The December holiday season is definitely a favorite of mine and a great time to do something a little extra special.  In past years I have reunited with college friends over fancy afternoon tea at the Boston Harbor Hotel; not having seen each other for awhile this year, we decided to meet for bubbly at The Reserve, the new Champagne bar at the Langham Hotel.

Reserve Champagne Bar

Upon entering The Reserve, which is part of the newly redesigned hotel lobby, I was surprised at the drastically different décor from the old hotel. The Langham’s new atmosphere is chic and modern with traditional touches. It’s plush, luxurious, yet muted. It contains a Champagne bar; I am in love.

Over the course of the afternoon, we enjoyed sparkling wine (the Champagne is a wee bit pricey; for a special occasion I would spring for it), a Cremant from Louis Bouillot and sparkling pink bubbles from Roederer Estate in California, a place we visited on one of the most beautiful drives ever. We were provided some nuts and cheese crackers to nibble on while we sipped and sat back, and we also ordered the house-made potato chips with dips. I remembered how much I loved the chips when I had a luxury dining experience at Bond a few months ago; I could not stop eating them!

Whether you visit the Langham for brunch, the chocolate bar, cocktails at Bond, or glasses of bubbly at The Reserve, the experience is always second-to-none and sure to impress, from the service to the food and drinks, all the way through.

I was so glad we made time to relax at The Reserve and would most definitely spend a Sunday afternoon there again. It’s definitely one of those places where life slows down, and you can sit back and think about how good it is.

Cheers!

It has already been a week since I had the great pleasure of enjoying a preview of the Langham Hotel’s Chocolate Bar and City Brunch for the fall and winter ahead. I have attended both in the past, visiting the Chocolate Bar several times with friends, and enjoyed an immense, delicious, brunch experience. As a result, you can imagine that I was excited to be able to have a sneak peek. . . and lots of bites of what you can expect if you visit the Langham anytime soon. Hint, decadence, luxury, and elegance. And deliciousness.

The Chocolate Bar and brunch preview were in an event space off of Café Fleuri, where the actual public events take place. Upon entering the room, I took in the surroundings, high ceilings, rich fabric, antique furnishings, and a long table filled with beautifully displayed food. sparkling wine

Once I took everything in, the food, the jazz band, and my fellow bloggers, I headed up to the bar and ordered a glass of sparkling wine. Dessert martinis and Bloody Marys were being served, but I decided to stay with something a little simpler, given my plan of attack for the Chocolate Bar and brunch.

Then I started in on food. I browsed the Chocolate Bar desserts before deciding to have brunch first. Brunch offerings at the Langham are greatly varied, and we got to sample some fresh sushi and shrimp cocktail/Bloody Mary shooters.

My photos came out really dark, as you can see, but I ate much more than this! Just as it was one of my favorites back at brunch in January, roasted beets with goat cheese and a Marcona almond drew me in. Perfection in a little cup. This time around I also sampled some maple cured salmon, a bite of salty, sweet, tender salmon perfection, and my favorite, a rich New England cheese pie, accompanied by little grapes. With all of the options, I could have easily stopped at sampling brunch, but I made my way to the Chocolate Bar side, having a very hard time deciding what to start with as I headed over.

There were caramel pistachio mousse tortes, mango white chocolate chili parfaits, macarons, vegan cakes,  and much, much more.

But far above all of those delectable offerings stood these little bites. I didn’t write down the exact name, but they were a chocolate and pumpkin torte. The pumpkin was subtle, but present, and the bottom layer was a crunchy, chewy, chocolate-y crust that made the smoother top layers pop in contrast. It was a beautiful combination of textures and flavors, and the perfect dessert for this time of year.

I wish my photos had come out better; I took a ton of them, but the light was delightfully dim, nice for relaxing, not ideal for photography. This was a great event and made me excited for fun, decadent eating events this winter and fall. The Chocolate Bar is a great girls’ afternoon out, and the Langham’s brunch is great for a special occasion, staycation, or for visiting guests.

I attended this event free of charge, but my opinions are my own.

We brunched and brunched. And then brunched some more. Because that is precisely what Boston Brunchers do. For the January Boston Brunchers brunch, the brunchers paired up with the Langham Hotel for a contest. Each of the lucky Boston food blogger winners won a seat at the Langham Hotel’s luxurious City Brunch. A detailed menu can be found here.

Where to begin?

Cafe Fleuri at the Langham Hotel

Immediately after arriving in the beautiful lobby of the Langham Hotel in Boston’s Financial District, I heard the sounds of live jazz music making their way down the stairs from Café Fleuri. I met up with fellow brunchers Daisy, Megan, Emily, Melissa, Justin, Renee, and Lara near the bottom of the stairs. Did we know what we were in for? There was only one way to find out.

As we ascended the stairs, smells of roast coffee filled the air, and Langham Hotel brunch cocktail menus provided stronger options like the Hot in the City Bloody Mary.

I went the Venetian route with a peach bellini, bubbles and sweet peach the aperitif I needed to prep me for an indulgent brunch Odyssey.

And so the journey began. Round and round the room we went first just snapping photos and marveling at the wonders before us.

And around to bright, summery fruits and a world of cheese

And an elegant beef carpaccio

Sweet visions tried to disarm us around every corner.

And treats from the sea beckoned brunchers to sail away to Neptune’s lair.

The temptations were many.

Though dared, I could not face my fear of the chocolate fountain (after an unfortunate incident involving a chocolate fountain and a piece of pineapple getting stuck at a conference years back).

So I made my way from the brunch wonderland to the safety of my table and my fellow brunchers.

Round 1- shrimp cocktail, crab salad, bean and tomato salad, and a tasty egg

I caught Daisy as she bravely juggled multiple plates on her own return from the brunch buffet wilds.

Round 2- roasted beets, Lake’s End goat cheese, Marcona Almond

Also known as my favorite dish of the day

Also a favorite, Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon and chive hollandaise

Megan and I wondered at how, with so many eggs to make, the chef managed to cook these to sunny, runny perfection.

Just when it seemed it couldn’t get any better, and seemingly out of nowhere, a beignet fairy visited our table, depositing warm, sweet, cinnamon-y, beignets for all.

But still we weren’t done! Still lured by the East Coast Catches, I delighted in briny oysters, a bite of sushi, and perhaps the best smoked salmon in all the land, smoked and maple cured in-house.

There was room for just one more. . . one more plate that is. Beguiled by sweets on every table, I could not escape without a few bites, chocolate dipped strawberries and chocolate croissant bread pudding.

For as much ground as I covered, I didn’t visit nearly all of the corners of the beautiful brunch universe that the Langham Hotel has put together.

Truly a paradise for all of the senses, our brunch journey brought together brunchers from Somerville to Dorchester and beyond all with one mission, to brunch until we couldn’t brunch any more. And we did.

Everyone at the Langham Hotel was wonderful and welcoming, and I can’t thank them enough for so generously hosting us. My brunch was provided compliments of the Langham, but that aside, I would absolutely recommend their City Brunch, especially for a special occasion like a shower or reunion.

After looking at my Langham brunch photos, the mister and I decided that an overnight stay-cation at the hotel, followed by City Brunch, might just be the perfect late-winter pick-me-up. Stay tuned!

What is your favorite brunch item? Do you go for salty/savory or sweet?
