It’s no secret that food bloggers are generally in love with Whole Foods Market. It was perhaps one of the first places that I shopped where I started to think food was art; I can still just wander around looking at their unique displays and hard-to-find goodies. I love it so much, Whole Foods even gets a shout-out in my About page. So it was a perfect match last night when Whole Foods River Street in Cambridge hosted its first blogger event.

Whole Foods River Street

Held in the café, just off of the drool worthy hot bar and salad bar areas, the event was in a cozy, enclosed place that perfectly fit the obviously excited group of bloggers in attendance. I arrived at the event with Megan, who was kind enough to pick a bunch of us up at Central Square, and Daisy, Elizabeth, and Kathy. Once we were checked in, we got to check out the awesome display of food that Whole Foods put out for us.

The cheese display was first and was the love of my evening. Sean from Whole Foods’ cheese department told us all about the selection and gave us some great ideas for making holiday treats such as rolling goat cheese logs in nuts or herbs for an easy, delicious cheese spread.

We sampled several goat cheese spreads including one with a mix of olives and one with Peppadew peppers which Megan and I quickly became addicted to. Peppadew peppers are neither sweet nor hot; they are somewhere in the middle, and they are so flavorful and go perfectly with goat cheese. In fact, I have eaten these little red gems stuffed with sweet goat cheese in the Naschmarkt in Vienna. I can’t wait to make this dip for Christmas.

The cheese table also included a variety of other cheeses, tortilla crackers, and marcona almonds.

Sean knew a ton about cheese, and we bloggers were clearly engaged, judging by the fact that the cheese table had a small crowd all evening!

Whole Foods also shared a variety of hot appetizers like creamy Swedish meatballs, arancini, chicken satay, and stuffed mushrooms. As expected, everything was fresh, made with the best ingredients, and kept us going back for more.

And while I flocked to the cheese and other appetizers, those with a sweet tooth were not left out. Tarts, mini cheesecakes, and cupcakes decorated with festive sprinkles and snowflakes.

Throughout the evening, we also tasted some of the beer and wine that Whole Foods carries. The Cisco Brewers’ Santa’s Beered had a festive spice to it and is definitely a beer that would fit right in at our house. I also tasted a just-okay Cabernet Sauvignon from Three Wishes, and a special Camino de Navaherreros Garnacha that had a nice acidity and drinkability factor. Smile

The room was decorated with all sorts of seasonal touches like cranberries, pinecones, and greenery; the team at Whole Foods really went all out to make it a great evening.

And, as dutiful food bloggers, in a hilarious exodus, I think every one of us did some shopping after we left. I picked up my beloved hot Grillo’s Pickles and Real Pickles fermented cabbage. If I had realized my husband was picking me up rather than having me take the train home, I would have left with a lot more!

It was so nice of Whole Foods to host us, and I was really happy to meet some new bloggers, catch up with old friends, and to eat a lot of yummy cheese! It really put me in the holiday spirit.

Where do you do your grocery shopping? Do you have a Whole Foods Market near you?

Imagine my excitement when I was contacted by Casey from Kitchen Play to participate in a Sidecar Series. I love creating new recipes, trying new products, and writing about it all, so I was definitely up for the challenge.

The theme?

“New Traditions”, a focus on incorporating products from Woolwich Dairy into a holiday meal by adding something new to a traditional recipe or creating an entirely new recipe and tradition.

Woolwich Dairy cheese can be found at Whole Foods; for information on other locations, you can visit their website.

I decided to put a delicious and seasonal twist on two pretty standard holiday items, biscuits and mashed potatoes. I chose Woolwich Dairy Goat Cheddar for both recipes.

Woolwich Dairy

Before I finalized my recipes, I tasted a few pieces of the cheese and had to cut myself off to make sure I had enough to cook with. This goat cheddar is so unique! It is mild but has that distinct tangy goat’s milk flavor. If you like goat cheese, you will love this.

Recipe 1: Tart and Savory Cheddar Cranberry Biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
3/4 cup milk
1 cup fresh cranberries
1 cup grated Woolwich Dairy Goat Cheddar

For the biscuit base, I used a standard biscuit recipe to start.

When it came to cutting in the chunks of butter, I grated in the cheddar and worked that in, along with the butter. Right before baking, I kneaded the cranberries in, doing my best to make sure they were not falling out on the sides so that they would not scorch.

After about 12 minutes, I pulled out perfectly buttery, cheesy, biscuits with bright little bursts of sweet-tart cranberry flavor. They didn’t need butter or any additions; the cheese made them moister and more crumbly than regular biscuits.

Recipe 2: Holiday Cheddar Mash

6 small white potatoes
3 large parsnips
1 medium turnip
4 cloves garlic, peeled
handful Italian parsley, chopped
1/2 cup light cream
2 cups grated Woolwich Dairy Goat Cheddar

turnip, parsnip, potatoes

Cut vegetables into equal-size chunks, cover with water, and bring to a boil. When the vegetables are semi-soft, add a handful of chopped parsley and the peeled cloves of garlic.

turnips, parsnips, potatoes

Once all of the vegetables are soft enough to easily cut with a butter knife, drain the water, add cream and return to stovetop. Use a potato masher to mash the vegetables until smooth, then add in the cheese a cup at a time, slowly stirring it in. If desired, stream in a bit more cream to achieve a smoother consistency.

Serve with additional grated cheese and parsley.

I love this twist on classic mashed potatoes. Not only does it add a little bit of extra nutrition, but the natural spice of the turnips and parsnips really adds a kick. And the Woolwich Dairy goat cheddar makes it the best kind of comfort food, perfect for a winter meal.

I had so much fun working with Kitchen Play and Woolwich Dairy, and I am looking forward to serving both of these dishes at a holiday meal in the very near future!

Bloody Mary not required, but highly recommended. Winking smile Last night I was feeling very under the weather and wanted some comfort food which, for me, often ends up being breakfast food. I had eggs in mind as I have really been enjoying a diet higher in protein lately. A little extra meat, beans, dairy, or eggs has been helping me to feel full, and with marathon training around the corner, I need that.

I browsed the interwebs for “easy quiche” recipes and was surprised to find a bunch that involved mixing biscuit mix right in with eggs and other ingredients. I was a bit skeptical, but since I was so tired and hoping for an easy dinner, I gave it a go. As always, I used a variety of recipes as a base, then made my own mixture up.

Multi Grain Pancake Mix eggs

In my mix:

4 eggs

1 cup multi-grain baking mix

1 cup milk

1/2 cup grated Cabot jalapeno cheddar

2 cups chopped spinach

3 pats butter

garlic powder and black pepper to taste

eggs and spinach

I mixed the eggs and spinach together with garlic powder and pepper, then separately mixed the baking mix, butter, milk, and cheese. Before I poured them into a lightly greased pie plate, I thoroughly blended the two bowls.

Yes, that’s butter floating around in there, but don’t worry, it ends up being a teeny bit over the whole dish.

quiche

I cooked this at 350 for 40 minutes, then used the broil setting on high for a few minutes, until the smoke alarm went off. That tells you it’s done Smile

quiche

As you can see, the quiche was nicely browned on top and had that yummy brown butter flavor. And much to my surprise, the baking mix sunk to the bottom and made for a light and buttery crust. Talk about a lazy girl’s brunch dish! I served this with multi-grain toast, and we really did have Bloody Marys.

I mix in tomato juice, lime juice, Ketel One vodka, juice from my Mezzetta pepperoncini jar, horseradish, black pepper, and hot sauce. Delish!

Bloody Mary

I love the ease of this meal, how delicious and filling it is, and that it gave us leftovers for lunch. I simply can’t get ride of my lingering cold and am feeling super lazy!

Today begins the final countdown. . . one week of work left! Wahooo!

I am also very excited about Blogtoberfest and trying Ginger Park tonight.

What is your favorite meal? Breakfast/brunch, lunch, or dinner?

And just for fun, a photo of my cat Scout scoping out the hood as she does every morning. There is some work being done on our street, ensuring hours of kitty TV Smile
