Hi from Sonoma and Napa! Today is my birthday na na na na na! 🙂 We have quite the agenda of tasting room visits for the day, plus some relaxing walks and dinner in Healdsburg, one of my favorite wine country towns. Turning 30 for me is all about looking ahead. . . while reflecting on all of the wonderfulness that has touched my life and also thinking of ways to pay that forward.

Today I am happy because of my family, which includes my awesome husband, my friends, health, my cats and all of the animals I get to volunteer with each week, sunshine, travel, food, wine country, and all of you! What a journey this year has been, and how much blogging has changed my life! A year ago I was not even really reading food blogs, much less writing one, and here I am now, having met soooo many great people, attended the Foodbuzz Festival and the Healthy Living Summit, received many great wines and other products to review. I majored in English in college with no idea what I wanted to do, except for the fact that I knew that writing should be involved. Well I do spend some time writing for a living, but I love how blogging has allowed me to take that love into my own hands and out into the world.

 

Goals for 30

1) Continue learning and working hard in my current job while hopefully moving closer to a field that I am passionate about, whether it be food, wine, or travel

2) Take more long weekends to spend time with family and friends.

3) More yoga! And relaxing and being present in general. I am a pretty big anxiety case, and I would like to not spend my entire life like that!

4) Kick this bloggy up a notch! I would love to have more guest post and freelance writing opportunities, increase my blog traffic, and generally get more involved in the food, travel, and wine blogging worlds. Attending BlogHer Food in San Francisco (and hopefully FoodBuzz Fest too!) and maybe a few other blogging conferences. . . and DEFINITELY lots of blogger meetups!

5) More US/local travel. I really want to visit the Finger Lakes in New York, Savannah, New Orleans, Charleston again, NYC, as well as someplace in Canada, maybe Newfoundland?

Happy Friday! This week’s featured foodie is another blogger I have recently started following, Sasha from http://www.akitcheninbrooklyn.com. I love the idea of having guest contributors from around the world and know that I will learn a lot from Sasha’s blog. We also share an obsession with blog stats and lack of patience, which I know I am slowly trying to overcome!

Plus, one of her favorite posts is about Napa, one of my favorite places, and the photo she chose is with a glass of wine. A blogger after my own heart? 🙂

First off, thanks Meghan for including me as this week’s Friday Featured Foodie on TravelEatLove!

How long have you been blogging?

I am new to blogging, but I have been cooking for quite some time now and consider myself to be a pretty big foodie by this point. Over Thanksgiving, someone suggested that I start a food blog, and thus A Kitchen In Brooklyn was born from my own kitchen in Brooklyn. I have a lot of friends who like to cook, eat and write, so I decided to have a large group of guest contributors on A Kitchen In Brooklyn, who would write from twice a week to every other month from their kitchens around the globe. Now, in addition to me, there are 16 “guest writers” who write from their kitchens in Toronto, Boston, Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Jersey City, Long Island, Budapest, Dublin, Sun Valley Idaho, Seattle and Philadelphia.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

I love to write. That’s actually the true reason I went to law school and blogging about food and cooking is a great way to share my dual passions for cooking and writing. I love both planning the meals, preparing the food and writing about it – the entire process. What I love most about A Kitchen In Brooklyn is that I have such a great group of friends/contributors to share this passion with – I love reading everyone’s contributions from our diverse culinary backgrounds and geographic locations. I really enjoy reading other cooking blogs for the same reason and meeting other foodies through food blog networking as well – it’s a great way to learn about cooking and to learn new recipes. I love sharing my own recipes on my site in a way that I can make it easy for readers to understand and replicate them.

Least favorite?

I’ve been lucky enough in not to have encountered any of the bad stuff in blogging, so far.  I just want readers to enjoy my site and learn about different recipes, cooking techniques and to have fun!

It’s easy to get obsessed with daily analytics, so I am trying to avoid that and let the blog grow and come of age on its own, which requires a little bit of patience.

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

Each week I seem to have a new favorite. I wrote a travel-food review post on food and wine from a trip to Napa Valley when I first started A Kitchen In Brooklyn, that was a lot of fun to write. I love writing about food and travel, which means that I need to work out ways to take more vacations!

On the recipe side, my current favorites this week are my chocolate raspberry soufflĂ©, a post on Marcus Samuelsson’s mini meatballs, and my sushi cupcakes post (cupcakes crafted by me to look like sushi!). Painting the fondant on that last post was so fun! These were all great fun to write up.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

I hope that I will continue improving my photography and food presentation skills. I would love for my blog readership (still very young) to continue to increase and for my blog to become a place where people frequently comment and ask questions about cooking and anything food related. I hope to have more readers to share our recipes with each day.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

Thanks to Meghan for this amazing opportunity to reflect on blogging, food and cooking. I have really enjoyed reading TravelEatLove, which makes me hungry for more travel and food experiences abroad.

I am amazed at what a rewarding opportunity blogging has been since the beginning. I never thought I would be much of a blogger, but it turns out that I have such a passion for writing, cooking and food that it is perfect and I have become a very prolific blogger. It’s great to do what I love each day and share it to help others cook at home too.

All good things must come to an end, and our few day holiday in Napa and Sonoma ended far too quickly. After we left Castello di amorosa, we had a bit of extra time before heading to lunch at the CIA Greystone Wine Spectator restaurant so we stopped at the lovely Freemark Abbey to share a tasting. image

We got a good shot of this welcoming sign along the way. “Welcome to this world famous wine growing region Napa Valley. . . and the wine is bottled poetry.” Oh Napa, I love you.

Freemark Abbey is not what you would expect from the name. It has a long and interesting history, beginning in1886 with Josephine Marlin Tychson, the first woman who owned and operated a winery in California. It is not an abbey at all; the name comes from the three businessmen who reopened it after Prohibition. The tasting room staff was very knowledgeable about the winery’s history (which can be found here). They were also incredibly friendly and interested in sharing their wines. We were starting to feel a bit pressed for time because we were not sure how far away lunch was, but I could have listened much longer. Its hard to imagine being out in Napa back in the early 1900’s and its fun to listen to people who know and care so much about the wine and its history. Anyway, we did a tasting, and we also inquired about a bottle of 1980 Cabernet Sauvignon that they had in their display case. You see, I have been looking for a birth year wine, and it was cool to finally see one up close. They actually had someone come upstairs to talk with us about it. To give us an idea of how the wines age, he gave us a taste of one of their library wines, a 1995 Cab. I liked it. He recommended that if we were to buy an ‘80 bottle, that we go with a BoschĂ©. We didn’t buy right then, but we are definitely considering trying to get our hands on a bottle to celebrate my big 30. In addition to the ‘95, we also tasted and enjoyed the 2001 Cabernet Franc and a 2008 Napa Valley Viognier, which was chock full of ripe melon and peach flavors, a summer day on the palate. We had to leave Freemark Abbey all too soon which gives us ample reason to return. It is located in the heart of things in St. Helena, surrounded by a gazillion, yes a gazillion wineries. In addition to tastings, they offer a wine and cheese pairing Our lunch at the Wine Spectator Restaurant was nothing short of spectacular. I am writing a post on it which may be a guest post elsewhere. If not, you will see it here soon. 😉 After lunch, we knew we had to slowly make our way back to San Francisco for our late night flight, but I REALLY wanted to go to St. SupĂ©ry. At this point, we were stuffed, and to be honest, my mouth hurt from tasting wine, but WE WERE GOING TO ST. SUPÉRY. We drove up the lovely driveway past this cute little house.

Upon entering the main building, we were welcomed and told that we were free to roam about, following a self-guided tour of sorts. There was some very neat art.

St. SupĂ©ry’s upstairs area gives you a great view of the tanks and crushpad along with a few other interesting wine education tools.

It was interesting to see this grape tree (?) stretching down into the rocky soil. We also visited the “smell-a-vision” area of the winery where, by pushing different tubes and smelling, you can get different scents that make up the nose of certain types of wine. It can often be difficult to smell the same things that the experts do, and the smell-a-vision area really helped to showcase certain scents. It is a brilliant idea and fun for novices and experts alike.

We finally made our way down to the tasting room, where we looked around and ended up deciding to make St. SupĂ©ry the first tasting we do the next time we come to California. In the meantime, we are looking to add a 2005 Dollarhide Cabernet Sauvignon to our collection. Karena from Run Beans Run said that their Sauvignon Blanc is a must try, and since I just found out that she is a fellow Jersey girl at heart, I will have to follow her recommendation. After leaving St. SupĂ©ry we found Buffalo’s Shipping Post, a shipping store we found through a brochure from Chateau Montelena. What. a. find.  You can travel around wine country, buying wine til your heart’s desire, then bring it all here and have it shipped to you at once, rather than buying and shipping from each winery. They specialize in wine country shipping, and after less than a week, our wine arrive in New Jersey at my mom’s today. The cost and method depends on your state laws. We were unable to ship less than a case to MA without paying a whole lot of money, so next time we will definitely just fill a case. Its uhh more economical, of course. 😉 I planned on this being my last post from our San Francisco/wine country/Foodbuzz trip, it is getting long and there is sushi and one last winery to write about. I will end it here, and the next time I am blogging, it will be from a hotel in San Diego, hopefully with TV, PJ’s, room service, and alone time.
