If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that I ran the 2010 Boston Marathon on Team ALLY for The ALLY Foundation. If you missed it, check out my marathon recap; it is one of my proudest days 🙂

In the 10 months or so since I decided to join Team ALLY, the foundation’s work has become very important to me, and I jumped at the chance to buy tickets for their Pink for a Change Gala at Beacon Rock Mansion in Newport, RI.

The dress theme of the event was festive pink attire, and believe me, I stressed about what to wear. In the end, and at the last second on the day before, I found a dress that ended up being just perfect, if I do say so myself 😉

On the way to Newport we stopped at Travessia Urban Winery in New Bedford, MA for our wine club event and to catch the heartbreaking last 30 minutes of the US World Cup game. I’m still proud of how our team played, and when Americans catch on that soccer is way more athletic and interesting than our national pastime, we will have an even better team!

We arrived at Beacon Rock Mansion after driving through downtown Newport which is one of my favorite places to spend a summer day.

The mansion had a long driveway that eventually led to this view.

Each side of the palatial home was flanked by harbor views for miles around, to the left, Sail Newport, straight ahead, Goat Island, and farther off, downtown Newport. We stopped for a photo op.

The Beacon Rock Mansion was decorated simply for the event in The ALLY Foundation pink and green, and there were photos of Ally, her friends, and foundation supporters throughout the downstairs.

Part of the fundraising efforts for the evening was a silent auction, and I was so grateful when Cakebread Cellars responded to my request for a donation with this cookbook, apron, and hat. The ALLY Foundation included me as part of their Gala Committee, and I was glad to be able to help in some way.

The food for the event was FANTASTIC. It was cocktail party style eating, my favorite way to go, and there were passed hors d’Å“uvre like Kobe beef sliders, puffs filled with brie and jam, shrimp, clam cakes, spanakopita, and sushi rolls passed all evening long.

There was also a raw bar with a constant supply of delicious oysters, littleneck clams, shrimp, and lobster.

Inside there was a station set up with crudite, cheese, and baskets of grilled bread with various spreads. Don’t worry, I spilled some amazing olive tapenade on my dress. You can’t take me anywhere. . .

The party was fun and festive, and while rain threatened and I felt a few drops, it never poured, at least as long as we were there. Luckily, we got to spend the entire time outside, and we were entertained by a really great cover band, The Rolling Who?. I may have even danced a little.

I am so grateful that the weather held off, because it would have been a shame to have to miss views like these.

All in all a very lovely evening was had by all, and I look forward to this event next year. If you live in the Boston area, The ALLY Foundation’s next event is their Flip Flop Regatta in Charlestown. It looks like quite the party, and I am hoping to attend.

I hope you all enjoy your Sunday. There will be more World Cup watching for us as well as wine tasting at Bin Ends Wine and some family visits. Our adorable nephews are visiting from Italy, and they are SO much fun!

Have a good day everyone!

Hello lovelies! It is once again Sunday evening, and instead of sitting at home dreading work, I am out with my hubby at Ten Tables hopefully having a great dinner. I am so tired today, and after walking dogs this morning, am spending the day working on the blog and writing copy for my big work catalog. In case you missed my post on Friday, I joined Twitter, and you can now follow me here:

I need to work on my page, but one thing at a time! I am officially a Twitter addict, and I spent most of the car ride home from Newport on it. Speaking of Newport. . .

We drove down at around 9:30 yesterday morning to make it in time/early for the 12:00 start time of the Food & Wine Magazine sponsored Grand Tasting at the Newport Mansions Food and Wine Festival. On the way, we stopped at one of our favorite bakeries, Green Hills, in the Adams Village neighborhood of Dorchester. If you are looking for real Irish scones, go here. They are amazing and taste just like the ones that we get in Ireland. They make a great cup of tea and a bunch of other delectable baked treats too.

We arrived in Newport at Easton’s Beach at around 11:30. The festival was so well organized and provided free off site parking and a shuttle bus which made everything easy. It was a GORGEOUS day.

P9261212

I was very glad that I wore a jacket in the evening. Brrr!

The Grand Tasting was held at the Marble Mansion, which was only incredible. I can not even imagine the decadent lives that the residents of these mansions had. They are straight out of The Great Gatsby and The House of Mirth, two books that I love.

The tasting was out back under a giant tent with the most amazing views ever. Table after table featured wine, food, cocktails, event planners, you name it. I was in heaven and a little overwhelmed. Luckily my foodie friend Jill was there too. We started with bubbly, then made our way around for whites and then reds. I had some Mumm Napa which brought back memories of our recent trip. Then stopped for a nibble of cheese. I had a couple of delicious cheeses from Champignon North America, including a creamy, rich cambazola.

We got a couple of classic St. Germain cocktails and decided to sit outside to enjoy the view for a little bit, and to pace ourselves at this incredible feast.

P9261234

Can you even imagine this being your lawn? I could certainly get used to it. . .

After resting for a bit, we went back inside and continued tasting. Overall I would say I tried about 15 wines, ate 3-4 small plates of the most amazing lobster macaroni and cheese ever, a few cups of tuna tartare with a delicious, gingery, chili flavor to it, a few bites of cheese from Kerrygold and Cabot Creamery, some chocolate from Pure chocolate, and a cup of hazlenut gelato from Gelato Giuliana. Oh yeah and a couple of shots of delicious, black coffee from Pierce Bros Coffee. Everything I had was in small portions, perfect to get just a taste. . . or in the case of our repeat visits for the lobster mac and cheese, a few amaaaaazing tastes!

One of the really cool things about the event was the Celebrity Chef area, where Jacques Pepin and Joanne Weir were both stationed at one point or another. I enjoyed browsing through Joanne Weir’s cookbooks while she talked to another event attendee about how great Julia Child was and how much she missed her! It was amazing. . . I can’t even imagine what it must have been like to know and be a colleague of Julia Child.

I grew up watching Jacques Pepin on public TV, and seeing him brought a tear to my eye. I really can remember loving food and cooking SO long ago and watching Jacques and his daughter in the kitchen

Not the best photo of him, it was crowded!

At the end of the day we discovered the Mionetto table which ended up being our very favorite. For some reason it was not at all crowded, and we got to chat with the helpful and knowledgeable rep while tasting all of the prosecco that he had to offer. I really fell for the gold label prosecco, and I will definitely be hunting it down very soon. It is a really affordable, ultimate celebration bubbly with a nice fruitiness that I think guests with all palates would enjoy. It is very easy to drink 🙂

After the event was over, the hubs and I ended up walking back to get the car, a nice 15 minute walk which led us back to the beach. I was feeling carefree and took my shoes off to walk in the ocean. It was SO warm!

P9261254 P9261259

I just love that space between summer and fall in New England where you just have to be outside, and it is just perfect. I would have gone swimming if I had brought a swimsuit.

We walked on the beach for  bit, saw a wedding about to take place as sun was going down, got a little weepy at this, oohed, aahed, then got in the car for some water and a Pure bar. The Healthy Living Summit swag bag just keeps on giving! 😉

We drove back into town to the hotel where our friends were staying and decided on sushi for dinner. We walked a very short walk from the hotel to the Newport Tokyo House. I had a Kirin Ichiban.

P9261265

And then a LOT of sushi. We had this, times two.

P9261267  P9261266

In addition to tempura vegetables and bowls of salted edamame. Honestly, I was still a little hungry after we were done! It was so good, especially the spicy tuna which was given to us in abundance and was very spicy. It was the perfect way to end a day full of culinary delights! I will definitely be attending this event again next year!

Don’t forget about my Get Well Stay Well giveaway which will stay open until Friday evening. Have a relaxing night!

Happy Bastille Day! It was a day of gorgeous food, until dinner that is. I started out with a great green monster (spinach, Amazing Grass, blueberries, banana, pumpkin, and choc soy milk) and for lunch had a delicious homemade gazpacho (canned plum tomatoes, 1/4 red onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1 large cucumber, 1 large red pepper, drizzle olive oil, 1/3 cup cold water, cracked black pepper, all blended together) with a sandwich thin and a big ol’ bag of cherries and almonds. The dinner at my favorite restaurant, Petit Robert, was one of the most disappointing meals in a long time. I will blog about that tomorrow as today I have reserved for only good things: New England coastal wine.

After our fab day in Newport on Sunday,we drove about 5 miles to Portsmouth, RI for a visit to Greenvale Vineyards. Back in June, we tasted some of Greenvale’s wine at the Coastal Wine Trail Kickoff and wanted more.

If you read my blog, then you know that I love wine. I love all of the dozens of different flavors that can come from grape varietals and storing methods, and I love the way the flavors bring out food. Over the past year plus, I have really gotten into visiting vineyards, and I have been lucky so far to visit vineyards in Italy, wine tastings in Spain, a wine tour in Oregon, and several vineyards in RI and MA, plus many other local tasting events and wine dinners.

I don’t just love the wine in visiting vineyards; I also really love the whole experience, the fields of grapes and the beautiful scenery that often accompanies these visits. Greenvale Vineyards certainly offered the whole package.

From the long country road, to the fields and marshes leading down to the bright blue sea, to the fields of grapevines, and the quaint, beautiful wooden house, Greenvale takes you on a mini vacation from the second you arrive. Though not far at all from Newport and the main road, I felt totally worlds away from the city.

We were greeted in the tasting room by a friendly member of the staff and a gorgeous black lab. Nature: check, dog: check. . . wine: check. Meghan is a happy girl!

We definitely planned on doing a tasting and got started right away. Over the course of the tasting we tried:

2006 Chardonnay Select: Oak aged, this chardonnay was not for me. I am not a chardonnay fan in general, and while this wasn’t bad, it just had a burst of oaky flavor that I don’t care for.

2005 Greenvale Chardonnay: This chardonnay was better as it was a blend of oak and steel aged wine. It had a more buttery finish and was definitely more drinkable.

2007 Greenvale Vidal Blanc: This refreshing, light, delicious white was the star of the day on Sunday, as it was at the Coastal Wine Kickoff. It has crispy, sunny flavors that are perfect for drinking out on the deck. I would pair it with anything from a light cheese to seafood to a light summery dessert.

Skipping Stone White: I also tried this at the Coastal Wine Kickoff. It is my second favorite Greenvale wine now, with a very floral nose and a slight acidic crispness that I would love with a nice curry.

2005 Cabernet Franc: This is a very lovely, rich red that tasted like dark red fruit and had a nice smooth finish. We didn’t buy any of this, but I plan on buying some for the fall.
The lovely and engaging woman who poured the wine for us chatted with us quite a bit about her upcoming wedding, and we talked about our wedding a bit as well as travel. She was a delightful person, and our conversation added another element about wine that I love, communication and socialization. The friendly staff at Greenvale are reason enough to return, and the variety of different, yet all delicious wines are a definite bonus. They also have jazz every Saturday afternoon. If you are in the RI/MA area, I would absolutely recommend a visit to Greenvale. I know that we will be going back and look forward to more adventures on the Coastal Wine Trail!
