Visits home to NJ usually feature dinners at home, at my sister’s or some of the same restaurants I ate at growing up in my hometown. I love the familiarity; we’ve stuck with places for decades because they are good.

But, as you all know, I also love to try new restaurants, and I was excited when my sister suggested the new-to-us Stage House Tavern for Monday night.

Stage House Tavern

Located just a few towns over, the Stage House Tavern features a historic building with an expansive patio and outdoor bar that offers an all-you-can-eat BBQ deal.

They are also known for their tinis, and that was the reason my sister and I were there. Once our family was seated, I perused the lengthy cocktail menu. Happy to see that NJ does allow drink specials for Happy Hour, unlike Massachusetts, I decided to start with a Flirtini, vodka, pineapple juice, and a Champagne float.

Flirtini

Since we were all pretty hungry, we kicked off the meal with tavern fries, smothered in cheese and bacon, crispy on the outside, hot and soft in the centers, pub food at its finest.

My mom and I also split a pot of steamed clams which were swimming in a pool of butter and white wine and were perfectly cooked. We sopped up the liquid with crunchy slices of toast.

As is typical with me, I had a hard time deciding on what to order. The Stage House Tavern has a huge menu with a bunch of fun items, including about six different types of ravioli. The hot and humid day made me avoid ravioli, but I will definitely return to try those out.

Instead I went for this cool beet salad with goat cheese, almonds, and dried cranberries along with the tuna tartini, tuna tartare in a spicy wasabi broth.

The tuna was so tender, ground up and really flavored by the wasabi. I scooped it up with a crunchy sesame cracker. The two small dishes went together really well, offering contrasting flavors and a well-balanced meal. I am trying to make healthier choices, and while I definitely indulged on fries and drinks thought I did an okay job.

My sister and I decided to try another cocktail from the long list, and we both went with the raspberry martini which combined blackberry vodka with Chambord, lime, and cranberry juice. It was delectable.

I found the Stage House Tavern to be a fabulous dining experience. There are at least five more cocktails I would like try and ten menu items, so a return visit will definitely be happening.

My visit with my family was four days long with the wedding in the middle, and it still flew by. I spent a lot of it working, doing things that probably could have waited and knowing all along that I was wasting precious family time in front of my laptop but still so obsessed with working and being on top of things that I couldn’t let go. That is definitely a quality of myself that I dislike, and I wish I could go back and change the way I spent so much of this time. I’ll have to remember to read this post the next time I vow to take some time off. Winking smile

One of the things I miss about living in New Jersey are the diners. You can go to a diner in another state, but I guarantee it will rarely be as good or as cheap as a New Jersey diner. We had our favorite local growing up, the Blue Fountain, or Fontaine Bleu as it is now known, a place where you could get breakfast, lunch, or dinner at 1:00 am, where you would eat pancakes with ice cream after the prom, and where families congregated on Sunday mornings for heaping plates of food for around $5.00.

I miss real diners.

Our friends’ NJ wedding happened to be about 20 minutes from the nursing home where my nana lives (97 years old in November, holla!), and so we opted to miss the wedding brunch to spend some time with her. Along the way, we spied signs for the Jefferson Diner, noting that it had been featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives (triple D to you), and since we did need to eat something, we turned sharply off of the freeway to find diner bliss.

Jefferson Diner

The Jefferson Diner is large which is perfect for a diner because the good ones are always buzzing with lines. It was spotlessly clean and shiny inside and out.

We only had a few minutes’ wait, and while we waited I checked out the deserts.

There were cookies the size of my head plus some.

And every type of cake imaginable, including a cheesecake with baklava on top. Diners in NJ, generally owned by Greek families, make serious baklava.

Real diner menus are books. And with some restaurants you would worry, “How on earth could they make this many things and make them good?”

Well, the NJ diner somehow manages to do it. Whether you are getting a Reuben sandwich, a baked fish dish, a steak, or a pile of desserts, everything is always good. Especially the fries and grilled cheese.

My breakfast was simple, one delightfully runny egg, hash browns, and buttered wheat toast. The other thing I love about diners? You can have anything you want. Want a scrambled egg and a runny egg with a piece of French toast and a sausage link? You got it. In the mood for one pancake? It’s yours. Diners aim to make their patrons happy and can cook up anything in a jiffy.

The Jefferson Diner was a great place to stop, and since it is so close to my nana, I will likely be back to try some dessert.

While Massachusetts has diners, I have yet to find one that stacks up to my NJ favorites. And it will probably stay that way.

A dark and rainy New Jersey evening couldn’t dampen the love and joy in the air at our friends’ wedding this past Saturday night. Held at the Park Savoy, a beautiful old house in Florham Park, NJ, the wedding was a celebration of two of our favorite people, a friend I have known since childhood and her now husband who has now become a friend to us.

Park Savoy

The evening was humid and pouring when we arrived, but we still got a chance to check out the beautiful grounds. While we waited for the ceremony, waiters passed out glasses of Champagne with blackberries floating in them. Yum!

The ceremony was held in the ballroom, which was dimly lit with pillar candles lining the aisle, creating a cozy, romantic, and sacred feeling in the room. Just the ambiance made me a little teary eyed. The ceremony itself was one of the most beautiful I have ever been to. An interfaith ceremony, it was led by my friend’s cousin who is a Catholic priest, and a Jewish Cantor, and they did an amazing job of blending religious traditions. From both you could feel so much love and so many blessings.

The cocktail reception that followed offered any type of food that you could ever want. One room featured an endless selection of meats and cheeses, smoked salmon, sushi, oysters, and a carving station.

Another, smaller room offered Middle Eastern fare like hummus, pita and kebabs, along with a macaroni and cheese bar with toppings like Bang Bang shrimp, bacon, broccoli, chicken, and cheese. I had mine with the shrimp, spicy, creamy, cheesy, deliciousness.

A literal garden of vegetables and dips made for a lighter option.

We sipped Champagne and nibbled on a bit of everything but mainly stuck to the sushi. It was fantastic, and there were many different types to choose from.

Once the cocktail hour was over, we were led back into the ballroom which had been magically turned into an elegant dining room. Tall, narrow centerpieces made it easy to chat to our fellow table mates, all high school cross country and track friends. It was a fun table.

I was too busy chatting and dancing to photograph dinner, but I couldn’t pass up on photos of dessert. In addition to cake, there were Belgian waffles with toppings, Bananas Foster, tables and tables of pastries, fruit, cookies, and tarts, and mini ice cream cones with a bunch of difference ice cream options. Coffee, tea, and mini dessert drinks rounded out the feast.

Fueled and festive, we danced the night away to a great band and had so much fun seeing the newlyweds so very happy. I love when that happens.
