It’s finally open! Dorchester Brewing Co.’s opening was much-anticipated and long-awaited for many of us Dorchester residents, and I was so excited to get a sneak peek last week at the ribbon cutting with Mayor Walsh.

I was even more excited to learn how much local love the brewery team has; so much of what has gone into constructing the brewery and making it beautiful has to do with local Dorchester people and businesses. Dorchester Brewing Co  Mayor Walsh was on hand for remarks and has provided some great support along the way; he really let the brewery team shine though, and shine they did.

I love that they have games and a patio along with two tasting bars and will be host not only to house beers but beer collaborations with brewers who don’t have their own breweries.

The staff was fantastic, and the beers we tasted, Clapp’s Cream Ale and Mass Ave IPA,, were delicious. I don’t even like IPAs, and I loved this one. It was so balanced and easy to drink with lovely pine and citrus notes.

The integration of the old and the new dotted the space, and hope for the surrounding community as well as the space within was everywhere. I was so impressed with everything; the brewery really went above and beyond all of my hopes and expectations.

Aiming to be a gathering place and a place even for families, Dorchester Brewing Co. will have a b. good food truck outside most of the time, giving beer lovers a healthy-ish local option for pairing food with beer. I love b. good fries and bowls!

While I am bummed we sold our condo a few blocks away, as a Dorchester resident for 10 years,  I am so excited to have this inspiring and fun new business as ours. Welcome to Dorchester!

Dining in Dorchester just gets better and better! This year we’ve seen the arrival of Dorset Hall, and just a couple of weeks ago, Lower Mills Tavern opened their doors (and windows) to a very excited neighborhood. In that stretch alone now, we have Ester, BRED (and awesome burger place), Kapow (for Thai), The Ice Cream Smith, and Sweet Life Bakery, which is now open for drinks and dinner. We can walk to the are from home, and it’s nice to be able to split up a meal – drinks in one place, appetizers in another, an ice cream for the walk home.

I won’t lie; I was sad when Lower Mills Pub closed. It was a neighborhood-y no-nonsense pub with a great pint of Guinness. I know it had plenty of regulars who miss it, but I am excited about the new life that has been breathed into the space.

Lower Mills Tavern

Lower Mills is a very cute area and is accessible by the MBTA trolley from Ashmont Station. It’s also very easy to get to by car, and parking in the area is plentiful.

Brown Derby

We’ve had two great experience at Lower Mills Tavern so far; I am a big fan of their Brown Derby cocktail but also love that they have a bubbly on the menu that is NOT Prosecco. I prefer my bubbles to be dry, and the One Hope Brut is delicious.

Charcuterie On our first visit, we went for the charcuterie, Beer Braised Pork Sliders, and Bacon Batter Hushpuppies with Chipotle Sausage Gravy.

sliders While we didn’t choose the healthiest items on the menu, we did choose a whole lot of deliciousness, especially the hushpuppies dipped in gravy. Portions were great for sharing, and these three items left us full and happy.

hush puppies On our second visit, we kicked off the evening with oysters. These were from New Brunswick and were nice and briny and small, just the way I love my oysters.

My husband had the already-famous LMT Burger,  while I went for the Fried Chicken Sandwich without the bun and a salad, trying to be sort of healthy. Aside from the whole “fried, smothered in cheese, topped with bacon, and dipped in buttermilk ranch” bit it was totally healthy. Salad!

This was so good! Lightly fried with a nice crust and with the perfect toppings. This sandwich without the bread will be a craving of mine in the future!

The staff that we have encountered at Lower Mills Tavern have all been super friendly and accommodating; everyone is very excited about the opening and being part of the community. I am thrilled to have another place for local date nights and for meeting friends and neighbors.

Have you heard of The Daily Table?  We’d be reading about it here and there and finally made a trip last week. It’s one of my new favorite spaces.

The Daily Table

Here’s the story:

Daily Table is a not-for-profit retail store that offers our community a variety of tasty, convenient and affordable foods that will help you feel and be your best; food that will keep you moving forward, not hold you back.  We provide both “grab-n-go” ready to eat meals, and a selection of produce, bread, dairy and grocery items all at prices that will put a smile on your face, and designed to fit within every budget.  Many of our items are prepared fresh daily in our own kitchen onsite.

We offer an upbeat, clean and friendly retail store environment that is open to everyone in the community.  We can offer these daily values by working with a large network of growers, supermarkets, manufacturers, and other suppliers who donate their excess, healthy food to us, or provide us with special buying opportunities.

In this way, we are able to keep prices affordable for all our customers.  Our meals are priced to compete with fast food options, making it easier for families to eat healthier within their means.  And all the food in our store is informed by guidelines set for us by a leading group of nutrition experts, which makes it easy for our customers to make great food choices.

We held off on going to Daily Table for so long partially because we weren’t sure if it was open to all, and we certainly didn’t want to take away from anyone who could really benefit from shopping there. Then, while at the Dorchester Winter Farmers Market (another favorite), we were encouraged to visit and learned that everyone is welcome. The more shoppers, the more support the concept receives.

The Daily Table is bright, colorful, and inviting, with a friendly staff, and it relies on volunteers to keep costs down. Every time we have visited, the selection has been different, as the food is excess food from the store’s partners. I love that the selection varies, and we’ve decided to start our shopping here each week to plan meals around what they have, then supplement at the regular grocery store. On past visits, we’ve seen amazing deals on wild tuna (two hefty steaks for $5), spicy chicken burgers (four for $2.99), and organic yogurts, which are $0.49 each. Five pound tubs of hummus for $2.99 and baby carrots for $0.49 per pound make for plenty of healthy snacks that are affordable for a family.

carrots One of the really great things about The Daily Table is their made-on-site pre-made meal program. So far I have tried the delicious curried butternut squash soup, pulled pork pizza, and my new favorite, chili lime coconut chips, and everything has been so good. You can peek into the kitchen while you shop, and just like with the grocery items, prepared foods also often change. I’ve seen curries with rice, beef stew, quesadillas, sandwiches, and more. The prices are extremely competitive with fast food, making eating healthier much easier for busy people, especially the many in our community who hold multiple jobs to make ends meet.

The Daily Table Kitchen

coconut chips Shopping at The Daily Table has allowed us to save money and discover new ingredients. It’s also made me get creative in the kitchen, and in general, it just fills my heart with happiness for our community, which is full of great people who deserve the opportunity and access to healthy food. Eliminating food waste while helping people eat better? It just makes sense.

The Daily Table is a big step in the right direction to alleviating some of the issues created by food deserts, and I am proud to support this pilot program.
