It seems like our trip to Sanibel Island was ages ago, when it was really just a couple of weeks. So much fun has happened this summer, but the Sanibel trip, because I got to experience it with my family, will stand out always as one of the highlights of 2012. I miss them!

The second we decided to join them in Sanibel, I started doing some research on food and cocktails. . . obviously. One of the places that stood out to me on the island was Doc Fords Rum Bar and Grille. If Sanibel is all about the rum cocktails, who am I to say no?

After looking over lots of menus, my family kindly agreed to go to Doc Ford’s for our last dinner in Sanibel. On a very hot and humid evening after a gorgeous beach day, we arrived for an early dinner that gave us time after to view the Captiva sunset.

Doc Ford's Rum Bar

Doc Ford’s has a tropical themed entry with lots of overgrown trees and plants. We even saw a giant bird on a telephone, eating a freshly caught fish. Not part of the décor, but kind of interesting, nonetheless!

I wanted to stick to local food, so I started with a taste of Doc Ford’s hot sauce. We also shared a plate of buffalo shrimp, happily doused in said sauce.  I can not say no to buffalo shrimp.

Mojitos also happen to be a local favorite. I sampled a couple of the mango mojitos and, while they were good, Lin makes them better.

Vacation always leaves me feeling a need for veggies, so I started with the tropical salad: fresh baby greens, grape tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, mandarin oranges, sundried cherries, spiced pecans, homemade crispy onions tossed in our very own secret balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I devoured every bite, enjoying the freshness of the salad and the delicious dressing.

I also got my fill of peel and eat Gulf shrimp. This was the night we shared a bunch of plain shrimp with Old Bay and the amazing Yucatan shrimp that I later recreated. I do believe that shrimp are my favorite protein, so I was a happy camper to see them on the menu everywhere in Sanibel with all sorts of preparations.

Our last dinner in Sanibel was delightful, right down to the free ice cream sandwiches for the kids. Doc Ford’s, though a place with a great cocktail menu and local bar scene, is also a fun place for families.

Happy almost Friday!

Last year, we vowed to start taking more day trips around New England and the Boston area. That goal has helped us to discover some new-to-us places like World’s End (highly recommend), Wompatuck State Park,  and of course has brought us to our favorite local wineries.

Once the boat came into the picture, we started slacking on making new discoveries, trading being explorers in for lounging in the sun. This is not a bad thing, but I also don’t want to neglect all of the amazing things to see in the Boston area. This past weekend I really felt like buying some farm-fresh produce, and after some internet searching saw that Volante Farms in Needham was having a local food festival. We found that my mother-in-law would also be interested in going, and so began our whirlwind trip around Southern Massachusetts!

Volante Farms

Volante Farms was easy to get to, and it was bustling with activity when we arrived. Our first order of business was to check out the greenhouse plants. My mother-in-law is an avid gardener with a gorgeous array of roses and other plants in her backyard in Galway. It’s a lush, green oasis, complete with a little glass house. Since it rains so much in Ireland, many people have glass houses, similar to greenhouses, to sit in. Even when it’s pouring and cold outside, you can have a glass of wine in the glass house and enjoy the outdoors.

Volante Farms had some really stunning flowers and even offered ideas for creating window boxes. I love the pink window below; I could see it on my dream beach cottage.

In the greenhouse, we also got to see the beginnings of various types of lettuce and greens. We spend so much time in chain grocery stores; it’s nice to be back at the roots of our food.

In addition to the greenhouse, Volante Farms has a vast space in the back of the building where all sorts of deliciousness grows.

When we had enough of the greenhouse heat, we wandered inside the farm store to do some shopping and tasting at the local food festival. I loaded up on beets, which we later ate with some crumbled goat cheese. So simple, so good.

I wanted to buy a bushel of peaches, but more than that I want to go peach picking, so I held off on these.

Since it was so hot, I sought out the ice cream vendors at the food festival.

Chilly Cow

The Chilly Cow was dishing out pie and ice cream samples.

And I tasted the most refreshing grapefruit sorbet from Giovanna Gelato. Of course, my first thought was how good a little bit of gin would be in the sorbet.

I also sampled this high-fiber Oat Works drink. It was really tasty with bright flavors of mango and peach and just a hint of oat flavor. I put oats in my smoothies and enjoy it, so I knew I would like this. Oat Works drinks are perfect for someone on the go and would be really helpful in preventing the scary sugar crashes I tend to have when I miss a snack.

There were about 20 other vendors at the local food festival, but since it was quite hot, we cut our visit short and headed to Westport. We were really impressed with Volante Farms and their selection of homegrown produce, homemade products (The sweet and spicy pickles!), and other local products. It seems like they make a huge effort to sell products made by local producers in addition to their own items, and I love that community support. The prices were also really great, much of the meat, cheese, and produce cheaper than  regular store.

Do you change up your food shopping this time of year to buy more produce and local items?

If we went out to dinner every night of the year, perhaps we could eat at all of the restaurants in the Boston area that we want to try. While our waistlines and budget deny us that frequency of dining out, we definitely do love to try new restaurants whenever we get the chance.

Birthdays are the perfect excuse for going out, and last week my husband decided he wanted to give Erbaluce in Boston’s Bay Village a try. While he often chooses a steak dinner for his birthday, this year the heat swayed his decision, and I was secretly glad. (Though I do love a nice steak house martini and lots of veggie sides!)

Erbaluce

I had an idea of where Erbaluce was located, but I was kind of surprised to see just how close it was to other places I had frequented, like Legal Seafoods and MJ O’Connor’s in Park Square, where I worked for over two years. I walked past Erbaluce many times and never saw it!

Bay Village

It is absolutely charming, housed in a brick building with overgrown, bright flowers adding to the homey, cozy feeling of the space. Inside is just as cozy, with a small bar and two small dining rooms. It was so quiet and romantic, in fact, that I decided I did not want to take photos inside and risk interrupting anyone else’s meal. I grabbed a glass of Tenuta Santome Prosecco and waited for my husband at the bar. I loved this Prosecco; instead of having really forward pear and apple flavors like some Prosecco tends to have, it reminded me more of Champagne, with a toasty nose and flavors of brioche, vanilla, and lemon curd.

Erbaluce

All was well until a big group with a toddler walked in. The staff at Erbaluce was more than accommodating, but it just doesn’t seem like the place for a child. I definitely didn’t expect to have people constantly wandering around the dining room chasing after a little one!

sunflower appetizer

Once we got past our surprise, we settled in to enjoy some fabulous food, wine, and service. The menu featured many options that we both wanted, and in the end we were so happy with our choices. Above is the sunflower appetizer that we shared, too pretty not to photograph. It is literally the head of a sunflower with the seeds removed. It was topped with ricotta, bread crumbs, and a delicious dressing, surrounded by sunflower petals which taste just like carrots. This was a fun way to start the meal and paired nicely with my Sicilian white, Maggio Vini Inzolia “Pithoi”. I want to go to Sicily SO badly!

For dinner I went with the bluefish, always a favorite fish of mine, and here it was cooked perfectly with a beautiful sauce that included mustard. My husband had the boar ragu and pasta. We polished both plates clean.

When it was time for dessert, we thought about going home to enjoy the cake and fruit sent by family, but when we saw a honey panna cotta, we really wanted to give it a try. Erbaluce also surprised us with their signature cherry chocolate mousse and a candle to cap off the celebrations. The panna cotta was silky and lightly sweetened while the mousse was very rich and flavorful. I loved both; next time I would save more space so that I could finish them!

Panna cotta

A strong Arabic coffee infused with cardamom finished off the night and somehow didn’t keep me awake. Every morsel and sip of this meal was perfection.

Erbaluce (minus one toddler) is the perfect date night spot, quiet, romantic, with a menu that changes frequently, tons of seasonal specials, and food that is crafted like art. The wine list, all Italian wines, is impressive as well. I can’t wait to return, maybe for our August anniversary.
