hour snacks, so we decided to order a few appetizers to share as we often do.

There was a grapefruit and avocado salad with brioche croutons that was fresh, tangy, delicious.

appetizers and cocktails  The best and most interesting dishes were also from the snack menu. Baked cheese gougeres were suspended in a pool of melted fontina. Each bite was light, fluffy, and cheesy, so decadent.

The rock shrimp and seeded granola was also really memorable for the combination of flavors and textures; sweet and salty, soft and crunchy. I would never think to combine shrimp and granola, but this just worked so well.

Spoonbar is a vast open space with windows out on to the sidewalk and a very cool vibe. We were on East Coast time and thus early diners, but I am sure once acclimated to Healdsburg time, we would be late night regulars. The restaurant was a perfect recommendation and a fantastic way to end a day of wine tasting.

The real end to the night came at another new favorite we visited twice on this trip, the lounge at the Hotel Healdsburg. Live music, great wines by the glass, and a super sweet staff made this relaxing spot the place we enjoyed nightcaps two nights in a row. Just a block from our home base on this trip, the Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza, the Hotel Healdsburg is a must-visit for anyone staying in town. It also happens to be home to Dry Creek Kitchen; come for dinner, stay for music. . . and be prepared to never want to leave!
