If there was a Maoz in Boston, I would eat there for lunch every single day. Have you been to a Maoz? Prior to our trip to DC, I had only eaten at Maoz in Europe, Amsterdam, many, many times. I stalked Maoz, checking out where new locations opened up, never seeming to be in a place I would be visiting.

As soon as our trip to DC was planned, I had Maoz on the brain. I only wish we had gotten there sooner.

This quick, casual, take out or eat in spot is glistening with cleanliness, bright, and a nice cool break from the oppressive DC heat.

Maoz offers salads, falafel, fries, fresh juices. The menu is small, but focused on high quality vegetarian food. I usually get some form of falafel, either in a salad or in a pita, and then start in on the toppings.

From pickles to olives, seasoned carrots, red peppers, beets, onions, and chickpeas, you can build yourself a lunch that is packed with textures, flavors, and nutrition.

And then there are the sauces. Salsa, clantro sauce, pickled onion chutney, tahini, creamy garlic. . . there are so many, and I usually have a bit of everything.

Maoz is an amazing option for an inexpensive lunch while traveling. The one in DC seemed to be a hot spot for nearby workers. We were there at noon on a Monday, and it was buzzing with takeout orders. I long to be lucky enough to work near a Maoz in Boston. Someone open a franchise, pretty please?

Because it was so hot, we followed lunch in another cool place that I don’t often get to, Pinkberry. Mango fro yo with fresh raspberries. I love that they offer really small portions for people looking for a little treat.

Maoz is definitely my favorite fast food chain. Do you have a chain restaurant that you love, or an item at a chain restaurant that you crave?

Of all of the things I did at Eat, Write, Retreat, EAT was definitely one of the things I did the most. Between the opening reception, Capitol Hill Food Tour, swag bag snacks, and free hotel breakfast, I wasn’t feeling hunger pangs that weekend!

Saturday morning was busy, with a fabulous food writing session by Monica Bhide, and by the time that was over, we were ready for some sunshine and food.

Lunch was scheduled for a few blocks away at McCormick & Schmick’s, a seafood restaurant I have eaten at and enjoyed many times in Boston. The very warm and sunny walk was glorious, and we were welcomed to tables set just for us.

Mirassou provided the wine for the lunch. I love wine at lunch; it makes any occasion feel special, and it reminds me of being in Europe. In short, Americans should have more wine with lunch.

We started with a cool, sweet glass of Moscato and a warm welcome from the chef, who explained each course and told us a little bit about the farm fresh ingredients used.

First up was an anchovy and roasted beet salad. It was beautifully plated with some lovely reduced balsamic vinegar. I did not care for the anchovies, but I did try them! I loved the sweet beets, greens, and the balsamic. I thought the Moscato was a little too sweet for the first course, but that could just be me. I still enjoyed it!

Next up was a flaky, fabulous wild halibut with mushrooms, baby bok choy, in a miso broth. Bok choy should definitely be used more often! The fresh halibut had a salty flavor from the miso, and the mushrooms really rounded the whole thing out with their earthiness. The fish was paired with Mirassou Pinot Noir, a great choice if you are having fish and dining with red wine lovers. Deep cherry flavors and a nice acidity made this a great wine for pairing with the main course.

Ooof. After all of that, there was more wine and dessert! Look.at.that.dessert. Strawberry rhubarb shortcake with a homemade biscuit was topped with mascarpone cream and vanilla ice cream and paired with a stunning Mirassou Riesling. I think the Moscato would have gone better with this little bowl of heaven, but with its crisp, stone fruit flavors the Riesling was a perfect wine for a hot day.

Our Eat, Write, Retreat swag bags included a couple of gift certificates to McCormick & Schmick’s, and I can’t wait to use them for oysters, chowder, and beers, my favorite things to get at the McCormick & Schmick’s bar.

Part of the Eat, Write, Retreat experience was a walking food tour of the Capitol Hill area of Washington, DC with DC Metro Food Tours. Conference attendees boarded buses on Saturday evening, and we met our fun guides for an evening FULL of food, history, and fun conversation.

I had never wandered he Capitol Hill neighborhood before, but it is gorgeous. Neat little brick houses, many painted in bright colors like pink and purple, sit side-by-side with slightly overgrown gardens full of bright greens and rainbows of flowers. It was both stunning and an allergy nightmare. But I tried to ignore my inability to breathe and soldiered on in the name of food.

Our first stop was the Capitol Hill Tandoor & Grill where we met the owner and had a few Anglo-Indian bites.

We started with Mulligatawny Soup with a squeeze of lemon which made the soup bright and flavorful.

Next, plates of naan bread, Basmati rice, and spicy chicken and vegetables came out. The sauce on the chicken really had a kick; I wanted to scrape every last bit off of the plate. Both courses were delicious.

The tour left plenty of time for meandering and checking out some historical homes and a generally lovely neighborhood. This one’s for my Canadian friends, eh. Winking smile

We also passed the Commandant’s house where the Commandant of the Marines has always lived. A Marine barracks sprawls behind it, taking up several blocks.

This was one of my favorite yards on the tour. I loved how the yards and gardens weren’t impeccably manicured. It gave them a Secret Garden feeling.

Our next stop was for some Southern soul food at Levi’s Port Café. This is the best soul food in DC, and we certainly filled up.

I sipped on sweet tea and sampled a plate of collard greens, cornbread, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese heaven, and Carolina style pulled pork.

After this filling feast, we luckily had plenty of time to walk. We viewed this historical church.

And checked out some of the last alley dwellings in DC. These adorable little homes are literally in an alley. They don’t face a street at all.

As darkness set in, we made our way to the final stop of the night, Las Placitas Restaurant, a family-run Salvadoran restaurant that was packed!

Just when we thought we couldn’t eat any more, we were served up chips and salsa, margaritas, and large plates of plantains, pupusas and shredded beef

And finally dessert, sopapillas with honey, strawberry sauce, and whipped cream. Oooof. I think we all rolled out of there!

During each stop of the tour, we sat with different bloggers, allowing for a little time to chat and get to know new people. It was fun but also tiring! Our guides were really fantastic; they knew everything off the tops of their heads and didn’t stumble or fumble once. You could tell they were seasoned pros, and they had lots of recommendations for eating in DC.
