Take me away to someplace warm and beautiful please! Away from crazy, insulting neighbor drama and snow and commuting in freezing rain and cancellations all over the place. Can we just make that happen, please?

Probably not, so amazing travel memories are the next best thing, I would say. I love poring through photos from all sorts of trips throughout the years and feeling the warm memories that come with them, even if they are from places like Galway, that can be chilly.
On the day of our engagement anniversary, after spending a long day in Connemara, we wandered into the center of Galway to see what was going on about town.

Cooke's Wine Bar, Galway

Ireland can be mild and lovely in the winter, but when it’s not, the cold gets right into your bones. On this evening, we realized we needed to duck into someplace warm for a little bit of food and wine, and we made our way to Cooke’s Wine Bar. I always laugh when we walk by Cooke’s because when I was a student in Galway, I lived just a couple of blocks away, but it was one of those nice places we didn’t go to, even though I always really wanted to. We would walk by it, coat-less of course, on the way to the nearby nightclub, freezing to avoid a one pound coat check fee, seeing all the grown-ups inside enjoying a nice dinner. Ten years later, I finally made it to Cooke’s!

romantic dining

Galway is a medieval city, and many of the buildings are old, like 1500’s old. Cooke’s is housed in a stone building and decorated inside with rich fabrics, antiques, and tall taper candles. It’s cozy and romantic, and it is a gorgeous, multi-level space that I would recommend exploring. The top floor, on a quiet night, however, was a wee bit creepy. So much history there! I love the candles, but I also have a history of accidental menu fires, so I was sure to steer clear.

Cooke’s might be in an old building, but the cuisine is fresh and new, incorporating the many cultures that have found their way to this beautiful little city.  The wine list is worth the trip alone; it’s not overwhelming like some places can be, but it is full of little gems. You could easily sip a rainy night away, chatting to locals and tourists and making new friends. As we ate, new diners came in to be seated, all saying hello and chatting a bit with us.

The menu was difficult to decide on. My cold hands needed some warming up, so I decided to go with the Moroccan Tagine
(
Spiced chickpeas, carrots and potatoes, served with mint infused couscous and topped with Greek yogurt).  I would usually pair a Sauvignon Blanc, un-oaked Chard, or Gruner with a dish like this, but I was all about being warm, so I had a Tempranillo instead, a gorgeous wine, but white definitely would have paired better.

This dish was so full of spices and flavor with just enough heat to warm me up. I needed vegetables after so many days of vacationing, and the veggies and couscous were more than enough for a hearty, healthy meal. I love this place.

This past weekend was a mix of fun and stress, ending on the stressful side, our home once again feeling like a hostile place we don’t want to be, thanks to other people’s lack of consideration. Writing this post reminded me what a fun little escape blogging can be and why I keep on doing it. Despite being really down last night, it was nice to be reminded how much this little blog has done for my life; I’ve met so many of you.  Thanks for reading. And can my awesome blogging community just be my new neighbors too? 🙂

If you were in a blizzard zone this weekend, how did you fare?

Last summer while lounging in the sunshine on the boat (oh how I can not wait for that again) and reading Wine Spectator, I discovered that The Twelve, a hotel outside of Galway city that we had passed many times, was listed as having one of the best wine lists in the world.

With Aer Lingus tickets already booked, I penciled a visit to The Twelve into our itinerary; I couldn’t miss out on this award-winning wine list!

The Twelve, Barna

One sunny afternoon after a walk on the Prom in Galway, we decided to drive along the coast to Barna to grab some lunch and to relax with a glass of wine.

When we arrived we took a little look around, decided it was way too cold to sit outside, and made our way into the stylish Pins Bar and Bistro.

The Twelve, Barna

The Twelve, Barna

You might be wondering about the hotel being called The Twelve and the bar and bistro being called Pins. . . or maybe not but I am going to tell you! Winking smile

Connemara in the West of Ireland is host to twelve mountains called pins or, in Irish, Bens. We spend as much time as possible taking in these mountains; they truly help to define Connemara and make it like no other place I have been.

The Twelve wine list

Our visit to Pins was on a bright and sunny but chilly day. Since they were featuring a beautiful French rose, I decided on that.

Since we had eaten yet another full Irish breakfast, we decided to share a couple of light menu items.

seafood sampler

{GALWAY SEAFOOD PLATE , Smoked Salmon, Joe’s Crab Meat, Sardines on Toast, Sundried Tomato Tapenade and Fine Greens}

Our lunch was a perfect example of new Irish cuisine; after years of being known for not-so-great food, Ireland is coming into its own and using the abundance of fresh ingredients they have year-round. Due to their moderate climate and to being surrounded by water, they definitely have some great ingredients to start with. These dishes were simple, clean, and light and paired absolutely perfectly with a big, comfy chair and a glass of wine.

Barna is a beautiful little stop outside of Galway city, and though there’s not a ton to do, I would definitely recommend heading out of Galway for lunch by the sea one day.  O’Grady’s on Barna Pier is pretty much the perfect place to come in out of the Irish rain and enjoy some award-winning seafood dishes. For a tiny town, Barna certainly offers some delicious dining options!

Ballyconneely

It’s a place in Ireland we visit on every single trip, the place we got engaged seven years ago, and one of my favorite spots in all of Connemara. Ballyconneely, just outside of Clifden, is one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches I have ever visited. The water, in places, is Caribbean-blue (but nowhere near as warm!), the sand, bleached-white in places and a golden yellow in others.

Ballyconneely Ireland

From every spot on Ballyconneely’s beaches, you can see green fields, the rocky 12 Pins or Bens, the mountains of Connemara, and endless sky.

Mannin Bay

When the sky is gray, as it often is in the West of Ireland, Mannin Bay and the surrounding landscape can match it; depending on your own mood, it can be soothing and serene or somber and a little bit too heavy. Being a lover of gray skies and rainy days, I am usually a big fan.

Ballyconneely

Ballyconneely goes back further than the seven years ago when we got engaged, even further back than the almost 10 years ago when my husband and I first visited there together. When my husband was a child, he and his family owned a caravan on the beach and spent weekends playing in the surf, wandering the surrounding hills to round up sheep, and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves lapping the shore. Does that not sound like a magical way to spend childhood summers?

Connemara

If you plan a trip to Ireland, I definitely recommend including Ballyconneely on your itinerary; it’s an easy day trip from Galway City and can be combined with a visit to Clifden, Kylemore Abbey, and Ballynahinch Castle. Many people are wooed away from the West by the metropolitan and better known sites of Dublin, but this is where the real Ireland shines through.
