Newport, Rhode Island is one of my all time favorite New England towns. Summer perfection, in each and every purple hydrangea, in the sparkling blue sea, and sailboats, Newport is certainly dripping with wealth, but it is also laden with New England charm and is an affordable day trip from Boston.

Over the 4th of July weekend, we were fortunate to be invited to visit friends who were borrowing a house in Newport for the weekend. We set off Saturday morning for our favorite New England winery, Travessia, to try the 100% Massachusetts grown Pinot Noir that was just released. I’ll post about that later, but let me say, it is fantastic. You should visit Travessia and eat at Ginger Grill after for kimchi and dumplings. But, again, that’s another post.

We arrived in Newport in the early afternoon and got a tour of the house, which was a block from the Newport Harbor.

Newport, RI

A massive old carriage house style home, this house has five bedrooms with bathrooms and two kitchens. The stove was amazing, the fridge was a gigantic SubZero, and I wanted to move in. It was a seriously large, beautiful, but comfortable house decorated appropriately for its age.

Saturday was one of those gorgeous New England summer days that should last forever, so we didn’t waste much time inside the house. Instead we headed to one of the Newport area’s beautiful beaches, 3rd Beach, a secluded bay side swath of soft sand and warm water. I hate to say it, but I can’t get over just how much nicer Rhode Island beaches are than Massachusetts beaches. So much warmer! And cleaner, and the sand is so much softer. I will always love the Cape, but for swimming, I might be heading South more often.

Once we had our fill of sand, we headed to Castle Hill for cocktails on the lawn. Talk about beauty, elegance, and feeling like you are in The Great Gatsby or The House of Mirth.

Castle Hill’s expansive lawn transforms you back to another time, with views all around from the outdoor dining area, bar, and Adirondack chairs sprinkled throughout.

Indoor dining areas are equally impressive, sparing no detail, and taking full advantage of Castle Hill’s views. Once we had our cocktails (a Dark & Stormy for me!), our friend used his keen eyes to spot some Adirondack chairs opening up on the lawn, and we went for them.

Lounging on the lawn at Castle Hill was the perfect way to wrap up the afternoon before heading back to the house for a barbecue. I can’t believe I had never been there before, and I can’t wait to go back!

The weekend is almost here again! Do you have any fun day trips planned?

My favorite event of the year, Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival has come and gone. It was, as expected, a beautiful day filled with food, wine, and sunshine. We were completely blessed with the weather, had a great tasting crew, and had the opportunity to taste many wines from around the world.

The grand tasting took place at Marble House, one of the majestic mansions on Newport’s Bellvue Avenue. Marble House sits on a a large expanse of green grass that rolls down to the Cliff Walk, Newport’s famous walk along the ocean.

This was our wine tasting view.

We started out with the bubbly, of course, and had a few sips at the Loire Valley, Mionetto, and Mumm Napa tables. While tasting at the Mumm table, I ran into Catherine Stanton Schiff, host of the show Cocktails for Everyone. We had dinner months ago, and it was so nice to see her again!

Delicious bites were everywhere, and we were sure to take wine tasting breaks for some food samples. Alaska Seafood’s table was hard to miss, and they were giving out recipes as well as crab cocktail. I chatted with their Marketing Director for a bit and learned that they have some fun recipe contests coming up. Speaking of, if you haven’t buzzed my Alaska Seafood Foodbuzz recipe, you can do so here: http://www.foodbuzz.com/blogs/2594074-foodbuzz-alaska-seafood-dinner  Pretty please 😉

We sampled some truffles with a tea-scented filling, Williams Sonoma pumpkin bread and hot apple cider, and the famed lobster macaroni and cheese from Russell Morin Catering. Last year we ate more than our fair share of this mac and cheese, and this year it was as perfect as ever.

As always, it was fun to taste wine from wineries we have visited. Out of all of the wines that we tasted at the Newport Mansions Festival, my favorites were ones we had already tried from Ladera. Their Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is one of my favorite Cabs, and since we joined their wine club, there will be some on its way to our house very soon. The son of the owners of Ladera was pouring, and he of course knew a lot about the wines and the property and exuded that friendly vibe that is so widespread in Napa.

Other favorites included the Cyrus Cab from Alexander Valley Vineyards, a Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc-Viognier, plus a little snack from Kerrygold to cleanse the  palate. I actually got full from all of the food samples I tried!

We stopped to check out Billy Costa in the cooking demo tent before heading out back once again. I didn’t realize this last year, but the pagoda that is in the Marble House’s backyard houses some of the best food at the Newport festival in addition to a tasting bar, this year featuring Rhone wines.

While inside the pagoda, I sampled some delicious Grenache Syrah wines as well as some of the most heavenly pumpkin bread pudding with warm vanilla caramel sauce. Add that to my “must-make” fall list!

I have started really enjoying Rhone varietals like Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier, so I was glad to see the Rhone so well-represented. I would have also loved to have seen some Austrian wine, but if it was there, I must have missed it.

We followed the event by toasting with some more Mumm Napa, snacking goldfish at the Newport Marriott, and then heading off for some dinner.

I say it all the time, but I can’t say enough how much I love the Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival. It is in one of the most breathtaking settings in New England and offers such high end food and wine, all in a not-too-crowded, friendly environment. I think that next year I want to make an entire weekend out of it to attend more of the events and to soak up the lovely Newport vibe. The event planners do an amazing job; I wish they would do it twice a year!

What a great event! I had my skeptical moments, first when we saw the massive line waiting to get in, and a few other times when the people pouring wine were completely clueless about the wine they were pouring, but overall while it was a little too cocktail-heavy, I thought the Newport Winefest was fantastic.

As entered the first tent on the grounds of the Newport Yachting Center, we received glasses to use for the evening in addition to an event program with information on the various vendors.

There were plenty of people working the event, and it ran very smoothly. And they had real, inside bathrooms with lines that moved quickly. That’s important!

Newport Wine Festival

There was a lot of wine to be tasted, and rather than cover them all, I thought I would share some new and old favorites instead. You can see the complete festival lineup here.

We enjoyed Sauvignon Blanc from Quivira, a winery we missed on our last Dry Creek Valley trip. We also loved this very dry Whispering Angel Rosé from the South of France. It was an unusual, very pale Rosé, light and summery.

Though we were going to miss Beringer’s Great Steak Challenge, we stopped by for a sip of their Sauvignon Blanc as well.

I found the Pop Chips. . . several times throughout the evening. I love the salt and pepper so much!

Always a lover of Austrian wine, I liked this Grooner Gruner Veltliner for its crisp, fresh citrus flavors. Their marketing is a lot of fun too, and the representative pouring the wine was very passionate about Gruner and had a lot of knowledge about the wine.

Every wine tasting I go to has Cabot cheese, and I am always sure to sample some of my favorites.

We sipped bubbly St. Germain cocktails and enjoyed a rosato wine by        Lidia Bastianich’s family, made a friend from Casa Sola in Tuscany, had many laughs in the Hendrick’s tent, set up to look like colonial India with rich fabrics, travel trunks, and even a croquet area.

They had a wide array of cocktail samples, but I loved the cucumber and jalapeno cocktail with a pickle garnish. It was nice and spicy but also refreshing.

One of  our favorites of the event was the Cigar Box Malbec, a big, intense red made with 100% Malbec grapes from Mendoza Argentina. I will definitely be hunting down a few bottles of this wine soon!

Cigar Box Malbec

Our favorite wine table overall was definitely the White Oak Winery table where we tasted their Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and chatted with the representative who actually works at the winery. One of the nice things about Newport Winefest was that many of the people pouring wine were closely connected to it, either being the winemakers themselves or working at the winery. Often when the wine is poured by a large distributor, they represent so many brands that I end up knowing more about the wine than they do!

White Oak Vineyards

For the Joseph Carr wines, we had the pleasure of meeting Joseph Carr himself and tasting his fantastic Napa Cab made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. The New York Times called him a wine producer to watch, and his wine certainly lives up to that.

From the beginning of the event we decided to save the Balvenie and Glenfiddich tables for “dessert”, so after some great seafood and more Pop Chips, we wandered over to the main tent to visit the William Grant booth. On the way there I saw this cool absinthe table. I didn’t try any, but I thought it was a great action shot!

Absinthe

When we finally got to the William Grant tables, we were greeted with an array of Scotch whisky’s from Balvenie and Glenfiddich and some friendly and knowledgeable representatives. Tasting through the lineup was the perfect way to end the event. As the weather was getting cooler and more overcast, breathing in the smell of the Scotch brought back memories of many visits to Ireland.

We finished the night with some great food at The Wharf Pub in Newport.

Wine tasting tips

  • If you can avoid wearing perfume, do. Tasting wine is so much about smelling it that overwhelming scents can completely ruin the experience.
  • Take your pour, and step to the side. There is plenty of wine to go around, and hugging the table while people wait behind you is just rude.
  • You don’t need to drink the entire pour you are given. It’s perfectly fine to spit or dump it out, even if you love it. The pours at Newport Winefest were big, sometimes half glasses of wine, and if I actually drank them all I would have been in trouble!
  • Taking photos is not just for bloggers!I got so many compliments on the idea to photograph the labels of wines I enjoyed. It’s an instant memory helper!
  • Try something new. That’s what I love most about these types of events. They are great at helping you to find new wines. Think you don’t like Merlot?

I can’t wait for my next event. Coming up on September 23 is Vino Voyage III. You may remember my post on the last Vino Voyage; it was a blast, and I am looking forward to the next one!

Newport Mansions Food and Wine Festival, my favorite event of the year, is also coming up on September 25.

Whew, long post! I hope you are still with me! Did you do anything fun this weekend?

I will pick a winner for my CSN Stores giveaway tonight, so be sure to enter if you haven’t!
