Brunch is one of the best meals of the week, and this past Sunday, after waking up late and lolling around the house, we decided to eat at Sensing at the Fairmont Battery Wharf. We had only eaten at Sensing once before, for lunch last 4th of July, and after a great lunch experience, I was looking forward to brunch by the bay.

For a city that has so much water, Boston severely lacks in waterfront dining options, don’t you think?

Boston Harbor

Sensing’s outdoor patio has a great view of the harbor, and we were gratefully seated in the shade so that we were able to enjoy the beautiful day without baking in the sun. The restaurant manager seated us and served us for most of the meal; the service was absolute perfection.

I started with an extra spicy Bloody Mary, just how I like them. See all that horseradish floating around? Yum!

While we were sipping our drinks, we also nibbled on flaky scones topped with apple butter.

I took this photo of the condiments because they looked so perfect. . . and they are usually a pretty big part of my meal!

And then my brunch arrived, the Coast Guard Omelet, with brie, asparagus, and lobster, oh my. With a stuffed tomato, home fries, carrots, and asparagus on the side, it was a completely indulgent breakfast but still with a lot of nutrition.

The lobster was perfectly cooked, not a chewy bit, and the brie was ooey-gooey and melty.

My husband had the lobster roll which we shared at our last meal at Sensing, and once again it was perfect. The brioche roll makes it extra delicious.

Stuffed, we left to wander down along the waterfront and through the St. Anthony Feast going on in the North End. Other than getting yelled at for taking a photo (of something I was going to buy!) by a child working in the chocolate dipped fruit booth, the feast was enjoyable but a little too crowded for a day that was in the high 80’s. I didn’t buy the chocolate covered apple after the boy yelled at me. Hmph to him.

North End Boston

As a blogger, have you ever gotten yelled at for taking a photo? I was yelled at once before in Lush of all places.

Cape Cod embodies much of what I love about New England. From its picturesque villages and towns to its stunning dunes and beaches to the great local food and friendly, laid back vibe it is truly a special place. And my favorite parts of the Cape are two that I get to return to as part of an annual tradition started years ago with old friends. Every summer we make the trek up to North Truro where we stay in a little cottage on Cape Cod Bay. The nearby town of Provincetown provides us with endless opportunities for eating, shopping, and sightseeing. Provincetown, with its open minded and artsy feel is an instant vacation, and truly one of my favorite places on earth.

Lots of prep work happens before the annual weekend, and one of my tasks was to get celebratory cupcakes. After trying Mix Bakery cupcakes at our blogger wine tasting, I knew that there would be no better dessert than these cupcakes. Nothing I have tried in Boston can compare. After work on Friday, Kelly from Mix had strawberry cupcakes with vanilla butter cream perfection waiting for me.

We kicked off the trip on Saturday morning, and while I snacked on a cupcake, my friends had farmer’s market strawberries.

I also tried this Two Moms in the Raw granola bar which had an AWFUL aftertaste. Bleh.

Before we knew it, we were passing beachy cottages and rolling dunes and meeting up with our other friend, Deb, to head to the beach. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas, and we only had time to eat our Box Lunch sandwiches before the rain came down.

Rain at the beach can be lovely, and we spent the rest of the day food and wine shopping and relaxing.

While watching some USA vs England World Cup action, I sipped on a VitaCoco and a Sea Dog Blueberry ale.

Before we started our lobster feast, we toasted my friend Raija’s Masters graduation and Deb’s pregnancy (she had seltzer!) with bubbly from Gloria Ferrer, one of my favorite Sonoma wineries

Then it was time for food.

There was lobster and corn, lots of butter, and Segura Viudas cava followed by the magical Mix Bakery cupcakes. Cava and lobster make an excellent pair. 🙂

The night ended with us all dressed up and dancing in Provincetown.

It was the perfect way to burn off of all of the calories of deliciousness that we enjoyed all day!

Do you have a favorite summer tradition?

When I planned to go home to New Jersey over President’s Day weekend, it was because I hadn’t been home since Christmas and really wanted to be home for the long weekend. Due to my trips to Arizona, Ireland, and the Czech Republic, January was completely taken up, and when I got back I took a couple of weekends as breathers to catch up with things here in Boston.

When I realized it was Valentine’s Day weekend, I still really wanted to go, and not worrying about when we celebrated, the hubs urged me to stick with my plans.

I have to tell you that I LOVE Valentine’s Day. I love pink and red and chocolate and even though I love my family and husband every day, it is fun to have a day to pause and celebrate. I don’t understand why people hate Valentine’s Day so much. The same argument could be made for Thanksgiving, why do we need a day to be thankful, blah blah blah. I loved Valentine’s Day when I was single, when all of the other girls in the high school hallway nearly floated away on heart-shaped Mylar balloons, and I love it now.

Anyway, the weekend kicked off with a nice, quick drive to New Jersey and a pedicure with my sister. Loved the time with her, did NOT love the dirtiness of the Lookin Good Spa or the surliness of the front desk staff. Don’t go here.

After our pedicure, my mom, sister, brother in law, niece, and I went to Buzzy’s my favorite hometown restaurant. Its a very simple, down to earth place that serves great food and has friendly staff.

Sunday, I got to spend the entire day with the above mentioned family members. Trust me, I stopped often to reflect on how lucky I am to have people I love so much.

There was cupcake decorating.

And a delicious meal.

We also had lobster with butter, roasted potato wedges, and rolls. It was yummy, and best of all we were all at home. I prefer not to go to restaurants on holidays, so the hubs and I will celebrate the holiday belatedly sometime soon.

Did you celebrate Valentine’s Day or do you avoid it? <3
