We don’t dine in Newton often, but when having drinks with Lin and Jon in early July, we learned about the soon-to-open Farmstead Table and knew we would have to check it out. Last Thursday we were finally able to make the visit happen.

But first, we stopped by the Beantown Eats headquarters to meet their adorable dog and to have handcrafted cocktails made by Beantown Drinks. Win, win! Their dog is adorable, and each of us got our own, different cocktail. It was better than any bar I’ve visited lately!

After drinks, we made our way to Farmstead Table for a  dinner made of simple, delicious dishes and a server that was fun, attentive, and very knowledgeable with her wine pairings.

Salads and appetizers were ordered to share.

We also ordered the un-photographed Marinated Summer Vegetable Salad.

Our salads and appetizer instantly impressed me. Everything was incredibly fresh, simply prepared to let the natural flavors shine through.

Also impressive was our delightful server Robin. She’s someone we would love to go for a drink with, and we put it in her hands to help us select wine with dinner. Lin and I went with the oakier Chardonnay option (Sometimes oaky Chardonnay is referred to as “Cougar Juice”. . . I guess I am getting older!). The Talley Chardonnay ended up being perfect, with a nice acidity and just a hint of butterscotch and oak.

Delmonico Steak

Our entrees were a big hit. I sampled my husband’s Delmonico steak with potato puree, the steak perfectly cooked and juicy, the puree something I will be craving this winter, velvety, creamy, and filling.

I had the scallop special which included a lobster sauce and local corn. It was the epitome of summer and showed the obvious efforts that Farmstead Table is making in crafting seasonal dishes.

While we were enjoying our entrees, we were reminded that the house-made warm chocolate pudding cake took awhile to make and should be ordered in advance. There was no hesitation that we would share a dessert, and this divine dish was like hot chocolate in cake form. I only wish I had more room to truly indulge in this dessert.

Farmstead Table is a fabulous spot for dinner. The owners are hands-on, the food is local and seasonal, carefully crafted with pride and expertise. Everyone was warm, friendly, welcoming, and hospitable. The menu at Farmstead Table changes very frequently, and I look forward to returning to see what the coming months bring.

It’s been an exciting few weeks around here, full of family visits, celebrations, a little bit of travel, and perhaps most exciting, a new job for my husband! He finished up at his old company on Thursday, and he doesn’t start his new job until after Labor Day, giving him a much deserved week off.

In the midst of his interviewing, giving his notice, and getting ready for the transition, we’ve also been dealing with more neighbor issues  (Our house is seriously cursed, see this post.) that have kept us from sleeping many nights. So by the time our 6th wedding anniversary rolled around last weekend, all we wanted to do was nothing.

We kicked off the day with takeout dim sum from Myers + Chang and ended up spending the rainy afternoon napping on the boat. By the time we woke up and were less groggy, it was dinner time, on our anniversary, the fridge was empty, and we didn’t have a reservation anywhere.

A quick search of Opentable showed that City Landing had space available. I had been curious to try the restaurant that filled the old Sel de la Terre space at the waterfront, so we booked it, quickly got ready, and made our way over for dinner.

We were first blown away by how friendly the hostess was. She noticed I was carrying a letter, and she offered to mail it for me as she was seating us.

Once we got settled at our outside table to enjoy the now rain-free evening, we decided on cocktails. Following up on our visits to Grand Ten this summer, I decided to get the Long Wharf Fizz which has Grand Ten’s Wire Works gin in it.

I instantly loved the bright hue of my drink, which was chock full of raspberry flavor. It was the perfect summer libation and matched the lovely sunset we ended up having.

City Landing’s menu offered a bunch of options that we were interested in, so it was pretty hard to decide. Our server Erik did an amazing job recommending his favorites and ensuring that everything was perfect.

We decided to share one appetizer, Mini Lobster Rolls
(Butter Poached Maine Lobster, Portuguese Bread, Micro Celery). The only downside to the lobster rolls is that they were really mini. Each was just two bites, but they were delicious bites, full of sweet and tender lobster with a lemony butter in soft, slightly sweet rolls.

As I often do, I ordered a salad and an appetizer for my meal. Missing is a photo of my Heirloom Tomatoes with White Balsamic. It was simple, highlighting my favorite summer ingredient, just as I had hoped.

Always a fan of shrimp and grits, I also ordered the  Bostonian Shrimp n’ Grits
(Roasted Peppers, Linguica Sausage, Four Star Farms Stone Milled Polenta) which were amazing. The grits were fluffy and creamy, and I loved the flavors from the sausage and peppers.

My husband’s meal, however, ended up one-upping my very delicious dinner. Our server recommended the Coffee and Brown Sugar Cured Beef Tenderloin, and it was the perfect recommendation. The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender with a great crust on the edges from the coffee and brown sugar. The beef was served with heirloom tomatoes and avocado with a mole rojo sauce. I ended up eating more of this dish than the one bite I had planned on. It was too good to not go back for more.

When we arrived at City Landing, our server asked if we were out for a special occasion, and we mentioned our anniversary. When it was time for dessert, we were presented with two glasses of bubbly, and the dessert we chose, the to-die-for Coconut Cream Tart, had a special message for us. What a thoughtful touch!

City Landing was better than we could have ever hoped for. Being that the restaurant is new, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they have clearly invested a lot of time in training staff and focusing on a menu that is seasonal, local, and creative. All of their attention to detail resulted in a memorable experience.  From start to finish, we were taken care of so well, and we left wanting to plan a return trip.

Trying to cram in as much summer as possible, I have literally been eating cherries, tomatoes, peaches, and corn all day every day. I’ve been dreaming about a day when I am a zillionaire and can build a greenhouse in my back yard to grow all of my fruit and veggie favorites year-round. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

My pizza made with almond meal pizza crust is a big hit in this house, so this week, instead of a saucy, cheesy pizza, I decided to put a summery twist on it by making an almond meal flatbread with grilled peaches, arugula, prosciutto, and goat cheese.

The only real work involved in this recipe is making the almond meal crust. I simply mixed up two cups of almond meal, two eggs, and a drizzle of olive oil together and rolled it out as thin as possible. It was still too thick for my taste, but it’s a sticky dough. I’d love to perfect it to get a less thick, less dense crust.

I baked the crust at 350 for about 18 minutes.

While the crust was baking, I pulled together my other ingredients, including this Volpini pre-chopped prosciutto. I think I am done with prosciutto. I love the flavor, but it’s always so chewy!

I used my grill pan to get some grill marks on the peaches. They were beautiful, smelled great, and more importantly tasted so delicious.

Once the almond meal crust was done, I just topped it with all of my ingredients. I finished with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt.

The flavors in this dish were phenomenal as were the different textures. Unfortunately, the almond meal crust was really thick  which made it a little dry. I guess it works better as a saucier option to cut some of that dryness. Still, this was a tasty meal and one that packed a pretty good protein punch.
