I love Jamaica Plain. I am pretty sure that if we stay on the East coast, JP will be the next place we move. I first started spending time in this Boston neighborhood about three and a half years ago when I started volunteering at the MSPCA, and I have been going back ever since.

On Thursday night, after the Brugal party at the Urban Grape, we decided to swing through JP on our way home to try one of the area’s new restaurants, Canary Square.

Canary Square’s space is SO different than that of its previous occupant, Alchemist (a restaurant I really liked!). Where Alchemist was broken into rooms, Canary Square is wide open with a long bar at the far end of the room and tons of windows.

Any restaurant that starts my experience off with house-made pickles gets an immediate gold star. If these were on the menu, I would have gotten several orders. I am a pickle fiend.

Canary Square has a really good beer and cocktail menu as well as quite a few wines by the glass. It was hard to decide what to order, but I settled on a Harpoon Leviathan, a dark, strong beer served in a cute little glass. The beer was actually too dark to photograph in the dark room, but it was really good.

Deciding on a meal was even more difficult. I thought for sure I would get the SLT, a BLT with smoked salmon in place of the bacon. And I really do want to return to try that.

But, when my eyes came across a really interesting salad, my greens-craving body decided to go for it.

WARM SWISS CHARD AND CRANBERRY

Interesting, right? I love chard, and as I am going to be focusing more on getting stronger and toned in my workouts, I liked that this had a lot of protein from the egg and chicken. This was the perfect winter salad, and I never would have dreamed it up!

My husband’s meal was a little less exciting but just as delicious.

WOOD ROASTED PULLED CHICKEN

hand cut fries

These were some seriously good fries, thick cut, well-salted, rustic and flavorful. The slaw was quite good as well, and the tender, zesty chicken went perfectly with the peppery bread.

Canary Square was a great place for a casual and reasonably priced meal. The service was quick and friendly, the vibe was fun and relaxed, and the restaurant was bustling but not obnoxiously loud. I look forward to returning to sample some of their special cocktails.

I have been on a big greens craving lately but feeling too cold to eat salads, so warm greens it is! What have you had a craving for these days?

Ahhh summer vacation memories. In going through old posts, trying to find a post about a particular wine, I realized that I never posted about our dinner at Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg, CA. Or maybe I did, but I can’t find it anywhere. . .

So to warm myself up and to pump myself up for the March 6 Napa Marathon and following vacation in Napa and Sonoma, I thought I would share a few photos from a delicious summer dinner.

Dry Creek Kitchen

Dry Creek Kitchen is just one of the many restaurants owned by Chef Charlie Palmer. Sitting proudly on Healdsburg Plaza, it is light, airy, and open with extensive outdoor seating and a beautiful outdoor courtyard. These photos are from our July trip to Healdsburg, but in this same spot on our March trip, I met Kevin from Top Chef Winking smile while he was setting up for Palmer’s Pigs and Pinot event.

Prior to our arrival at Dry Creek Kitchen, we were informed by our wonderful innkeeper at Bella Villa Messina that Dry Creek Kitchen allowed you to BYOB, and if the bottle was a Sonoma wine, there is no corkage fee! We decided on a bottle of J Cuvee bubbly, one that quickly became a favorite sparkling wine of mine (check out this post on Bubbles for your Budget!).

Upon arrival, we received some beautiful bread sticks and an amuse bouche, a shot of flavorful soup in a cute little espresso cup.

For my starter, I ordered roasted corn soup topped with a black truffle flan. Can you even imagine? The flavors of summer in California captured so beautifully in a bowl with black truffle flan. . .

For more summer beauty, my main dish was an artichoke ravioli with shrimp, drizzled with a light cream sauce. Like everything at Dry Creek kitchen, this plate was like art, presented beautifully on a long, narrow white plate.

The best part about the food at Dry Creek Kitchen was that the portions were perfectly sized and satisfying but not so stuffing that we could not have dessert. I don’t recall the exact name, but this was sort of an adult s’mores with rich chocolate cake topped with sea salt on a toasted marshmallow cream bed. Again, the perfect portion, especially for sharing.

And if all of that wasn’t enough deliciousness, with the bill we were presented a little tray of sweets. I only took a bite of one of the little jelly squares as I was completely full by this point.

Dry Creek Kitchen is not my favorite restaurant in Healdsburg (I save that designation for Scopa and Willi’s, I think because they are cozier and more intimate.), but it is definitely a beautiful dining experience. I would absolutely return for the fantastic service and food that is beautiful on the plate and on the palate.

Is winter getting you down? What is a favorite summer or vacation dining memory you can share to warm us all up?

Abby Park

After our Blue Hills Brewery adventure last Saturday, we decided to make a South Shore day of it with dinner at Milton’s Abby Park. Like many suburban restaurants, Abby Park graced us with the convenience of a parking lot, a little luxury that is always a nice surprise.

Even though we were there for a fairly early dinner at 5:30, the restaurant was starting to fill up, and while we didn’t have a reservation, we were seated but told that our table did have a reservation for 7:30. We both knew we were in the mood for appetizers and drinks and figured we had plenty of time.

Abby Park

The inside of Abby Park is really nice, dimly lit with lots of dark wood, a large square bar that was completely full of people, and tables sprinkled throughout the upstairs and in a smaller room downstairs. We had a cozy table for two, and while it felt a little close to the other two top next to us, being a little crowded on a Saturday night is to be expected. Although, when they people sat down next to us, they introduced themselves and said they were having dinner with us. Ha. Ha.

Prosecco

Ever the fan of bubbly, I started with a glass of Prosecco while the husband had a Blue Hills IPA in the spirit of our Blue Hills Adventure.

As predicted, we decide to share two salads and two appetizers for our meal. I started with the grilled Caesar salad. Ever since my first grilled Caesar salad at Diavola in Geyserville, CA, I have ordered this dish whenever I see it on the menu. I am huge when it comes to temperature and texture contrasts, and the mix of cold and hot, crunchy, and soft bits of lettuce are pure salad love for me. The creamy dressing was garlicky and smooth, dotted with briny bits of white anchovies (optional), and crunchy, buttery croutons. I wish I could say that I shared this entire head of lettuce with my husband, but he didn’t get more than a bite. It was SO good.

He ordered the roasted beets salad with feta and pistachios. The bite of beet that I had was sweet and cold with a hit of feta and a pistachio which brought up a discussion about why we don’t buy pistachios more often. I decided it is because they are addictive, and we would eat them all in 10 minutes. Winking smile

BLT pizza

For our hot courses, we split the BLT&C Pizza which was phenomenal. It sounds kind of weird, but it brought together cheddar cheese, bacon, fresh juicy tomatoes, lettuce, and a chive mayonnaise. I can not wait to order this pizza again.

We also shared the lobster dip with flatbread which was very good, but not good enough for me to stop eating the pizza, for the most part.

We decided against dessert as the meals we had were really filling, but I will return for the chocolate bread pudding.

The service at Abby Park was really great. The restaurant manager (or owner) was around checking in at tables really frequently, maybe a little too frequently. By the crowds inside the restaurant and those in the small waiting area and bar, you could tell that Abby Park is a local favorite for families, groups of friends, and couples out for a nice date. As you would expect, the prices were reasonable, less than those in the city. Sometimes going out in the burbs is just the laid back experience we are looking for.

If you live in the city, do you often get out to the suburbs for restaurants? If you live in the suburbs/country, do you get into the city often?
