Did you know that the Financial District restaurant Nix’s Mate is actually named after a tiny Boston Harbor Island of the same name?

The island Nix’s Mate has an interesting history, one that involves pirates (arrrrrrr), including pirate chief, William Fly. The restaurant Nix’s Mate happens to have a private dining area named after Fly. Fly, along with two other pirates, is buried on Nix’s Mate, the island, which appears and disappears with the tide. Being a lover of the sea and the islands, I thought the restaurant concept was pretty cool, and I was excited when Lin brought plans together for a bunch of Boston bloggers to have dinner there. My fun dining companions for the night included Daisy, Erica, Lin, Lisa, Megan, Meesh, and Jacki.

Nix's Mate

I arrived a little early to Nix’s Mate and decided to get out of the humidity and to have a cocktail. I instantly loved the restaurant’s décor. Light wood, high ceilings, lots of light, and my favorite, various shades of grey, give it a soothing, relaxed feel.

Nix’s Mate has a nice cocktail list, but what really jumped out to me was the Ginger Collins. (I’d also like to see them add a Champagne cocktail!). A friendly server took my order, and I was left to relax on one of the comfy leather couches by the window while I waited for the group to arrive. The lounge area is really a great space.

Candied ginger. . . yum! I can’t say that I loved this drink though. I was hoping it would have a kick of ginger spice, but it was overpowered by gin flavor. It was good, but not what I expected, and I don’t think I would order it again.

Ginger Collins

Once everyone arrived, we took our seats at a large, round table in the corner. Surrounded on two sides by big windows and lit from above by this cool chandelier, our table was a great space for group dining.

Nix's Mate

As food bloggers often do, we ordered a ton of small plates and shared them all.

bacon wrapped scallops

Bacon-wrapped scallop skewers, maple butter – I thought that these scallops, while deliciously salty and sweet, were a little on the small side, and I definitely wished that there were more on the plate since they were so good.

veal cheek

Braised Veal Cheek “POT AU FEU” Roasted baby vegetables, bone morrow – I actually didn’t try this, but the table seemed to like it. It looked like a nice dish for fall or winter and had a pretty, rustic presentation.

flatbread

Harbor Island Flatbread – Salami & pepperoni, tomato gravy, mozzarella, leeks, spicy fried rock shrimp – I really wanted to love this flatbread, but I thought it was pretty bland. The shrimp were standard fried shrimp, not spicy. The most flavor came from the pepperoni, which helped, but it didn’t really taste that different from a regular old pepperoni pizza.

fried lobster and caramel

Fried Maine Lobster Caramel! – Warm Vermont cheddar, green onions, chilis – Everyone raved about this dish. Fried lobster and caramel? It’s kind of difficult to even describe, but it was amazing. It’s worth visiting Nix’s Mate for this alone!

Boston Bibb Salad with Blackberries

Boston Bibb Salad – Pecans, blackberries, caramelized onion dressing, cornbread croutons – This was a nice, light, and fresh salad, and I love the blackberry and croutons. I didn’t notice much flavor in the dressing though, unfortunately. I love caramelized onions and dips/dressings made with them, and I hoped for that wonderfully sweet flavor.

We also shared the Tuna Carpaccio Nicoise and the Polpette Vignole (meatballs in clam sauce), and while the tuna was definitely a group favorite, I just didn’t find it very memorable. I did love the meatballs; they had a little bit of a kick, and I found the meatball and clam combination to be interesting.

Food bloggers pretty much always order dessert, so we decided to split four of the items on Nix’s Mate’s dessert menu. Dessert actually impressed more than dinner!

Bananas Foster Bread Pudding

Bananas Foster bread pudding – This was a table favorite. Bananas with crunchy caramel tops, toasted marshmallow, and brioche. Yum.

strawberry shortcake

For me, the prize for best dessert was a tie. I loved the abundance of strawberries and the buttery shortcake in the strawberry shortcake and the homemade cookies and ice cream in the ice cream sandwiches. The cookies were nice and soft, with chocolate chips giving a great texture.

ice cream sandwiches

The fourth dessert we ordered was a hazelnut chocolate torte which was too sweet for my taste buds.

Dinner with a group of food bloggers is always fun, and I am glad I had the chance to dine with this group. My feelings about Nix’s Mate are mixed. I’d love for them to jazz up their by-the-glass wine selection a little with some more interesting options. As far as the food goes, nothing was bad, it just seems like they might be playing it safe with seasonings and other flavors. It is a restaurant in a hotel, so that would make some sense. I think their hearts and minds are in the right place, and there is definitely creativity behind the menu and the space. I’d return for a cocktail at the bar and to try some of the other dishes on the menu that we missed. There are a lot of options!

Between my blog, conversations I have with friends and colleagues, and my appearance on Fox, I have probably said it a million times, but I will say it again. New Bedford, MA is a great little stop on a New England day trip. It’s not Provincetown or Portland, but it oozes with New England charm in its cobblestone streets, fishing boats, and whaling history. And it’s quickly becoming a place to wine and dine as well.

We wouldn’t have discovered New Bedford if it wasn’t for our love of Travessia Urban Winery wine, but we now visit at least a couple of times a year. On our most recent Southeastern MA excursion, we worked up our appetites tasting wine at Westport Rivers and Travessia, and we (really, I) desperately needed to eat by the time 6:00 rolled around.

I knew exactly where I wanted to go. Cork Wine and Tapas Bar, located right across from the shipyard, is a restaurant we have passed on our many New Bedford trips, but we had never stopped. We made a beeline from Travessia right to Cork for a fantastic wine and food experience.

Cork Wine & Tapas Bar

Talk about New England charm. Cork is in the Joseph Tabor building, which has stood proudly there since 1836. I learned from Cork’s website that the building was designed to be a warehouse to produce, house and maneuver large nautical equipment. It’s an impressive structure that now makes a great space for dining.

Cork’s menu is fresh and seasonal and offers small plates in addition to heartier options like fish and chips.

They also offer wine flights, something that I love in a restaurant. It was a wine-tasting kind of day, so I decided to go with a flight of bubbles. Surprise, surprise!

sparkling wine flight

Three glasses of sparkling wine were placed in front of me: Segura Viudas Reserva, Deor Prosecco, and Santa Julia Brut Rose. The Segura Viudas was the hands-down winner with me and the other  judges, my mother-in-law and husband. The Prosecco was just okay; while I am a fan of most bubbles, I don’t love the overwhelming pear flavor some Proseccos have. The Santa Julia Brut Rose was lovely, lots of strawberry and cherry flavors, and of course that gorgeous pink color.

While I am usually a fan of tapas style eating, I was pretty ravenous by the time we were ready to order, and I wanted one thing, Coconut Curry Lobster: Claw and knuckle lobster meat with scallions and grilled corn in curried coconut milk. Served over jasmine rice.

To.die.for. Everything in this dish added something special, from the tender lobster to the lively curry and sweet corn and rice. It was such a filling yet light option, perfect for a hot summer day and lunch the next day. My mother-in-law and husband also really enjoyed their meals. We all agreed that the service, atmosphere, selection, and food would have us coming back again and again.

I’m a huge lover of wine bars, cozy places to get a glass or two, with no expectation of ordering a huge meal (unless you want to), and I wish Boston had more places like Cork and my favorite Galway wine bar, Sheridan’s.

Since we’re wine club members at Travessia, we’ll have reason to visit again in the fall, and I am making a trip to Cork mandatory.

Really, it was lunch for dinner, which meant there there were cocktails, like my Del Frisco’s favorite, the VIP. On a steamy night last week, a few Boston bloggers and I were treated to some of Del Frisco’s latest lunch menu items. As opposed to some dinner entrees, like big cuts of meat and sides, lunch dishes are lighter and much quicker to prepare. We learned that most of the lunch items can be made in about 10 minutes, making Del Frisco’s a great option for a work week lunch or business meeting.

But first, cocktails on the deck, overlooking the harbor. . .

VIP Cocktail at Del Frisco's

How can you say no to lunch with views like this?!

Liberty Wharf Boston

Once we were seated for lunch for dinner, we got a chance to check out the menu for the evening. Four smaller portions of some of Del Frisco’s favorite lunch items made for a VERY filling dinner.

Del Frisco's lunch

seared ahi tuna salad

Seared Ahi Tuna Salad (shaved Napa cabbage, arugula, mango, chilled noodles, toasted almonds, tomato, avocado, ginger-sesame dressing)

This, in my mind is the perfect dish. It’s the type of meal I could eat starting at brunch, all the way through late-night and never get tired of it. My appetite lately has been strange, much like that of a 19 year old frat boy. Really, I have been wanting carbs, cheese, and salt in every possible form: pizza, fries, chips. That’s about it. This salad did its part in reawakening my love for fresh foods and flavors that pop. Simply delicious.

spaghettini

Spaghettini (garlic shrimp, plum tomato, basil, and lemon zest)

This dish ended up being my favorite, I guess because the abovementioned food cravings. I loved that, although it was a pasta dish, it was still very light and full of flavor from the shrimp. The tomato also gave it a nice acidity. As you can see, I cleaned my plate. (I’m not that messy though, I did share mine with my neighbor.)

steakhouse salad

Steakhouse Salad (broiled prime strip steak, deviled egg, baby mixed greens, watercress, avocado, cherry tomato, bacon, parmesan, blue cheese and horseradish lemon dressing)

It really doesn’t get much better than this. I even had a few bites of the perfectly cooked steak, which matched up great with crisp greens, tangy blue cheese, and avocado. But the deviled egg?! Who thought of this genius? I have never had a salad with a deviled egg before, but I think it needs to become a standard salad topping.

Orrechiette (grilled chicken breast, baby spinach, and roasted garlic parmesan cream)

By the time this creamy, decadent plate of little pasta arrived, I was just about full. I managed a few bites noticing in particular, the grilled flavor of the chicken, which I loved, and the garlicky cream sauce. This dish, for me, would be perfect in a few months, when the temperatures start dropping and there’s a need for something cozy.

It was fun to have the opportunity to try so many delicious lunch dishes all in one meal. Del Frisco’s is open for lunch Monday-Friday 11:30-4:00, and their lunch menu is impressive and quick, if you need it to be. I could see lunch at Del Frisco’s being the perfect mid-day treat on a day off in Boston too.

What’s your lunch style? Do you go out to eat, bring food to eat at your desk?

As this was a media event, Del Frisco’s kindly provided our meals at no charge, but as always, my opinions are my own.
