Mmmm  mmmm mmm. Leftovers can be the best dinners, and this week’s fried rice with kimchee and shrimp, topped with a fried egg, was definitely evidence of that fact. The making of the dish was inspired by leftover kimchee and rice from Myers + Chang. You see, I wasn’t feeling well on Monday; I felt achy, and while I normally do jump out of bed in the morning, I could not get up for the life of me. I may have actually gotten up and gone back to bed, something I never ever do. I felt that icky.

Fast forward to dinner time, and my husband was on his way home from work. ALL I WANTED was hot and sour soup from Myers + Chang. Last year when I had pneumonia and multiple flus, I discovered this soup to have magical healing powers, not to mention deliciousness, and comforting powers. And my awesome husband, after a 10 hour work day, went out of his way to the South End to pick it up, along with my other favorites.

Since we didn’t have any food in the house the following day (Did I mention I may have slept through most of Sunday because I felt awful and never made it to the grocery store?), I turned to leftovers. Thinking back to a post that Michelle wrote awhile back. I decided on kimchee fried rice.

It consisted of kimchee and rice. Winking smile

Yum me, yum you. I love Myers + Chang so much.

I also added in some chopped carrots and broccoli.

I got the carrots started in a little bit of olive oil first so they would soften. Then I added the broccoli. I had hoped to add chopped onion, but all of our onions were moldy. Boy do we need to go shopping!

Once the rice and carrots were sizzlin’ I tossed the kimchee in and gave the whole thing a few splashes of sesame oil, soy sauce, and sriracha.

At the very end I added chopped shrimp and tossed everything until well mixed and cooked.

I then topped the fried rice with a fried egg.

And some more sriracha.

Yum. My husband commented that the meal tasted like it was made with a lot of love, and it really was. Despite feeling off, I loved being able to whip up something really delicious that also left extras for his lunch.

Have you had any lovely leftover meals lately?

Cozy Beacon Hill spot 75 Chestnut made the perfect location for a friend’s recent birthday celebration. The food and company were so good that I forgot to take photos. Still, I thought our wonderful dining experience was more than worth sharing. And it was definitely worth repeating again and again.

75 Chestnut

Tucked away on a quaint side street in Beacon Hill, 75 Chestnut is small, dimly lit, and warm. It was packed from the start of our meal until we left, and I would definitely recommend reservations.

We were seated in a corner table perfect for the occasion and a little away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. A quick review of the cocktail menu, and we ordered drinks. I, of course, had studied the menu carefully days prior and knew I wanted the Ginger Sidecar:  This take on a classic blends Remy Martin VSOP, Domaine de Canton and fresh lemon juice.

It was delicious and tart, and although on the fall cocktail menu, it was perfect for the hot and humid evening.

Our table decided to share an order of  Tomato & Basil Bruschetta: Roma tomatoes, fresh basil, ricotta cheese, kalamata olives,  grilled focaccia bread and aged balsamic reduction . Chewy grilled bread made a smoky bed for salty olives. creamy cheese, fresh tomatoes, and a sweet balsamic reduction. The plate contained four pieces of bruschetta, providing the perfect bite for each of us.

For dinner I ordered one of the specials, a tuna steak with a pineapple salsa atop salad greens. Cooked to perfection, the meaty tuna was definitely brightened by the salsa, and the crunchy vegetables provided a nice freshness. It was another winning course, and one I finished the next day for lunch.

I’m not always a huge dessert fan, but the dessert menu at 75 Chestnut offered a bunch of tantalizing options. We decided to split two amongst the four of us. My friend and I also ordered pumpkin martinis, seriously swoon-worthy concoctions made with Baileys caramel, vanilla vodka, cinnamon schnapps, and pumpkin pie spice, a glass of creamy pumpkin pie.

Our desserts rounded out the perfect evening.  We chose The 75 Chestnut Sinful Chocolate Trilogy, a sampling of miniature desserts featuring warm chocolate bread pudding, Swiss chocolate and almond soup
and a bitter sweet chocolate crème brûlée  and  Grandma’s Carrot Cake, three layers of carrot spice cake with coconut,  pineapple and fresh whipped cream. Both desserts were outstanding and provided flavors on opposite ends of the dessert spectrum, sweet and rich, and spicy and fruity. They were large enough that two desserts for four people were perfect.

The service at 75 Chestnut was great, attentive and not at all rushed, despite the never ending coming and going of diners. It was a perfect place to have dinner with friends, with top notch food and drink and a great comfy vibe.

Do you have a favorite place to celebrate a special occasion or get together with friends?

Bloggers Eat Well!

TGIF! Are you ready for the weekend? That’s probably a very silly question. What have you got planned? In addition to getting in some sun and end-of-season boat time, I am also hoping to check out the Boston Local Food Festival and to do some baking and cooking and sleeping. And maybe a workout or two in there. Have I mentioned how much I am loving my spinning bike?

To get you in the mood for a weekend of food and fun, I thought I would share some pics from a blogger get together that Elina had on Tuesday night. When Boston food bloggers get together, there is always a lot of fun, and not surprisingly, a lot of really good food. If you’re planning a party any time soon, I suggest checking out some of the blogs mentioned in this post for appetizer inspiration!

Megan and I met up at Whole Foods before the party to grab a bunch of snacks to bring. She had the brilliant idea to make baguette slices topped with Maplebrook Farm ricotta cheese and sour cherry preserves. It was absolutely delicious, pretty to look at, and so easy!

We also grabbed some Manchego and Soppresata for a quick antipasti platter.

And we got to help Elina making an absolutely amazing pizza bread, each little dough ball filled with meat and cheese and baked until soft, golden, and puffy. You’ll want to make this one, trust me.

Cara made these zucchini roll ups, grilled and filled with goat cheese, raisins, and pine nuts. I will be making these in the very near future and devouring them all by myself. Talk about a fun and scrumptious way to get veggies in!

And who doesn’t love chocolate covered fruit? Lizzy spoke to the group’s sweet tooth with these juicy, decadent bites.

Olives make a quick and easy crowd pleaser; these lemony ones from Whole Foods are an addictive favorite. You definitely can’t eat just one.

Our wonderful hostess also made cheesecake pops with farmer’s cheese. cheesecake pops

And finally, though not a good photo at all, this incredible savory cheesecake with tomato jam was made by Shannon and revisited many times. All I can say is yum.

There was lots of other great, unphotographed food like Bridget‘s feta and red pepper dip, a spicy eggplant and pepper dip, vegan pumpkin mac and cheese and more. Yum.

I love catching up with Boston bloggers, and I equally love eating lots of cocktail party foods in a beautiful outdoor setting like Elina’s patio. It was a great night that provided some tasty recipe inspiration!
