Mixed feelings are the words I would use to sum up my first experience at Beacon Hill Bistro this Sunday.

A belated birthday celebration for my friend Raija, dinner was a long-awaited occasion, and once we were settled at our cozy table, decided to toast with some bubbly.

I ordered one of the wine specials, a sparkling rose of Malbec. Our waitress seemed a little surprised by our order, despite the fact that there were only three wine specials, and I think we were the surprised ones when she returned, unable to find the wine.

She had the manager come over to awkwardly suggest something else for us. In this situation, I would have thought an apology or even the offer of a more expensive option at the same price of the missing wine would have been a nice touch. It just felt very awkward.

Mumm Napa Brut

We decided instead on a bottle of Mumm Napa Brut, a favorite of mine since our first visit to Mumm. Cheers!

A basket of bread and butter made it to our table, and I decided to pass it up, anticipating the appetizers ordered.

First came the mussels: Steamed Maine Mussels with Leeks, Roasted Tomatoes, Stella Artois and Herb Aioli. I usually don’t order mussels out because I can make them so easily at home, but I snagged one and it was plump and perfectly cooked.

I was more excited about the special we ordered, fondue. A pot of hot cheese arrived with a plate heaped with crusty bread, boiled potatoes, cornichons, carrots, and greens.

fondue

I ate  LOT of the fondue, especially with the dressed greens and cornichon. I loved the tangy pickles with the creamy cheese. I could have eaten the entire pot of fondue, but I saved some room for my entrée, seared scallops with duck confit.

AMAZING. There were so many flavors on this dish, and the duck confit and scallops just worked. I very rarely clean a plate, but other than the few bites I shared with my friends, I ate every last morsel and wanted more. This definitely rates up with some of the best dishes I have ever had.

My friend Meghan ordered the steak frites, and while I passed on the steak, I helped myself to the perfect, crispy frites.

Raija had the tagliatelle with braised chicken, mushrooms, and kale. The pasta was everything it should have been, and the rich chicken sauce made it a wonderful wintry dish. Why does my pasta not turn out like this? Sad smile

Throughout the meal, the service was just a little odd. Our server was flippant and a little brusque, definitely not the friendliest service I have experienced. There were also a lot of children in the restaurant, several who were running around which I thought was strange.

Overall, I would definitely return to Beacon Hill Bistro for the exquisite food and comfortable bistro setting in the heart of Beacon Hill.

Have you ever had a weird or uncomfortable experience with a waiter/waitress or other guests at a restaurant?

Last night I attended yet another great blogger event, this time a tweetup hosted by The Melting Pot Park Plaza location in downtown Boston.

The Melting Pot

When I arrived at the event, I was greeted by samples of Still River Winery apple ice wine, a crisp, sweet, and very slightly tart wine made from apples.

Here’s a bit of info from the Still River website:

The Quebecois call it ice cider. Sweet, golden, and full-bodied in the glass, Apfel Eis is made from a blend of local varietal apples – over 80 apples in each bottle. Inspired by techniques used to make ice wine, Apfel Eis is pressed without preservatives, and slowly fermented at very cold temperatures. This preserves the delicate aromas and flavors that would disappear if fermented more quickly at warmer temperatures. Unlike most wines and ciders made from apples, Apfel Eis has absolutely no sugar added – before or after fermentation.

The result is a unique taste sensation – sweet, with a gentle bite, complex flavor and clean finish. Apfel Eis preserves the aromatic fragrance of freshly picked apples. A sip or two, and you may find yourself in an apple orchard on a crisp fall day…

While I don’t always love fruit wine, I really liked the apple-y flavor of this wine and the bit of sharpness that it offered on the finish. I think it would be a perfect fall sipper!

We also were offered red or white sangria. I opted for the white, and it was refreshing and not too sweet, just the way I like it! 🙂

I wandered around the room a bit to check out the varieties of fondue that were bubbling up for us. There were two tables of cheesy fondue and two tables of dessert fondue. I was one of the first to dig in, and I definitely liked the Fiesta and Three Cheese blends the best, especially because the Fiesta had a little kick to it. I bypassed the veggies and apples and went straight for the bread!

Don’t worry, I saved some time for chocolate fondue and decadent dippers as well. There were plenty of rice krispy treats, strawberries, and brownies for dipping in the variety of chocolates. I made good friends with the dark chocolate and the cookies & cream. Surprisingly, I don’t always love rice krispy treats, but dipped in hot dark chocolate, they are pretty incredible!

I also had a couple of brownies and a big, juicy strawberry. Strawberries and chocolate are the perfect marriage!

Of course, one of the most fun parts of a blogger event are the bloggers themselves! It was great to see and meet blogger friends like Michelle, Tina, Fiona, Amanda, Alicia, and Katie. Boston has seriously got it going on when it comes to food bloggers. We need to have our own food blogger conference!

After fondue fun, I walked to South Station enjoying the glorious late evening sun of the longest day of the year. The husband was just out of work, so we decided to head to South Boston for a little walk on the beach.

There is something so renewing about the start of a new season, especially one that allows us to spend more time outdoors. And I was glad I got to kick it off with a little bit of everything I love most, my husband, the outdoors, food, wine, and friends.

Thank you to The Melting Pot for such a yummy event! I look forward to coming back to sit at one of your romantic lover’s lane tables!

On our winter trip across Europe, the hubby and I traveled from Amsterdam to Vienna to Munich to Lake Lucerne Switzerland. Not only would I recommend this series of cities to anyone, but I really can’t wait to do it all over again!
Driving from Munich to Lake Lucerne was a ridiculously beautiful trip. The mountains, perfectly paved roads, forests, and cute architecture kept me entertained while E drove our adorable little VW, zipping along on roads without speed limits. We stopped at a rest stop at the Swiss/German border, and I was dumbfounded. It was beautiful, almost like a ski lodge, and motorists were relaxing with cups of espresso, wine, beers, and full meals. It was a far cry from the McD’s and an overcrowded restroom here in the states!
Entering Switzerland, we drove through some absolutely breathtaking countryside, with sheer bluffs into lakes/rivers, and rocky snow capped mountains on the other side. Before we knew it, we had pulled up to our hotel, Hotel Drei Könige.

Situated on the corner of a centrally located street in Lucerne, this hotel was perfect for us. Our room was large and offered windows to the street on several sides. It also had a fan! I can not sleep without some sort of white noise, and after over a week without, I finally had it back!
Our view from our window was of Gutsch Castle and Gutschwald, and I literally spent about an hour just looking out onto the street and up at the mountains. Switzerland is SO beautiful, and the air is so clean.

With food always on my mind, I had a couple of things I wanted to try in Switzerland:
Alpine Macaroni – a cheesy noodle dish with apples, onions, and potatoes. Hearty, creamy, salty, tangy, and sweet. Yes please!

Raclette- heated cheese served melty and hot with potatoes, gherkins, and bread. Give me anything with potatoes and pickles, and I am a happy gal, but this nutty, slightly salty meal really provides a feast for the tastebuds.

Fondue- gruyere and emmental cheeses, mixed with cherry kirsch liquer and garlic, served with bread. I loved the garlicky, sweet, and creamy taste of the fondue and the way the crisp wine cut through the creaminess.

All paired with Swiss white wine, Neuchatel.

I managed to eat all 3 of these things during our few days in Lake Lucerne, and while I do not have photos (sorry!) I can remember the sensory experience that Swiss dining brought to me. My favorite dish, surprisingly, was not fondue, but the Alpine Macaroni. I ordered this in a very cosy little restaurant with dim lighting and stone walls. I was completely surprised by how much I liked Swiss white wine, and when I was presented with a metal pot of Alpine Macaroni, I was in heaven. It is a simple dish of noodles, cheese, potatoes, onions, butter, and chopped apples or applesauce. Such a sweet and savory unexpected combination that really stuck to my ribs!

Our time in Switzerland was not cold at all, even though it was January, I ended up taking my coat off at times, especially when we were climbing up to Gutsch Castle and exploring the hillsides and city walls of Lucerne.

One of the highlights of the trip was a lake cruise, where my love and I got to relax, drink Swiss wine, and stop at the little towns around the lake itself. The weather was truly insane, pouring rain, then sun, so we were able to get an amazing sense of how the lake and mountains look in a variety of weather types.

In a nutshell, our trip to Lucerne was full of great food and wine but also lots of walking and hillwalking, cruising, looking at art and architecture, listening to music (hello free concert by the Salzburg Chamber Orchestra!), and relaxing. We went in winter, but I am pretty sure this is a year round destination that I would like to visit again very soon! 🙂
