Some nights just sparkle with great conversation, delicious food, fine wine, and new friends. Red White Boston’s Women Winemakers dinner at Sandrine’s Bistro on Tuesday night was just one of those evenings.

Sandrine's Bistro

Sandrine’s is a small, elegant restaurant tucked away on Holyoke Street in Harvard Square. I have heard of it before, but I had never actually seen it. It is definitely worth finding.

The entire event was built around the theme Women in Wine, Putting the “I” in Team: Inspiring Individuals for Team Success. The special winemaker guests for the evening were Maureen Martin from Clos du Bois and Janet Myers from Franciscan Estate.

Sandrine's Bistro

Sandrine’s was abuzz with great energy, a few local bloggers, Elina, Amanda, Jason, and Justin, and lots of great California wine starting with 2008 Franciscan Sauvignon Blanc. Served with passed flammekeuche, Alsatian pizza, the Sauvignon Blanc was my favorite white wine of the evening.

The cocktail reception led into the dinner and speaking portion of the event. We had the great pleasure of sharing a table with Maureen Martin, winemaker from Clos du Bois.

Dinner started with Spring Pea Veloute with smoked mussels, paired with Clos du Bois Calcaire Vineyard Chardonnay and Franciscan Cuvee Sauvage Chardonnay, both 2007.

For me, the Clos du Bois Chardonnay was the perfect balance for the smoky mussels and sweet peas in the soup. It was light, crisp, and elegant, lacking the oaky flavors that I try to avoid in Chardonnay. I enjoyed the Franciscan Chardonnay as well but found it to be more buttery and creamy.

Our second course was grilled beef with baby spinach and mushroom ragout and a black pepper Cabernet reduction. While I don’t often eat beef, I had a few bites of the tender meat dipped in the sumptuous sauce. The earthy flavors in the dish went well with both wine pairings, Franciscan 2006 Magnifcat and Mt. Veeder 2006 Reserve Red.

The third course was a light and refreshing salad. Salad after the entrée just makes perfect sense for cleansing the palate and adding a light freshness before the sweetness of dessert. The salad course also brought my favorite wine of the evening, Clos du Bois 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir. There are wines that I breathe in, and immediately I smell Sonoma. This was one. The aromas coming from the glass were heavenly, lots of dark fruit. The wine was silky smooth with a nice level of acidity, and there were those gorgeous dark fruit flavors again, black cherries, plum. Yum.

The final course of the evening was dessert, lavender crème brulee. Once I tapped open it’s crispy burnt-sugar crust, the smell of lavender greeted me. Paired with the sweet creaminess of the crème brulee, the lavender was subtle and lovely, one of my most recent favorite flavors in drinks and dessert.

Throughout the course of dinner, Janet Myers and Maureen Martin shared with the crowd how they put the “I” in team, that is engaging each employee at each stage of the process of getting their beautiful wines in the bottle and at our dinner tables. They talked about making sure each person had a significant role and felt empowered, that his or her contribution affects the rest of the team and the final product. To help bring home that point, Clos du Bois is engaging its employees in a Cinco de Mayo scavenger hunt which will have employees going through various parts of the winery and needing to depend on one another’s individual expertise to get through each stage.

In addition to the official topic of the evening, sitting with Maureen Martin gave us the great benefit for learning a bit more about her and the winery. It was quite exciting for Sonoma wine lovers like me.

I always enjoy Red White Boston events (and I mean that, even if I do help promote them!). At every event, I meet at least a few new, interesting people whose path I may never have crossed otherwise. The app does a great job of connecting people with wine, but the greatest success has been connecting people with people, over wine. Smile

The next tasting crew event is May 16 at WGBH, join me there!

I couldn’t believe my eyes this morning when, on the way home from a meeting, I saw on Twitter (source of all news, no?) that another earthquake, a 7.4, had occurred off the coast of Japan. It made me nauseous and my heart hurt. I can’t even imagine. I just can’t.

Last night I joined Red White Boston at the always-chic Noir at the Charles Hotel. Red White Boston’s tasting crew meets monthly, and this meeting was special; it was a wine-up auction to raise money for Red Cross Disaster Relief in Japan.

Noir Bar

Here’s where some really good people came in. The folks at Noir and the Charles Hotel donated the space for the event. Noir is a crowded bar in bustling Harvard Square that is full pretty much every night, and rightly so, as their food and drinks rock. I found it incredibly generous that they were willing to rope off a portion of the restaurant for our fundraising event.

Noir

But that’s not all they did. They also gave us free food: dips and chips and their signature pizzas kept on coming throughout the night.

Noir at the Charles Hotel

I didn’t get photos of all of the food like the to-die-for mushroom pizza because I was having too much fun chatting with Meesh and friends, Brian, Amanda, Ray and Rachel, Christopher, Melanie, Emily, and others to take many photos. Red White Boston events are FUN! And I’m not just saying that because I do some social media work for them; they always fill up with really fun people. Meet me at the next one!

The food was a very nice touch, the event space was everything we could ask for, but the Charles Hotel didn’t stop there. No, they donated brunch for two at Henrietta’s Table for the auction.

The main event of the evening was a silent auction of some great bottles of wine with all proceeds going to Red Cross Disaster Relief. Through the magic of Twitter, Red White Boston’s founder, Cathy, got in touch with a magical organization called Cellar Angels:

Cellar Angels was created by a compassionate group of wine loving friends intent on changing the world. Our mission is simple: connect small and family run wineries to a larger audience, expose wine lovers to incredible purchase opportunities offered exclusively to Cellar Angels members from partnering vineyards, and provide assistance to a select group of charities. We love wine. We love introducing others to great wine and we love helping others. Cellar Angels provides an opportunity to accomplish all three.

They donated a case of wine, just like that, for the event. Because of Massachusetts laws, we couldn’t open the wine at the event, so it was auctioned off. At the end of the evening, winners went online, on site, and made a donation for their bid to the Red Cross, then walked away with their winning bottle of wine.

As I sit here, I really can’t imagine what it must be like to be in Japan or Haiti or any other disaster-ravaged country. It sounds trite, but events like this really do make you stop and think about how lucky we are. And even luckier to know businesses like Red White Boston, Charles Hotel, and Cellar Angels. I love it when businesses I already like do good things. It guarantees I will be back again and again.

Boston’s newest wine lovers meet-up group, the Red White Tasting Crew, met for the first time last night at the Enormous Room in Cambridge’s Central Square.

Perfect for a chilly evening, the Enormous Room, which is above Central Kitchen,  is dimly lit with pillow-lined benches for lounging. It ended up being an ideal location for wine tasting.

The Enormous Room

Because the Tasting Crew is a Red White Boston group, I arrived a little early to see if I could help out. Surprisingly, even after a 16 mile run (where I saw Anthony Bourdain!), I wasn’t sore and had quite a bit of energy which ended up being a good thing because the Tasting Crew drew quite the crowd!

The long rectangle-shaped space that is the Enormous Room had several tables which Cathy from Red White Boston had set up bottles of wine, glasses, and tasting sheets with both notes about the wines and some conversation starters for the tweet-up portion of the event. As the event went on, then tweets were flying!

As soon as Tasting Crew members started to arrive I started pouring wine. The first up was Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Noirs, a sparkling wine I have enjoyed time and again, especially on visits to their Carneros tasting room (Gloria Ferrer visits here and here and here).

Wine Tasting

Next up was a surprise wine, not on the list. Panther Distributing brought a McClaren Vale Chardonnay, K1. This was one of the wines I missed over the course of the night; while pouring I actually didn’t get to empty my own glass often, a good thing after the long run and not a lot of food!

I did enjoy the wines that I tasted, which included a Grenache Syrah, Plume Bleue that I enjoyed at the Amanda Hesser Formaggio Kitchen event. Blending two of my favorite grapes, the Plume Bleue is just fruity enough with a hint of spice to give it some edge. This wine can be found at an excellent value, and I would definitely recommend having a few bottles on hand.

Cathy got our attention when she talked about the 2003 Nicolette Christopher Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and her love for this wine was spot on. This was a spectacular sip with classic Napa Cab flavors with an extra bit of elegance and a lush full mouth feel. It made me even more excited for another visit to Napa in March for the Napa Valley Marathon. It is getting close!

Also in the tasting lineup were two Malbecs from Cahors, France and a blend of Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah, a Domaine de Fontsainte Domaine Rouge, from Corbieres in Southwestern France. I missed these while pouring, but I have two out of the three in my wine fridge. I am planning a Malbec tasting of a Cahors Malbec, an Argentinian Malbec, and a Napa Malbec sometime soon, all for the sake of the blog. The things I do Winking smile

My favorite wine of the evening ended up being another not on the list, a Shiraz brought by Panther Distributing. It was simply stunning, and I didn’t even get the name. I will definitely be getting in touch with Panther and will share once I have that information. You have to try it.

tapas

Some light snacks including bread, hummus, and olives were scattered throughout the room for nibbling throughout the night. Somehow I ended up so busy chatting and pouring I also missed these.

It was completely worth it though; I met and reunited with some of Boston’s best food and wine folks, and the vibe in the room was just so festive and positive. I genuinely can not wait until the next Tasting Crew event and look forward to collaborating with my fellow testers in the future.

For more (and much better) photos, head on over to F2%, a really beautiful blog written by the husband of my very first real boss. Justin is an amazing photographer, and it was great to run into him last night at the Red White Boston tasting event.
