Boston does its fair share of waiting for longer days and sidewalks free of slush and snow. When the weather gets warmer, we are all ready to get out and about. Outdoor dining is one of the best ways to enjoy all the city has to offer – great food, beautiful architecture, and natural beauty. A few of my favorite Boston and Cambridge patios are below. I’m always looking for new outdoor spaces to visit, so please share your favorites (in Boston or not!) in the comments.

Legal Harborside

Legal Harborside – If you can get a seat, the roof deck at Legal Harborside is perfect for after work cocktails and small bites. Once the sun starts to set, head downstairs to the first floor for a full Legal menu, complete with raw bar offerings and great harbor views.

Boston at night

Sam’s at Louis – Sam’s has one of the best spots on Boston’s waterfront. They also serve up great cocktails, brunch, dinner, and a killer sunset.

Royal Sonesta Cambridge

ArtBar at the Royal Sonesta – While the above image is taken from our hotel room at the Royal Sonesta during a special celebration weekend, ArtBar definitely also offers some of the best views of Boston that you can find. A fun canvas of cocktails and addictive snacks like mac and cheese egg rolls and sweet potato tots make it easy to stay for another round.

Ashmont Grill

Ashmont Grill – Ashmont Grill is one of the reasons we moved to Dorchester, and it continues to be a favorite, especially during the summer and fall months. An enclosed patio that offers fleece blankets and a cozy fire pit make for a great date night. Bonus: in nicer weather, their Monday wine club events are sometimes held outside!

The Ledge, Dorchester

Ledge Kitchen & Drinks – I might be partial to restaurants in Dorchester, but the Ledge really has it all when it comes to summer dining. Their patio is a hidden oasis, and they offer dollar oysters on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Is there a better way to spend an evening than with a cold beer and some briny oysters?

The Blue Room

The Blue Room – Talk about an urban getaway! Just a few stairs separate the Blue Room patio from the hubbub of busy Cambridge, but it somehow feels a world a way. They have a killer wine list (and wine bar next door). I had an amazing dinner there last year, but the patio and grill are also open for lunch.

There are a couple of new outdoor dining spaces I am looking to try. The Rooftop @ Revere at the Revere Boston Common Hotel sounds delightfully swanky; the pool might be the perfect summer splurge. Current favorite Steel & Rye also has a patio and plenty of Rosé to match those dreamy summer evening skies.

Starting the week by feeling behind is not ideal, but here’s to hoping for lots of energy to somehow catch up on life. Work is busy; it’s seven days a week with calls at any time of day, including 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays. It’s hard to find time to take a mental breather! A silent meditation retreat is sounding pretty good right about now. . .

Blog events have been a nice way to reconnect with friends and network with new people while enjoying great food, and the Taste of Columbus Hospitality Group a couple of weeks ago was definitely one of these evenings. A week out from the marathon bombings, things still felt somber, and a gray, drizzly night added to that mood. Luckily, the Columbus Hospitality Group pulled together some great dishes to warm our hearts and stomachs! The group consists of the following restaurants and hotels.

  • Mistral
  • Teatro
  • Sorellina
  • Mooo…
  • L’Andana
  • XV Beacon Hotel
  • The Inn @ St Botolph

Upon early arrival at Mistral, I enjoyed cocktails with Lin and Megan before heading into a private back room to stuff ourselves silly with deliciousness.

As we entered the room, I grabbed a slice of Mistral’s beef tenderloin, mashed potato, and truffle oil pizza.

I absolutely adore Mistral. The food is delectable, and it’s a great, sophisticated yet still comfortable place for drinks. It’s also a great place for a girl’s night out in Boston. This beef tenderloin and mashed potato pizza, with it’s intoxicating truffle aroma is one of the most amazing comfort foods ever.

Mistral tuna tartare

Mistral tuna tartare is pretty legendary. I had it for the first time many moons ago for a date, even before I met my husband, We’ve been together for almost 10 years;  this tuna tartare has a long-running fan in me and I think the rest of the City of Boston as well.

La Nina Tortillas

Tortilleria La Niña, the first tortilla bakery in New England to authentically produce white corn tortillas and chips.  They’re local, and they use non-GMO corn I addition to being delicious. Tortilla chips are one of my major food groups, and I was happy to discover these tasty chips. Just add a big bowl of guacamole and a margarita!

Mooo. . . beef sirloin sliders

Other food highlights included sliders from Mooo. . . I hadn’t eaten at Mooo. . . . at that point, but actually had lunch there a week later when conducting a site tour of the beautiful XV Beacon. Part of my job is placing press and trade groups visiting Massachusetts in  hotels, so it’s always fun to get to visit and see the hotels firsthand. XV Beacon is absolutely gorgeous, so stylish and city chic!

One of my other favorites of the evening was Teatro’s fig and prosciutto sausage in a spicy tomato brodo with a charred pepper. The tomato brodo was so warm and comforting. Even as it gets warmer I have been all about the soup lately; this little bite was both tasty and soul-warming.

Wine is another of my major food groups, and since we were just back from California and yearning to go back already, I went with a glass of Trefethen Chardonnay. The event also offered a selection of cocktails; everything looked great.

Trefethen Chardonnay

I loved the opportunity to try bites from restaurants I haven’t been to; it definitely inspired me to want to check them out. Once of the great things about this tasting event was that it was small. Sometimes “taste of” type events can be overwhelming, but at this one we were able to grab a table and go back and forth to get food and take photos. All in all, a great event.

I am officially at the point where I don’t know what to cook anymore. This is serious. I, the person who pretty much always knows exactly what she wants to eat, suddenly doesn’t care what’s on my plate each night, as long as it fills me up and doesn’t take too much time.

Blame it on winter’s lingering presence making me want to hunker down and do just about nothing. (Yeah, that workout routine I started on the one nice day we had, that’s not been very successful.) Or maybe it can be blamed on the 12 hour workdays, back-to-back-to-back, travel to visit family, events, and other worries. All I know is that food has taken a back seat, and I am hoping my passion for cooking or even just eating, rather than getting meals over with, returns soon.

Convenience foods have been a saving grace during this time. I know, I know, they aren’t usually healthy, and it’s probably just as easy to make something from scratch. Still, knowing that I have a delicious chicken pot pie in the freezer is like meal insurance.

We’ve been living off of semi-homemade meals, and to be honest, many of them have come out quite good.

Trader Joe's spinach ricotta

A couple of convenience foods that go perfectly together are Trader Joe’s frozen ricotta and spinach ravioli, pairing perfectly with chicken sausage. I am getting to the point where I am not super interested in eating meat or any protein for that matter, but I always enjoy chicken sausage for some reason, especially since it comes in so many varieties. Frozen ravioli, chicken sausage, and some of my favorite sweet peppers plus a salad with the best creamy balsamic dressing ever (The dressing recipe is from Food Network Magazine; I definitely want to share it. It has us wanting to eat piles of veggies just so we can have more dressing!)

chicken sausage and peppers

Instant whole grain rice, tofu, and frozen veggies topped with sriracha also come in handy when it comes to looking for quick eats. The box of goodies that Oldways sent me for Whole Grain Sampling Day has been a huge help and a great reminder that foods that are convenient can be delicious and really good for you.

Do you ever get in an eating slump? What are your go-to convenience foods?
