What do you get when you mix a bunch of Boston bloggers, Healthworks, Whole Foods, Joos, Mix Bakery cupcakes, and a beautiful summer evening?

A fabulous blogger picnic, of course!

The great people at Healthworks organized another fun blogger event for all of us food and fitness bloggers to get together to enjoy some healthy food and conversation. The group first met up at Healthworks for a Bosu class which I unfortunately missed due to a meeting. (But don’t worry, I did my workout at lunch, and it saved me from a horrific day. It’s amazing how even the smell of Healthworks calms me down!)

Then we grabbed bagged picnic dinners provided by Whole Foods Market and headed out to Copley Square. We learned a little bit about Whole Foods’ Health Starts Here initiative  to help people move toward a plant-strong, nutrient dense, whole food diet with healthy fats.

Whole Foods reps Whole Foods Health Stops Here

I dove into a delicious avocado sandwich on sprouted grain bread. It was so hearty and filling! I also had some quinoa salad with cranberries and oranges and a bowl of fruit salad, another reminder how delicious whole, real food is. It was so nice to eat in the grass, it really felt like summer!

Whole Foods picnic

While we were eating, Laurie and Marisa from Joos passed out samples of their fresh and vital juice. You may remember I tried this at the CRAVE Boston event awhile back and loved it. I need more veggie juice in my life! I may even be thinking about a Joos cleanse. . . stay tuned.

bloggers

Some of my favorite bloggers were in attendance, We are not Martha, Healthy and Sane, The Daily Craic, Fitarella, and Crunches for Cupcakes (and lots of other wonderful bloggers, once the list is emailed I will update!).

Copley Square

After dinner and Joos, there was the piece de resistance, Mix Bakery Cupcakes. If you read about my Boston Wine Exchange wine tasting or about my early summer Cape trip, you will know I am a Mix Bakery devotee. I am not exaggerating when I say these are the best cupcakes I have ever had. They bring the perfect ratio of frosting to cake, and the frosting is not too sweet at all. Last night Kelly brought peanut butter cup cupcakes and naked carrot cake, no raisins or nuts, just the way I like it.

These are so perfectly flavored and high quality that 2 mini cupcakes were enough to make my sweet tooth happy without making me feel too full. I love mini cupcakes!

A summer picnic with a bunch of wonderful women eating delicious food, does it get any better? Thanks so much to Whole Foods, Joos, Mix Bakery, and of course, Judith and Hannah from Healthworks for making my day a million times better. What a great community!

Random question: what would your dream cupcake combination be?

It was on a visit to Iceland last year that I first discovered Skyr, a delicious and creamy thick yogurt. Wikipedia says the following about Skyr:

Skyr is an Icelandic cultured dairy product, similar to strained yogurt. Technically it is a very soft cheese.

Since I have forever been a fan of more natural European yogurt over the typical overly sweetened American varieties of my youth, I spent our days in Iceland excitedly eating Skyr a few times a day. Hey, it’s the little things! 😉

Fast forward a year after our trip when I am scanning the yogurt selection at Whole Foods and see the clean, sophisticated little cups of Siggi’s yogurt in flavors completely unique to your usual yogurt scene.

Since then, I have tried Siggi’s vanilla, plain, and orange & ginger yogurts, the orange & ginger being my favorite because of its tangy citrus flavor and a hint of gingery spice. Somehow, Siggi’s makes something that is incredibly rich and filling completely fat free. . .with 16-17 grams of protein per container. Siggi’s is all natural and made from milk that comes from grass fed, hormone free cows.

Being a fan of the yogurt, I was more than a little excited when Judith from Healthworks invited me to meet Siggi himself! A yogurt celebrity at my gym? I was there!

Siggi's Icelandic Style Skyr Yogurt

Healthworks and Siggi’s teamed up to give out some free samples and coupons, and I of course took them up on their offer! I will be having a blueberry Siggi’s for breakfast this morning.

The best part, of course, was meeting Siggi himself. I was surprised at how young he is! I am not sure why, but I pictured him to be much older.

It turns out that he and Judith were born on the exact same day, same year and everything!

Siggi from Siggi's and Judith from Healthworks

I enjoyed the opportunity to chat with Siggi about Iceland, yogurt, eating habits of Americans and my blog. He was so nice and kindly gave me some coupons for free yogurt which I will be sharing with you at the end of this post. But first a summery soup recipe using Siggi’s yogurt:

With yogurt on the brain and a bunch of carrots past their salad prime, I decided to come up with a cold soup recipe utilizing plain yogurt as the base. Siggi’s would work great, as would any thick, plain yogurt.

Chilled Spicy Carrot Soup Ingredients:

8 large carrots, chopped into small pieces

1/4 cup red onion, chopped into small pieces

4 cloves garlic

3 TBSP Olive Oil

2 cups yogurt

1 cup organic vegetable stock

1 TSP each, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, and chili powder

sea salt to taste

Coat the carrots, whole garlic cloves, and onion in olive oil and toss with cinnamon, cumin, chili powder, and pepper. Roast at 400 degrees until the carrots are soft. If the garlic looks too brown, remove it early and set aside. Burnt garlic is the worst!

carrots, garlic, onion

Once the veggies are cooked, set them aside to cool for about 20 minutes, then toss in the food processor and puree until completely smooth. Allow to cool for another 20 minutes; if you are in a rush pop the bowl in the freezer for a few minutes. Once it is fully cool, stir in the yogurt until the mix is completely combined. At this point, give it a taste. It will be thick, but you may like it just the way it is. If you prefer to thin it a bit, stream in vegetable stock and stir until the soup has reached the consistency you desire.

cold spicy carrot soup

I loved how creamy and cold this soup was, and the spices I used complimented the sweet carrots well. I will definitely be making this again, maybe with butternut squash in the fall.

Because of the thickness of the yogurt and sheer volume of carrots, this was a VERY filling soup. Next time I would serve a very small portion as an appetizer or eat this as a light meal on its own.

Now time for a little giveaway. Three lucky Travel, Eat, Love readers will win 2 coupons each for 2 free Siggi’s yogurts.

All you have to do is visit Siggi’s website, leave a comment on this post telling me which flavor/s you would buy if you won, and link back to this giveaway if you have a blog. If you don’t have a blog, link back on Facebook or Twitter.

Thanks Judith and Healthworks for yet another really cool opportunity!

Have I told you lately that I belong to a fantastic gym? I don’t even need to work out. . . and I really haven’t since the marathon. Really I bring my workout clothes, and I end up in the sauna and that’s it. I promise a return to regular exercise and eating soon, but for the moment I am having too much fun. Last night’s Healthworks  fun was had at the Boston Wine Exchange, a brilliant store in the Financial District. You may remember that I visited a little over a month ago.

Boston Wine Exchange

Judith, who organizes the Healthworks events, does such a great job of engaging gym members, um, even those of us who don’t work out very often. I almost missed this event, but when I saw Tina at Bin Ends, she mentioned it,and I was lucky to get a spot. The Boston Wine Exchange  has a wine tasting machine that allows you to try 8 wines which is more than helpful in making purchasing decisions.  And they have quite the tasting schedule on offer. They also have great prices for wine, beer, and liquor, especially for the location.

A great wine selection

Boston Wine Exchange

We had an informative introduction to our tasting and started with a Liberty School Chardonnay. As you might know, I am not always a Chard fan, but this was not too oaky, easy to drink, and just delicious. The Liberty School Cab was incredible as well, lots of cherry berry flavors, and ideal for a weeknight for its price point.

Tasting Liberty School Chardonnay

We also enjoyed the Austin Hope Syrah, a little pricier, but completely worth it for its  lush flavor and richness.  I am fairly obviously obsessed with Napa and Sonoma, but these wines were from the Paso Robles wine region of California, and they made me think that I need to plan a Paso Robles trip soon!

The highlight of a visit to Boston Wine Exchange is the wine tasting machines. Once we tried a few wines with the very knowledgeable wine reps, we were left to our own devices with the tasting machines. Muahahaha. No really, a bunch of women with full access to 8 wines. Fabulous. Eamon, the owner of Boston Wine Exchange, is a bit of a risk taker apparently. . .;)

Boston Wine Exchange Tasting Machines

I enjoyed spending time with Tina and Mellissa who was one of my running buddies during my marathon training. As much as I love running, I really enjoy other activities with my running friends!

Thank you, Healthworks and Boston Wine Exchange for the opportunity to try some delicious wines while meeting new friends. I took full advantage of the Veuve Cliquot sale at Boston Wine Exchange as I feel like I may have something to celebrate soon. I also bought a recommendation, Dark Horse Brewing Company IPA which was a hit with my husband and a good Lost-watching beer. I look forward to returning to this store very soon and to attending more Healthworks events in the future. Oh yeah, and exercising. Yeah. That.

What is your favorite ever spring wine, beer, or cocktail?
