Farmer’s Markets

A typical Friday. Summer Fridays leave me toting around bags of kale, herbs, and lettuce wherever I go, thanks to the gorgeousness of the Copley Farmer’s Market. It’s a really awesome look that goes great with most outfits 😉 Carrying a large bag of greens is also a great conversation starter. Do you know that none of the ladies that I was out with has had a green monster smoothie?! I think I need to convert them!

Work was uneventful, and with my computer virus disaster from earlier in the week, I was glad. I snuck out for lunch and spent the time wandering the farmer’s market, wishing I could work there instead. How fun would that be for the summer?!

This week I checked out the baked goods at the Tatte Bakery booth. Everything looked full of buttery deliciousness.

I still need to get myself to the actual Tatte Bakery in Brookline.

I stopped to smell many, many flowers.

My heart was once again captured by the booth from Sofra and Siena Farms.

Fun rainbow beets and garlic scapes caught my eye. I love watching each week to see what new veggie or herb is growing in New England.

I left with several huge bunches of purple and green kale for salads along with some dill for a pasta dish I am making this weekend. It’s an old favorite, and I am really excited to share.

My after work fun began at Splash where I went to attend the Boston Sports Woman event. Before the event, I wandered around a little. Splash is definitely an interesting space with a Miami-like roof deck. If I wasn’t there for specific event, I would say maybe it’s not my scene.

The inside is spacious and modern. Our group had its own room and bartender.

There were some delicious bites available including this lobster salad in phyllo pastry shells.I had many of these!

I didn’t sample this prosciutto, but I thought it made a nice photo!

I DID have some of these tuna tartare and seaweed cups. I love eating seaweed!

I paired it all with a Roederer Estates Brut. A little bubbly is the perfect way to kick off a weekend! This Brut had a nice crisp pear flavor with a bit of nuttiness, almond maybe? It is from the Anderson Valley where I wish I was right now 😉

I had a great time meeting up with Kathy from Boston Sports Woman and the other ladies in attendance at the event. I think that Boston Sports Woman is going to do some really fun things for women writers in Boston, and I love that they also pair up with charities for women and girls like Glamour Gone Good.

Dinner at Les Zygomates post to follow. . . I think this recap of Friday afternoon is long enough!

It’s official. Summer is close by. From the opening of the Copley Farmer’s Market to the bright, raspberry painted toenails and gold sandals I rocked yesterday to the email from HR announcing that we close at 2:00 next Friday, all of the signs of one of my favorite seasons are here.

The Copley Square Farmer’s Market is every Tuesday and Friday, all summer long, and it is a feast for the senses. As the summer goes on, the offerings increase. Yesterday I was pretty surprised at how much local produce was available for late May. There were lots of greens like chard and spinach, a few varieties of radishes, and even organic strawberries!

I tend to stick to the same stalls, the Atlas Farms, Silverbrook Farms, and Keown Orchard stands, but yesterday I branched out and checked out the Siena Farms/Sofra stand. I ended up purchasing a bunch of these lovely “Easter egg” radishes.

And at another stall, grudgingly passing by these Red Velvet cupcakes. I love these, but I feel like I should buy veggies at a farmer’s market!

I browsed a variety of fresh, locally grown greens. I wanted a bit of everything but settled on a huge bunch of rainbow chard.

Atlas Farms had their first strawberries of the season, and they smelled amazing!

I thought about making strawberries my lunch. Don’t they look good? I am due for another strawberry salad sometime soon.

In addition to produce, the Siena stand offered Ana Sortun’s book and some of her Sofra spices. Chef Sortun owns Oleana, a Cambridge eatery that is on my list.

I am so excited about a summer of farmer’s markets! I love that blogging pushes me a little more to get out there, to get away from my desk during the day, and to take advantage of all of the local produce, cheese, eggs, and baked goods right outside my office door.  I also ran into Elina, camera in hand. It is easy to spot other bloggers! 🙂

I prepared the rainbow chard and radishes simply, with 4 cloves chopped garlic and a nice knob of Kerrygold butter. The flavors altogether were delicious! I love eating a big bowl of greens!

Interesting note about these shoes: I basically ruined them the first time I wore them. We were in Italy visiting my brother and sister in law, and we had a day trip planned to Civitella. My husband encouraged me to wear sneakers since we were trekking up hills and over steps that were hundreds of years old. Wear sneakers in the land of beautiful women and beautiful shoes?! I think not. So, I wore these, tripped on some old stairs, and scuffed the fronts. Battle scars, right? 🙂

It’s back! I was so excited to spend part of yesterday meandering around the SoWa (South of Washington) open markets in the South End. Live in Boston and never been? If you like this blog at all, you would LOVE the SoWa markets. A combination of farmer’s market, craft fair, and antique sale, the market has everything from decadent brownies to rhubarb to handcrafted bags and jewelry to adorably designed dog collars.

We spent a bit of time wandering around the market just being happy to be outside again. New England winters are loooooong, and I miss the outdoor fun.

I love fresh fruits and vegetables. They are so photogenic!

Rhubarb at SoWa Market

Rhubarb makes an excellent low calorie sauce or jam. It’s so easy, chop and rinse rhubarb stalks, then put them in a pot with a teaspoon or 2 of strawberry jello-mix. Add heat and let it all simmer together until the rhubarb has fallen apart. It is yummy! If you have fresh strawberries on hand, tossing those chopped in is delish as well. Use it to top plain yogurt, ice cream, or even on its own.

I am intrigued by these Sassy Sauces, and I want to learn more. They looked absolutely delicious, and had I been feeling better, I would have stopped to chat with the owner. Hello rum caramel! I could do with a dish of vanilla ice cream topped with that right about now!

Sassy Sauces

Several bakeries had artisanal bread on display. I can taste the freshness and feel the chewy texture of these breads right now. Both Sel del la Terre and When Pigs Fly make  incredible bread products. Give me a ciabatta, some olive oil, and some goat cheese, and I am all set!

I had hoped to do more browsing of the jewelry stands and the artist’s open studios that were also going on, but I had quite the dizzy spell from being in the sun and having not eaten yet. When I get like this, I need to be away from people and to shove something in my face as quickly as possible. A sprite and a cheesecake bite later, I felt a little better but not great.

The lesson? I need to eat more. I have been thinking this for quite awhile as I often leave the house without food and it is really just silly. I know myself, and I know how scary and uncomfortable these spells are. Ironically, the last really bad one I had was at The Ferry Building Market in San Francisco.

As a result of this revelation, I spent a ton at Trader Joe’s just to make sure I had plenty of fruit, yogurt, and nuts on hand to make sure I am full. Really, sometimes I just sit at my desk, tummy growling like mad, and do nothing about it. Not good for my body or my mind.

I would love to hear what your go-snacks are for on the go and if you have some easy, quick recipes that can be made and brought along on an outing. I hate just grabbing granola or nutrition bars; I get so sick of them!
