Happy New Year! I hope you had great one! Did you go out or stay in? We made a fire, drank Champagne, and ordered Thai food. Being in a new home is interesting in that we are still figuring out what takeaway restaurants we like, but we lucked out with Kapow in Lower Mills. The avocado curry was to-die-for! We made it to 12:02 before shutting out the lights and promptly falling asleep. This holiday season was stressful for a number of reasons, and I am actually pretty glad to see it over. Next stop, a fabulous 2014!

Life has been moving quickly, and we have been out and about in Boston quite a bit here and there for drinks and appetizers mostly. Below are some photos from Barlow’s and Ward 8, two recent after work stops.

I always sort of forget about Barlow’s but on one particularly bad traffic night (Seriously, what’s up with Boston traffic lately?!), found ourselves off 93 and in South Boston, hungry and trying to wait out traffic. We ended up finding easy parking near Barlow’s, and we were delighted to find it festively decorated and bustling with great energy. Their cocktail list is long and really fun, and the appetizer menu is the same. We ordered up drinks and then shared a few really delicious items: Thai Chicken Dumplings, Short Rib Tacos, Pretzels with Sam Adams Cheese Fondue.

I didn’t expect too much from our bar food items, but everything was so good! The tacos, especially, wowed me, with tender and flavorful short rib meat

And we were practically fighting over the fondue. Once we finished the warm, soft pretzels, our server gave us house made chips to dip in the decadent fondue. Barlow’s is sort of on our way home, and I would not hesitate to stop again for snacks and drinks or dinner.

Another place we visited recently was Ward 8, which took the spot of Nebo in the North End. I followed the progress of Ward 8 as they worked on the space, so I was excited to finally sit at the beautiful, huge white marble bar. The space is fantastic, and the cocktail menu is really great. I had a Ward 8, naturally.

Ward 8

We decided once again on bar snacks, and we really enjoyed the Bacon Cashew Caramel Corn (Really, how can you go wrong?) and the 3 Cheese Spinach Dip. The full menu looked great as well, and Ward 8 has a raw bar I would love to return for

The Fry Sampler was just kind of meh. You know I love my fries, and these were kind of underdone. The lemon aioli was good, but for a fry fix in the area, Saus has my heart.

I think Ward 8 has some real potential once they get a good rhythm going. Service was great but not very friendly; other than that I would definitely say it was a good after work experience.

I’ve said it a million times, but Boston is chock full of great restaurants, new and old, and snacks and drinks are a great way to be able to experience more but within a budget. We’ll often go home and make a dinner with food we already have after sampling a few things out.

In this New Year I am hoping to cook more at home and to move more, plain and simple. I have a good feeling about 2014 and hope yours started off fabulously!

What did you do for New Year’s? Do you have any resolutions?

Located below street level on Harvard Square’s Brattle Street, the newly opened Beat Hotel  is a true treat for all of the senses.

Beat Hotel

Please excuse the fuzzy photo. I got lost, and it was raining! The owner of Beat Hotel mentioned that they had  a sign for the sidewalk on the way, which will much easier for people to find this currently hidden gem. Inside, I first noticed how vast the space is. It just keeps going and going, and there are two nice long bars in addition to the dining areas, making it a comfortable space for crowds to stretch out.

The decor is 60’s-chic, with lots of colors and funky lights, making the environment cool and bohemian without being tacky and overdone.

Like its sister property, The Beehive, Beat Hotel is definitely centered around music and features nightly jazz or blues, creating a laid back vibe that is easy to be in.

That same artistry is carried through to the food and beverage at Beat Hotel. My American Breed cocktail (Makers, St. Elder Elderflower liqueur, apple cider) was a kicking taste of fall. Bar staff was a delight, and even though I was first at the event, I was made to feel incredibly welcome.

Even more exciting are the wines on tap, which allows Beat Hotel to offer a variety of wines by the glass, always fresh and delicious.

wine on tapThe wine list is comprised of mostly (maybe all?) California wines, but I loved that it offered far more than your typical Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes like Gruener Veltliner, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Cabernet Franc help to make up this list, and it’s exciting for wine lovers.

The food at Beat Hotel is as fun, funky, and innovative as the decor and drinks. I loved everything I tried. The fun part about dining with a big group, especially of food bloggers, is the opportunity to share lots of dishes. These are just a few photos of what we sampled. Everything was outstanding, except for my photos, clearly.

It was the Vegan Earth Bowl that blew me away, even after some more intricate dishes before it. I have a little marathon coming up this weekend so decided on a healthier option for my entree at Beat Hotel. The Vegan Earth Bowl was the best choice, and I have been craving it since. Veggies, edamame, pilaf, roasted pumpkin, and pumpkin tahini made this dish burst with flavor. It’s portion was large enough that I had leftovers, and it was so fresh and yummy that it was positively addictive.

I had an amazing experience at Beat Hotel and look forward to going back again soon to sample the rest of the menu. Apologies for the weirdly sized and blurry photos in this post, blog issues abound, as always!

Dinner was complimentary, however all opinions are my own.

Boston’s newest waterfront watering hole, Pier 6 in Charlestown, might just become our winter hangout as we while away time away from boat season. Our favorite time of year is dwindling; we can’t really go out on the boat after work anymore due to the lack of daylight, and we’ve had plenty of weekend days that are just too windy for us to leave the dock.

Sunday was not that day. Glorious sunshine made for a day of lounging and reading on the bow, my favorite place on the planet. When 5:00 rolled around we decided that it was time to pack up, but we did not want to go home. Pier 6 was the perfect place to get a little more fresh air while enjoying the Boston skyline we love so much.

Pier 6 Charlestown Located in the Charlestown Navy Yard on Pier 6, the restaurant offers three stories, including a first floor bar, a middle floor dining room, and a roof deck, which is where we sat. Look at these views!

Pier 6, Charlestown Pier 6, Charlestown Pier 6 has some great offerings for wine and beer. My husband went with the Harpoon stout while I had a rose of Cinsault, a nod to the beautiful late summer evening.

Pier 6 has a great menu that has a slight emphasis on seafood but a variety of other options, including a BBQ plate that looked amazing.

Pier 6 menu We decided to have all the oysters, going with two each of the Wellfleet, Island Creek, Chatham, Salt Air, Conway, and Snow Cove. I love oyster tasting; much like with wine, the oysters’ terroir really stands out in flavor, texture, and size.

We also split the delightfully messy Sweet & Sticky Wings which were addictive, with a soy and ginger glaze.

Overall, we really enjoyed everything about our first visit to Pier 6. Service was a little slow, but I think that can be expected, especially when a place is new and so crowded. We will definitely be visiting again soon and getting our water fix here this winter.
