Bonjour everyone!
I’m Jennifer from over at A Knack for Nutrition,  and I am filling in for Meghan while she is away. My blog is my home away from home where I share with my readers my version of the college lifestyle. It is a unique balance of healthy food, exercise, and my experiences from never living in one place too long. When I began blogging six months ago, I was at a pivotal point in my college career. Long gone were the days of qualifying travel as flying between school in upstate New York and home in Arkansas. This year, I spent a semester living, working, and eating my way (hello Trader Joe’s!) through Washington, D.C.

A Knack for Nutrition
(That’s me!)
My time in the nations capitol was a blast, but could not begin to prepare me for what came next. These days I am living abroad in Strasbourg, France trying to understand what people are saying to me in French all while soaking in all that Alsatian culture has to offer.

Living abroad has been one of the most profound things I have ever done. The experience as a whole is completely life changing and highly amusing all at the same time. I am living with a host mom while here who is responsible for 14 of my meals each week. She speaks pretty much no English, and although I have studied French at my university, I am by no means fluent. We have had our share of miscommunication, but it is nothing that could not be resolved over pain et beurre.

pain et beurre

Oh, have I not mentioned the amount of bread consumed in this country yet? For shame, because those stereotypes you hear about are definitely true. My host mom always has a selection of fresh bread on the table for me. She buys a different loaf each time to allow me “to taste the Alsatian way of life!”

bread

Beyond her (and every other French citizen) love of bread, she makes some pretty legitimate meals.

I am never going to go hungry here that is for sure.

Good thing staying active comes pretty naturally to me to counter the bread overload, or I would be in some serious trouble.

Whether it be hiking through Baden-Baden, Germany. . .

or biking 50 miles into a new region of France. . .

River Ile

or running along the River Ile, there is no easier way to be motivated then to have the opportunity to explore a new part of the world!

Overall, Strasbourg is a pretty cool city to call home to for six weeks. Feel free to stop by my blog anytime to see what else I have been up to since moving here. Thanks again Meghan for letting me drop in and say hello to all of your readers! It’s been real!

Au Revoir,
Jenn

TGIF everyone! Are you ready for the weekend? I am ready to be on a Provincetown beach and later eating lobster and drinking wine, yes I am. This has not been my favorite week ever, so let’s hope that the weekend makes up for it!

Today I am SO excited to feature a wine writer as my Friday Foodie Feature. I have been looking to add more wine to my blog, and Mark from WineLife 365 is one of my favorites. His responses to the Friday Foodie Feature interview are funny and honest, and Mark’s site offers great wine reviews, events, and other wine related fun, so definitely check it out.

Thanks, Mark! 🙂

How long have you been blogging?

I started WineLife365.com in January 2009.  However, I must admit that my desire to start a blog began during the summer of 2007.  When I first mentioned the idea to my wife, she told me that I was coo coo for cocoa puffs…and I still have the email to prove it!  I’m not quite sure what she thinks of my state of mind now, but she hasn’t kicked me to the curb yet!

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?

I genuinely appreciate all of the comments and interaction that I’ve had with so many great people.  It’s an amazing thing to meet people from all walks of life that share the same passion!  But if I have to pick something specific that is a favorite of mine, its doing contests/giveaways on my FaceBook page!  I would love to do at least one per week if I could.  It’s great to get samples or invitations to events, but it’s even better to share them!

My least favorite thing about blogging is experiencing “technical difficulties”.  It’s challenging enough coming up with engaging and thoughtful material, the last thing I want to deal with is trying to figure out why my computer is experiencing a complete meltdown, why my camera isn’t working, or why I can’t get any computer time in my house.  Two desktops and a laptop, yet it seems as if they are always being monopolized by my wife, kids or cats!  Ok – maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but thank goodness for a notebook and pen!

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

That’s an easy one to answer.  I’m a goofy goober at heart and I love injecting a little humor whenever possible into each post that I write.  My absolute favorite blog post to date has been “Germans are the Best”.  It was an “epic” blog post of sorts that combined elements of everything I love – family, friends, food, wine and storytelling.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

I’ll be completely honest with you – I have no clue.  My plan is to continue to grow, meet new people, and learn new things that I can share with others, all while keeping things light, fun, and approachable.  I hope WineLife365.com is a reflection of this and that people will continue to visit and share their thoughts and experiences.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

Yes.  It’s a whole lot of work!  Before I started, I truly had no idea how much work it would be.  Besides trying to come up with interesting content, most bloggers spend an enormous amount of time designing and updating their website, or doing things behind the scenes to try and drive traffic to their site.  I’ve learned so much in a year and a half.  How naïve I was to think that I would just start writing and people would find me!  There’s so much to do if you’re looking for more than an alternate medium for “talking to yourself”.  🙂  Unfortunately, the technical things I just mentioned posed a problem for me:  I don’t have the patience for it and I’m really not interested in doing it.  Fortunately, my wife is the yin to my yang – she loves all of the technical aspects of blogging, but hates writing.  With that said, having a tech wiz who happens to be your best friend, spouse, mother to your children, in addition to being 100% supportive is a pretty amazing thing.  Without her hard work, my WineLife365 dream would not be possible!

First things first. Have you entered my Honest Tea giveaway? You can enter to win an entire case of a variety of Honest Tea flavors, so check it out!

It has been a good week for the bloggy with my first Foodgawker acceptance (followed by a dozen rejections!), my first Foodbuzz Top 9, and some fun giveaways in the works. I love a good blog week!

Otherwise, I have been dragging. I think it’s just the weather which is past due for some warmth and sunshine. It is promised to be in the 70’s for the weekend, and I can not wait, not to mention that I have 2 great wine events and a possible food event coming up this week. TGIF!

Today’s foodie feature, Erin from Travel Eat Repeat is a girl after my own heart. She has an awesome travel and living abroad background and shares my goal of eating her way around the world and telling everyone about it! Erin’s blog is so much fun, and it is really just a breath of fresh air to read. I love checking it out every day, and I can’t wait to see what adventures she finds stateside!

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been blogging since October 2007, when I started my blog (then called Postcards From the World) to keep in touch with friends and family back home while studying abroad in London. It wasn’t something I started doing regularly until I moved to South Korea in September 2008. Suddenly, blogging was a fantastic way to record my day-to-day life in Seoul and share that experience with others, too.

What is your favorite thing about blogging? Least favorite?

I love meeting new people–both in person and on-line–and realizing how many shared interests we have. Blogging has also introduced me to new recipes, cool products and created a fantastic Internet network of liked-minded people. There’s nothing I don’t like about blogging, except maybe those days when absolutely nothing has happened and I feel like there’s nothing to say or blog about. Luckily those days are pretty rare. 😉

What has been your most fun blog post to write?

People really seemed to like the posts I wrote about traveling through Australia and New Zealand but my personal favorite was called “How to travel around the world without being rich.” By far the thing I get the most emails and comments about is “how do you travel so much?” so I was able to talk about my experience teaching in Korea and being budget-conscious.

Where do you see your blog this time next year?

My life is changing so much right now–settling down from traveling, searching for an apartment, interviewing for full-time jobs. I want my blog to reflect that and show what it’s like to be a single girl living in the city and exploring everything there is to do here.

Is there anything else about your blogging experience you would like to share?

I don’t keep a “traditional” food blog but that’s definitely the type of blog I read the most. It’s fun to do my own thing and I really encourage more people to start blogging, no matter what subject they want to write about. Thanks so much for this opportunity, Meghan!

Thank you, Erin, for sharing some of your adventures with us and especially for sharing this photo, which is no doubt the best photo to ever be posted on Travel Eat Love!
